So I'm planning to start building my first chip set. I want to start with a set that:
  • I can afford
  • I can easily add to or replace broken/missing chips in future if required
  • I like the look and feel of
For the above reasons I am looking at Majestics (maybe with a few Royal high denoms) or possibly Dunes CC. I am planning to have the same make for both Cash Game and Tournament, but I'm thinking to customize them a little, so that there is no overlap between the cash and tourney chips:
  • Cash Set .05, .25, 1, 5, 20 (standard Majestic colors for .25. 1. 5, relabel Brown, Blue for .05, 20)
  • Tournament Set 25, 100, 500, 1k, 5k, 25k, 100k, 500k (standard Majestic colors for 25, 100, 500, 1k, relabel Orange or Royal for 5k, Royal or Plaques for 25k, 100k, 500k)
I eventually want to have enough chips so I am able to support the following games:
  • Cash Games up to 2 tables of 8 players
    • NLHE .05/.10, .10/.25, .25/.25, .25/.50. .50/1, 1/2 (Max Buy-in = 100 BB)
    • Limit HE BB = .05/.10, .10/.25, .25/.50. .50/1, 1/2 (Small Bet/Big Bet = .10/25, .25/50, .50/1, 1/2, 2/5)
    • Dealers Choice - Antes = .05, .25, .50, 1 (3 raises per round, max bet ante on early rounds, double ante on last 2 rounds)
    • Sufficient chips to allow for rebuys (I'm guessing that 1/2 the players will rebuy up to 2 times, so average 1 rebuy per player)
  • Tournaments up to 3 tables of 10 players
    • Starting Blinds of 25/50
    • Normal (10k) or deeper stack (50k or 100k?) starting stacks
    • Sufficient chips to allow for rebuys (2 max per player) and color changes
I have seen threads on the forum that discuss suggested cash game distributions for specific games and selected blind ranges (NLHE .25/.25 through 1/2 for example), but I haven't seen any distribution that would cover Limit, NL and Dealers Choice Cash Games ranging from nickel ante through $1 ante Dealers Choice, .05/.10 through $1/$2 Limit, and .05/.10 NLHE through 1/2 NLHE, as well as Tournament normal and deep stack variants.

So my hope is that the very knowledgeable members of PCF (and some of the less knowledgeable ones as well) can provide me with a suggested chip distribution of .05/.25/1/5/20 cash and 25/100/500/1000/5k/25k/100k/500k tournament chips for the number of players and types of games listed above.

Also I'm a complete noob at this, so if you see any obvious flaws in my reasoning above, please point them out (with the exception of stating the obvious that I ought to buy Paulsons, even if it means that I will be eating cat food in my later years because all of my retirement savings are tied up in really nice chips!)

Many thanks!!!!

The tourney set is easy. (You may gets slightly different advice on this, but I'm close. Remember that China Clays come in packs of 25.)

For max efficiency, do 8/8/4/7/x stacks. You'll need:
T25 240
T100 240
T500 120
T1000 240
T5000 100 (maybe more if you really plan on doing T25K)
T25K 20 (only really needed if doing deep stacks)

If you like more chips on the table, do 12/12/5/6/x stacks:
T25 360
T100 360
T500 160
T1000 220
T5000 100
T25K 20

Cash is a different story. You plan to spread everything from $10 to $200 buy-in games, both NL and Limit? That will require a metric crud-ton of chips.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I figured the tourney distributions would be pretty standard, and are fairly well covered in several threads. Thanks for your breakdown, it matches pretty well what I have seen after reading pages and pages of comments.

The cash portion is the tricky part. I won't be spreading all of these games at the same time, but want to be able to host beginners and cheap neighbors at the nickel antes and blinds, and hopefully find some more serious players for the middle and higher limit stuff. I'll probably only be able to fill one table initially, so the chip count could be smaller to start, but I want an idea of what the set will look like in its ultimate phase.
