I’ve got an empty 600 chip carrier that cost me £30. Now I could throw it out or sell it for £10 or I could spend £600 filling it with chips for a limit set. We all know that I’ll be taking that last option :D

Anyway I’m thinking 540 x $1s and 60 x $20s / $25s. Does that seem right or am I better going with 100 of the bigger chips?

Not played limit before so any advice would be appreciated.

If you really want to limit it to 600 chips, I'd personally consider 500/80/20 of $1/$20(25)/$100
Do you really think that it’s better to have 1200 chips for limit? Like I said in the OP I’ve not played limit so if it’s that much better I’ll consider getting 1,200

I don't play a lot of limit poker, but depending on the stakes you want to play, you might be want to consider 1200 chips in order to have a more flexible limit set. If you're playing £2/4 limit with 6 or 7 players, you can probably more easily get away with the 600 chip set. However, if you might want to play £3/6 (or especially £4/8), you're probably going to want more chips.

This is PCF, so most will recommend somewhere between 3 & 7 racks of chips per player, and two racks of value chips for color ups. :D

That's disrespectful to the existing chip carrier :D

That’s what I’m worried about  :ROFLMAO:

I’m thinking 50 chips might not be enough now. Maybe 100 is the right amount...

Realistically for a pleasant limit game you should have a minimum of 1 rack of workhorse chips per player (2 racks is always better, 3 is even more fun) for limit games. The best type of game is a 2/4 chip game meaning your workhorse chip should be 1/2 of the small bet amount.
ie:
$1/$2 limit - workhorse = .50c
$2/$4 limit - workhorse = $1
$4/$8 limit - workhorse = $2
$5/$10 limit - workhorse = $2.50
etc...

You can do a 3/6 chip game for games like $3/$6 or $6/$12 limit where your workhorse chip is 1/3 the small bet but you'll need more workhorse chips.

And generally it's best not to use a 1/2 chip game but it does happen.

The value chip should be at least 20x your workhorse chip so 5 value chips = 1 rack of workhorse chips. 50 value chips will hold 10 racks of workhorse value, 100 value chips will hold 20 racks of workhorse value. Unless you game plays super big you should never need more than a rack of value chips ever or you're playing the wrong stakes. Value chips are just that, for storing value, they will hardly (shouldn't) ever be used for betting.

So for 8-10 players I'd want 800-1000 workhorse minimum (preferably 1600-2000) and 60-80 value chips should cover most anything
When in doubt cut back on the value chips and buy as many workhorse chips as possible.

And yes people will tell you that you can play limit with less chips on the table but WhereTF is the fun in that. o_O

:cool

A 1/2 chip game works fine, but you either need a handful of small blind chips, or just go with double big blinds, a single big blind on the button.

Ah well. Looking like the 600 chip carrier is destined for the bin

Thanks for that. Gives me an idea of what I need.

And the next question... where the hell do you get 1000 chips of the same denomination?

I think 600 is a little small for a limit set. Another idea - You could make a micro stake set of 200x nickels, 200 quarters, 180 $1s and 20 $5s or something like that?

Nobody has ever played limit poker here and I am embarrassed to admit I have no idea on how limit poker is played and have failed to understand the betting rules, despite having googled that thing repeatedly.
Could be the language barrier or some mental deterioration under way, due to age.:D
Looks fun (and expensive) chip-wise, though.:)

Believe me limit gets played especially in casinos with a lot less chips, and IMO is less enjoyable. Most of the time in a casino $4/$8 game my usual buy in is a rack & a stack (100x $1 & 20 x $5). So you can play limit with a normal NL/PL type chipset with just a few extra $1 (or whatever workhorse chip).

It's just not near as fun. :)

Last time in Vegas I played 2/4 at the Flamingo, and buy in was typically 40-60 x 10 people + rebuys. All the chips were $1s except high hand awards etc being paid out in $5s or $25s by the floor. Easily 1000+ $1s on the table.
