I would like to get my first full Custom Chips. Not handled 43mm Chips yet, but I will purchase a sample. Also ceramics are more effordable for me. I live in Germany and a Custom ASM Set would be out of my budget.

So, the basic idea of the design is to gather some of the vacations in the last years I enjoyed most.

To get a quick mockup i used PAINT. But for the real mockup I think I will use GIMP. Anyone with experiences in GIMP? I have zero experiences with graphic programms. But this should be the opportunity to learn some basic skills.

Design:
- I will not use the pictures next to Chips, but would like to use them as a template.
- The chip color and edgespot colors should be somehow find again in the graphic. ,
- I will not use a $ or € sign. The Kyoto Chip will be without a denomination. Any Idea what to write instead? :)
- I like the design of edges of the Tiki Kings. I also would like to write the denomination on the edges. But I dont know yet.

Breakdown:
We normaly play microstakes, so that the "5" and "20" can be used as 5c and 20c. While it must feel strange to most Americans to use a 20c Chip for us in Europe its the norm. As it should be a poker-set for a life-time, the breakdown should give me a lot of flexibility. Also to move up in higher Stakes. I know more chips is better, but ... budget.

So the breakdown would be as follows.
- 150x 1
- 150x 5
- 150x 20
- 50x non denomonation
(Breakdown for a single table cash game)

Any feedback is welcome. Thank you!

I use GIMP for the very simplest of photo manipulation - have not yet used it for full chip design. For that I have used Adobe Illustrator in the past. Many forum members have also said Inkscape (free) is relatively easy to use.

As far as the pictures themselves, I would consider some manipulation to make them flatter, to make them look more like a drawing than a photo. Play around with the photo transformation tools. Try not to put too much detail in there - focus on one or two elements of the photo to capture the overall location theme that you want.

Be prepared to increase the font size on your text. I would also definitely put the denomination on the rolling edge - it's one of the unique characteristics of custom ceramics, and you should use it to full advantage.

Thank you. This was the advice I was lookong for
I will take a look at Inkscape.

Right. I think this will be the hardest part in the designing process.

Exactly. There are some realy nice printed edges out there. But these are always Chipcos.

Okay! Inkscape works fine.

Two video tutorials I found very helpful:

This is my first mockup of the basic chip.

I tried the Vector Image Trace with the surfer. Result is not very satisfying

Good tutorial, it does not seem very difficult to carry out, I will try

Have you thought about alternating the edge text orientation to make it that either way is right side up?

I didnt thought about that. Thank you. Good advice. I will give it try. Maybe alternating the triangles too.

I'm going to ask a quick question: Are you doing full ceramics or ceramic hybrids?

Most times a full ceramic doesn't really require edgespots and looks sharp and snazzy, like this:

what it sounds like to me is you're doing a Polyinno style chip, like this:

Now these are nice chips, I gotta be honest with you. After getting a sample set, I gotta admit I love them =)

Thanks Steve. I am looking for full ceramics yet. I think I handled only once the Ascona Hybrids. Nice that you found something you like. Is it a sample set by SunFly? Do you know much it is per chip for 500 Chips? 43mm Custom ceramics in Germany are around 80 to 90cent per Chip. At least these are the prices I know.

I can see your point regarding design.

Yep, I got a Sunfly sample set of Woody's Cardroom, and my most recent custom design, Midnight Casino will be on Sunfly's.

Prices, okay, I actually know this.

The Ascona are 39mm Polyinno's sold by Sunfly, IIRC. I like the Polyinno's, from what I heard the label doesn't discolor at all which is a slight risk with the Polyclay (Ravenor, Lucid Diamond).

If you go full ceramic, like through brpropoker.com -- 500 chips will cost you about 94c a piece plus shipping. One reason it costs so much is that the machine is specifically made for 39mm chips, if you go through and make 43mm even in a stock set like Wicked Spades or Dia De Los Muertos, they are in fact full custom.

Sunfly's prices are dependent on whether you want them aligned or are okay with unaligned. The aligned chips will cost you 13c additional each, I saw that 500 I believe is $1.01 each for aligned, not too terrible considering that comes with the inlays in. Unaligned are 88c each, but then you also have shipping costs which are about 20% of the total price of the item and I know the US has a 15% tariff on those, so you may want to contact Sunfly if you're going to go that route.

A PNY influenced deisgn.

I wouldnt aligne the trapezoid of the chip face with the ones on the edges.

What do you think?

Update

Base chip without the "label".

Your feedback is welcome.

As a next step I would start fine tuning the trapezoid "edgespots" and the printing.

Is it correct that in case of alignment I need two designs. One for the front and one for the backside of the chip? Right?
You can just use the same design for both sides. Usually you don’t have to give a second side to the chip manufacturer, they’ll just assume that they’re the same on either side an align it. Then again, you could have a different design on one side if that tickles your pickle.

Not necessarily. They can be the same, as long as there's a reasonable way to align both sides to each other, the rolling edge, or both.

Thank you so much.

As I have zero experience with the design process I hope you stay patient. Because I didnt get it yet.

For instance, if I take the yellow 5 chip. I think I have to do a backdesign. And just mirror the frontdesign will flip the lettering.

Frontdesign = Backdesign - side by side alligned:

Backdesign mirrored => Lettering is wrong.

Backdesign with mirrored edgespots only.

This way an alignement will work.

What do you think about the triangle design? Here is the an other closeup. Hate or love it? What is your honest opinion :)

As the traingles doesnt sit tight to the edge I didnt felt like I need to do alignement.

You mean the trapezoids? ;) I must admit it's unique. If you like the design then I say keep working with it.

You're right in that you don't *need* to do alignment since they the markings don't go all the way to the edge of the chip face (or span the entire rolling edge). I think that you will find, however, that it would still look a bit strange from most angles if these were not aligned. Maybe a 3D rendering would help show this.
