39mm vs 43mm (1 Viewer)

Hi I am really sorry if this is a super dumb question, I’ve been trying to search the forum but nothing is coming up that explains what I am looking for. I am sure someone else has already asked this but is the main difference between a 39mm chip and a 43mm chip just it’s size? Is there any particular reason to go with one over the other if the make is the same, is it just aesthetics and preference ?

Standard chips are 39mm (and to a lesser degree, 40mm). Casinos will sometimes use 43mm for special or high denom chips. I have casino 43mm in a $8 LE, $1000 and $5000. There are alot more out there (and larger than 43mm too). Chippers get 43mm chips made as $20/$25 or $100 to get that same high roller feel. Some will make an entire chip set out of 43mm.

39mm has long been the standard.
43mm chips have predominantly been used for higher denomination cash chips, to make them easily distinguishable, for security purposes.
But now, and especially for home use, anything goes.

Oh gotcha that makes sense. In terms of storage, I assume I would I just need to get racks that can hold 43mm

Most casinos use 43 mm for the high denomination chips. all of my sets move to 43 mm for $500s and up. I also have a couple sets that are all 43 mm except for the &1s and $5s. It’s all preference thou some chippers like to use 39 mm across the board.

Yes, you can't store 43mm in standard 39mm racks. But you can store 39mm in 43mm racks.

And Matsui racks store both.

And don't forget about 36mm tournament chips.

43mm chips are used extensively (exclusively???) on Vegas Baccarat tables. Likely elsewhere as well, but one location/situation where they are used.

Actually Matsui Racks fit both 39mm and 43 mm beautifully.

Don't forget 36mm, some casinos will use slightly smaller than standard 39mm chips as specialty non-cash value (NCV) or promotional/actual cash chips. I have 2 tourney sets in 36mm and I love the idea for a packed table. 43mm chips on the other hand are HUGE! For high value chips they are fun but I would not want an entire set of giant chips.

Yeah I was a little worried that they might be too big, obviously a personal preference, but good to hear someone else’s experience with them.

43 mm chips are used for higher denominations (typically 1K and up) and most baccarat chips regardless of denomination. A fun fact is that Caesars and Mandalay Bay use 43 mm baccarat chips on all high limit tables (including blackjack and roulette) from denominations ranging from 5.00 to 1K. Their 5K and 25K are very oversized and are 48 mm chips. We don't see a lot of 48 mm chips out here.

If you look at the chips in person, the size difference is easy to tell. However, looking at online images might be a bit challenging to distinguish, 39 mm chips have Top Hat & Cane (TH&C) mold, and 43 mm chips have Inverted Hat & Cane (IH&C) mold. See the image of the chips I own, left is 39 mm and the right is 43 mm.

Personally speaking, 43 mm chips are for high denominations and baccarat chips.
