It lasted a few months, then I found PCF.

What was your first set and how long did you keep it?

Plastic top hats from the 80s. Still have them, never use them.

In the early 00s ingot these MGKs as an homage to them, but I never used them and sold them:

Monte Carlo metal slug ABS. Still have them. Barely use them. They're pretty. But feel cheap.
I feel ya dog. First 'nice' set was some Claysmith Mints. Then came PCF, a barrel of pink starbursts and madness.

(I still kinda miss them - they were purdy.)
this might need to be a safe space for some folks...

:-p

I still have my dice chips bought a decade ago but my first “real” set (to me at least) were Monaco Casino and Outlaw sluggos from DPS ~1 1/3 years ago (around when I joined PCF). Still have (and like) those too! Will probably pay them forward to a starting chipper or family/friends eventually.

First set was hot stamped dice chips then several years later onto WTHCs. All before I stumbled into the wallet draining waters of this place. ;) :ROFLMAO:
Still have the WTHCs and a good friend here on PCF has my original dice chips.

1st set? Bought a set of PO DO's at my next door neighbors garage sale way back when I was about 10yrs old & had them thru High School. Found these pictures on ETSY & man do they bring back memories...

I can still remember the sound of them!!

My first set was kind of hotstamped dice chipsni bought when i was 14. I was super proud of these because i have never seen another set like this with € denomination.
Today i know better but i am kind of sad i sold them some years ago

As a young lad in my late teens I saved up enough scratch to buy 300 clay chips from Gamblers General Store in Vegas.

I don't remember them having a mold but they may have. They came in Warnke boxes and were certainly clay because we busted a few. No hotstamp and inlays weren't an option. Can't remember the spot pattern but being young and dumb I bought white with black for the small chip and black with white for the big bet

I think they get left behind in a move at some point, sadly.

I still have my 2nd set, composite suits (not slugged) also from Gamblers General Store.

Played craps last night with friends and my 'facebook memories' brought up the set I originally bought for craps as '3 years ago' today which was nice.

My friend who always does our dealing looked at the chips last night, cards mold starlite tributes and goes 'are these different chips' and I let him know, 'we've gone through 4 different sets for craps in the last 3 years, this is the first time you've noticed'.

I/we started playing a lot of poker in high school (early 80's) - nickel/dime/quarter stakes, all circus draw/stud/guts style games, no NL/PL games like we play today. I had a doubled up grocery bag, half full of red/white/blue plastic poker chips (no racks! hah). They were from 3 different sets that also didn't interlock between sets. And then we also had maybe a rack of these weird green chips that didn't match any of the other sets and were flexible/bendy - those were our $1 chips... lol I think all the chips were just lying around the house and most likely were my dad's, not sure where he got them. Later on, I got a set of dice chips (that were SOO much better than what we had been playing with!) and still have that set today. My buddies also got dice sets not too long after me and those sufficed for many years - I'm pretty sure they still have them too. I'm the only one from my group dumb enough to join up here and start spending additional $$$, lol - and I'm the most blue collar of our bunch... :D

These aren't my pics but are eerily similar:

Before I found PCF, I was trying to find the same chips that my uncle bought 20ish years ago. I know now that he has a Chipco “Fan of Cards” set, but I didn’t know what that was. I tried searching all kinds of things, and the closest I could find were these “Yin Yang” slugged chips from a discount website. They’re decent. I’ve played a few cash games with them and taught my girlfriend how to play poker using them. Now that I’m here, I’ve gone fully down the rabbit hole. I put in for my first group buy, and I’m close to pulling the trigger on a custom set from brpro.

My First real set is Milano China Clay, fun fact I actually never owned any dice chip set before

The Milano lasted for 2 years+ before I found PCF and I had since sold the set, I still missed that set once in awhile

I did take my set to sell at a swap meet with a group of friends since I figured I probably wouldn't use them again. I ended up leaving them in the car, decided the nostalgia of all the games played with them was worth more than $20-$25.

would you still recommend these to someone looking for their first real set? i've been eyeballing the manaco, outlaw, spartan offerings on discount poker shop the past couple weeks and they seem like they would do the trick for me.

Yes I would, especially if you’re on a tight budget. At 18¢ per chip they are still a good value. The colors are consistent, there’s no “flashing” (plastic edging from the molding process) to pick off, clean looking product.

If you think you might explore more costly options, then get a small set of these that would satisfy your game for the time being but save money toward a more expensive product. If you think you’ll be fine with these then buy whatever you need. There are other posts with great info for chip set breakdowns.

If you’re not in a big hurry sign up for their email list, they’ll send emails out with coupon codes (mostly 5% but occasionally 10%).

Nice! thanks for the tip! I have a cheap wally world set that I got with a barrington table on the local marketplace. I plan to replace those with a small 300-500 set for my home use.
