Ok heres my dilemma,

My somewhat regular group only plays tourneys. We play maybe 3 in a night, first 2 would be $10 buy in, last one of the evening $25, with $5 bounty and re-buys. Its a lot s of fun, but i would like to introduce some cash games to the group. I know a couple of the guys have expressed interest, so i'm thinking of getting a chip set together to break the ice.

For sure i know initially they would squawk at 1/1, 1/2 NLHE, or even .25/.50. So i'm thinking of trying out some reasonably low stakes so they don't feel like they are putting everything on the line with the buy in.

the question is....

What size/ denomination chip set do i build to get them interested and playing? i'm looking pretty much at 1 table only with 6 to 9 players.

Any input/ criticism is welcome...

@liftapint, I believe you have a decent lower stakes group, any ideas?

LOL for real... i seriously have not clicked on any of your video links because i already know them. too freakin funny.

We sometimes play. 25/.25 with a 20 -30 dollar buy in.

Ok i like that, how many .25 chips are in play. and what sort of chip set size you think for 6 to 9 players?

I'm ok with introducing .10 or some other denom if it get things going. But hell yes! if .25/.25 works, that would be great.

25c/25c with $25 buyin all the way!!! That's my core game.

20x25c
20x$1

So easy to setup too!

I've been playing dealers choice with 0.05/0.1, sometimes if the players feel frisky we play .1/.25.

More important than the blinds or even the buy-in is the range. If your players do feel intimidated by large blinds because of how fast and hard the hand can go, you can offer them a variety of innovative limits, such as a half-stack all in (meaning that you can't bet more than a person's half remaining stack as the final bet of the hand up to a certain point), or simply a numerical limit that states that the max bet you can put in is $10 per round of betting.

Talk to your group, maybe they'll prefer one over the other.

I would build a. 25/.50 chip set with a 200 max buy in. Eventually you might get there.

100 x .25
200 x 1
200 x 5

Would be a good start

If your crew is used to $10 buyins for tournaments, then it sounds like you should start at .05/.10.
Not sure you're gonna be able to find a rack of nickels and a rack of dimes. Guess it's time to go custom!!

Well thats the thing, its all about perception, if the buy-in is $25-$30 and i tell them it could last an hour or 2 they might be good with that.
Dont forget, these guys are used to NLHE tourney, so they feel already that "hmmmm, if i buy in for $30 i could lose that in 1 hand.."
these guys are not "poker"players with the exception of a couple of the guys.so i want to introduce the cash game in an easy way.
And for sure the cash game will be NLHE, as i know most will not be open to any other sort of variation.

Typically with the tourneys the first 2 or 3 are $10 but the last one is $25 with re-buys, so i think that almost all the players come with the understanding that they might lose $100 or less.
If you guys think $20 to $30 buy-in is a good start with .25/.25 then i'll try that.

I'd rather not go down the .10 and .5 path unless I have to.

I went through the exact same thing many years ago. Free tourney, to buy-in tourney, to cash games (5c/10c), then (10c/25c), now at 25c/25c ($25 buy-in), and thinking of 25c/50c NLHE, and 50c/$1 limit games in the near future.

Start with 5c/10c and work up. No one has to lose their whole stack :-). When you discuss it, say that once your tourney buy-in is gone and you bust out, you can leave with nothing. If you play cash, it doesn't have to be the case - worked for me.

Now my crew won't play tourney at all.

Good luck and have fun.

sorry @liftapint, now i think about it, it wasn't you that host a low stakes cash game.

Thanks, i think they would enjoy it too. As it is, when they bust out of the early tourneys they sit around waiting for the pot to be chopped so we can start the next one.!

Ok. Seems the consensus is .25/.25 with a $20 to $30 buy-in.

Railroad pass quarters are officially OFF the market !!

thanks for all the input guys.

If these guys aren't cash players, and you want to teach them to be, you need to keep the stakes low, so they can learn how to bet right. If you're playing .25/.25, a decent bet on the turn is likely to be $5, give or take. And these guys who are used to losing $45 on a bad night might get really nitty with numbers like that. And if they're hesitant to try cash games, I'd think it would be better to ease them into it with low stakes, than to scare them off with a $20 river bet on their first hand.
Just my thoughts.

Well i don't want to scare them off, but i think it will only takes a couple of orbits for people to realize they can lose their stack in one hand, or they can milk their $30 stack for 2 hours...

Right. But do you WANT them milking their $30 stack for two hours (you've seen me do it - it's no fun) or bet like fiends with their nickels and dimes?

LOL .. i did see you do it!! think that was my worst night EVER at @manamongkids..i was THE ATM. donk/ reload/ donk/ reload etc etc..

No its ok though, for at least 2 or 3 milkers theres at least 2 or 3 loose players. it all balances out in the end.

So if a few of the group need to nurse a stack before they are ready, thats all good.

I'm in! What time's the game. :D I'm definitely in this realm of .25/.25 with a $25/$30 buy-in. My crew considers any bet over $3 to be a large bet. It makes for a fun night imho. But you need to have everyone in sort of the same financial situation which is the tough part.

We had a guy who made more money than everyone else and sat down knowing it. He bullied the table for the night and I almost lost some of my regulars over it.

Oh and I love a ton of quarters at a game like this.

so you think 100 quarters is enough? or??

Also i think we need a .25/.25 PCF meet up on the North Shore !! Knollwoods anyone?

Sign my ass up.
I play like a puss with red chips. But I'll toss the white ones around with the best of them.

I don't want to start a quarter war...well maybe I do. :ROFLMAO: I give out 20 quarters per person including rebuys. The common bet is "lunch money" ($1.25) and people like using the quarters. So I have a shat ton of quarters on the table for this kind of game.

I would start with 2 racks of quarters per table...and now I will take cover before people here start throwing things at me.

More chips the better, i dont think anyone will string you up for that!!, but this is a tough crowd,

Hahaha after hearing what most people on here play at in this area, I definitey can't hang with the big boys. But micro stakes? Now your talking my language.

Wow, @MatB first ditching me for his regulars then not calling my game his regular game :(

Your group won't enjoy a low stakes game when you call every bet
