Here is an auction for 233 mixed casino singles. They don't look especially valuable, I thought the price wouldn't break $100 and I would have jumped in much less than that. Yet here we are over $150 and maybe a big fight at the gavel. The question for me is why? Those chips are mostly unimpressive - maybe I am missing something.

Just curious -=- DrStrange

I think a lost of collectors would by these and put them back on eBay at $1-$2 per chip and just sell singles.

My guess is:
A) for the single $1 Thunder Bay Charity Casino chip because what's the Canadian dollar valued at no..........wait. Nevermind.....

B) people new to chip collecting just want an instant boost to their collection, maybe?

I'm def leaning to "B"

I am a newbie or neophyte to chip collecting. I wouldn't spend that much for 233 chips that I know nothing about. I would be interested on how the seller packs them for shipping. Save that amount for a nice rack. I should clarify that last sentence. Rack of chips!!!
Having been to DrStranges game and looked at his racks, I aspire to be like him!!!

I did jump start my singles collection this way. Like I said, I'd have made a run at this auction for $0.30/chip and almost doubled my collection. But these are mostly ceramic chips from lesser known venues. I wouldn't pay anything close to that much but obviously I don't know jack because there is a line of people ready to pay a lot more than I thought was fair value.

These are likely all live casino chips. They mostly appear to be $1 denominations. So just as a default, they truly are worth $233. From a collectible perspective it will only go up from there.

I first got into single chip collecting when my parents used to go to Vegas in the early '80s. I have quite a few chips from the 80s and 90s. What I have noticed over time is that generally, $1 chips are worth 4-5x their face value. $5 chips might fetch 2x their face value. Higher denoms will fetch slightly above face value. This holds true as long as the casino is still around and/or lots of "cancelled" chips did not come onto the market (Dunes, Mapes, any chiproom sale). These chips fetch much less than face value.

I think the chiproom price has skewed our perspective on the value of the chips.

I would expect that auction to sell for upwards $250.

Lots of eBay dealers will list them for $1 each to start (some higher) and charge $3.00 shipping. This way they can make a few $'s. It just takes awhile selling them this way.
