Hello All,

Finally decided to move from lurking to joining PCF.

In the process of getting samples and testing out what I like before getting my next set. Just need to decide if I want to spend the extra cash to make the leap to Paulson or CPC instead of going with China Clays or ceramics...

I usually only play cash games .25/.50 or .50/$1 but want to get a set that would support higher stake games as well. Would be interested in other member's takes on what their ideal denomination breakdown would look like. I'm thinking:

This is the breakdown I was thinking of.

125 $0.25
200 $1
225 $5
150 $25
50 $50

Anyway, this forum has already been a great resource to help guide me as I put together my next set and has given me a lot to think about. Thank you to all the members who post and contribute.

I'm looking forward to being part of the conversation moving forward.

Thanks,

Scott

Welcome Scott!! Breakdown looks great sir. Although $50 is not a standard denom and only double the value of your $25 chip whereas a $100 chips is x4 the value and follows a better denomination increase (.25 x 4 = $1, $1 x 5 = $5, $5 x 5 = $25) I think you get the point, but a $50 chip isn't common and actually limits your bank on the high end for future game expansion.

Just FYI because usually tourneys are ran with T25 starting chips, many here prefer a $20 chip in the cash game as if follows actual cash denoms. Just a couple things to think about!! Best of luck on your chipping journey. If I Can ever be of assistance with anything to help you learn the ropes, feel free to shoot me a PM anytime!!

Hello and welcome!

A reasonable 600-chip cash set that can play a small variety of stakes might consist of:

100x $0.25
200x $1
200x $5
80x $25
20x $100

Bank $5225, good for 0.25/0/50 through to 1/2 (or even small 2/5) games
Welcome! The breakdown quoted in the above is a great starting point.

I agree with the above, I personally like towers of small denom chips so in my mind you could double the number of .25 chips and that would make sense.

for low stakes cash games the jump in price from stock ceramics and China Clays to real casino Paulsons is not that much money. The resale value will be better down the line and using real casino Paulson chips is about as good as it gets in a home game.

the only chip that will be costly is the frac. And those can be labeled easily for a less expensive option.

look for any of the Horseshoe chips that have made available as a great value option.

this is the breakdown you want for .25/.50m- 1/2 unless you can do more chips then add another 100x $1 and 100 x $5

what is your budget and we can help advise on chips to purchase

I concur with the previous comments. Definitely change the $50 to a $100 and consider doing a $20 instead of a $25 for a cash set.

But keep the quarters at x120 #quarterwars :)

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions. I agree that the $100 works much better.

Im not sure id be able to get my head wrapped around $20 instead of $25 chips. I get the rationale but my mind always counts greens as $25. Maybe I just need to take the leap, as I never thought I'd like the 4 color poker deck but that is all I play with online now and would never go back.

I've thought about getting a smaller set but if I do I think it would be China clays for lower stakes cash games only and I would up the amount of lower denominations. I would then get CPC customs or Paulsons as a second set for higher cash games. However it would be a shame to have nicer chips and not have them in play during lower stakes games.

Totally agree - greens always feel like $25 to me too. But the fun part is that you can choose something completely different for a $20 (although I usually opt for yellow).

I could get you a way better quality set than China Clays for a lower stakes set, and at a price point not too far off. Feel free to PM me if interested.

What's the deal with many sellers in the classifieds specifying CONUS shipping only and buyer pays for the shipping? If the buyer is paying what difference does it make to the seller where the package is shipped? It seems like sellers are limiting their market. I've seen this a fair bit and I'm sure there is a reason for it but it escapes me.

Lots of people think it’s a PITA to ship internationally or don’t want to deal with the prospect of customs forms and/or lost packages

Sellers do not want to deal with the customs forms and the concern around international shipping. I get it. The ads that irk me are those that offer free shipping in CONUS, but international pays for full shipping costs (not the difference between the US and International costs). Essentially, CONUS buyers get an additional discount, but that makes sense if the seller really want to sell CONUS only without explicitly stating so.

I'm not a big fan of CONUS only ads but for those that include shipping in the price for CONUS I've never had an issue with them backing that amount out and applying it as credit towards international shipping. I hope this isnt a new trend.

There are also a lot of people on the site who are willing to reship.

I agree with Grant. It'd be nice if all "CONUS ONLY" sellers did the application of shipping discount off the international total, but they don't.

Having a trusted reshipper to receive your goods, even send and receive funds (removes another international fee), and consolidate orders for you, is the best way to go. IMHO.

Sellers are entitled to sell however they want but for some big sales it looks like some would prioritize selling CONUS vs. splitting. I would think sending one package international would be easier... but each to their own. As a Canadian I just don't like the idea of being disadvantaged as a buyer.

I can sympathize. I had a tough start to the hobby. Taxes, fees, and shipping kills it.

I can understand what @RichMahogany is saying. We all have our comfort zones, and if I had the choice, I'd ship only domestic too. But we are the minority here, let's face it. The forms and declaration part can be uncomfortable for some. It's just easier to deal domestic.

However, if you need any help, reach me by PM. I can try to offer help to overcome these small but daunting barriers.

I never said it was my point of view :)

Thanks for the offer! No issues with this yet but just more of an observation.

Agree w the comment about increasing number of 25c to 200, especially if you have $100 backing up the top end. At least in our group, it cuts down on need to make change from the pot and people seem to not mind bigger stacks. Then rebuys go with larger denoms, so no issue there.

If you're considering China clays over Paulsons, I'd recommend looking into some of the hybrid ceramics like the cards mold sets around here and whatever Sunfly is offering. They're far superior IMO. China clays often break down and start flaking or crumbling after a few years. Pretty much making them worthless. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough.

I actually pulled the trigger on a set of Bud Jones S2 which I really like, instead of CC... and I'm very happy I did!

I'm also now working on a mixed THC set and somehow Ive also ended up trying to build a mixed Christy and Jones set. The projects are fun to work on...

Good choice. I love Bud Jones chips.
