Custom Designed Case (1 Viewer)

Good evening my brothers and sisters,

I just recently posted an ad selling my SDPM tourney set with a custom designed case. I have had many people ask me about it, so I figured I would create a post to bring the questions and what not here, instead of filling up the classified section. I am unable to export the actual case, as mycasebuilder.com does not allow that (probably to prevent people with 3d printers from stealing them...who knows) so I took some screenshots and will take some time explaining them.

First I am going to be talking about the barrel sizing and spacing.



This first picture shows that the sizing of each barrel (and keep in mind this is for your typical Paulson) is 67 x 39 x 30 mm.



This second screenshot is to show that I separated them on average about 10mm from the next barrel right to left.



This last barrel screenshot shows that I separated them vertically by about 6mm. This is plenty of room to work your finger in to pull out each barrel.

The only exception to this as you can see is the bottom six that are separated by more. This was because those are the 5k and 25k chips and I thought it gave them more prominence. Simply a preference thing.

Now I will show the playing card recesses. For these playing card recesses, I am using the KEM poker sized plastic carrying cases. They can be found on eBay for around 3-4 dollars a piece, if not cheaper.



The first one shows the length x width x depth of the inserts for the KEM holders. These measurements are based on the card cases being put in laying sideways.



This image shows a vertical cut out that is used as finger holes to be able to retrieve the KEM cases.

Lastly, I will show the image of the Dealer button cut-out



If you look at the left side of the screenshot, you can see that you can either use rectangles or circles for cut outs. This one is the circle. The size is ACTUALLY 57mm diameter. The reason is says 70mm x 57mm is because of the small circle that allows the buttons to be retrieved. ALSO, the depth is 10mm on here but that is based on the fact that they are two deep (see my post in the classifieds.)

My set has both 39mm and 43mm chips. Have you ever tried to fit a 43mm chip into one of your cutouts? How snug of a fit are the 39mm chips? Do you think 43mm chips would fit into your cutouts?

The cutouts are based on your own preferences. All you would need to do is to substitute the 39mm measurement for 43mm. I wouldn't try fitting the 43mm chips into the 39mm cutouts.

Quick question @Matthew627 - which of the three foam choices did you use?

Hard foam. With the weight of the chips, it is the best choice. The soft foam will deform.

Just to be clear, are you referring to the Polyethylene (PE) or Pro-Cell foam? I presume the soft foam you are referring to is listed as the Ester foam on their site?

I am pretty sure it is PE. I think the Pro-cell foam is a new option.

Anyone find a good case for a 1000 chip set? Something a similar depth to what Matt used in his. Only one I found on the site is the DORO D3114-5. Close to perfect, but interested in feedback and potentially some other options. Design I put together, using @Matthew627's barrel measurements from the OP, is below:

This is what I got for my 1640 chip SDPM Tournament set + 4 buttons in a Flambeau FZ 7. I'll never ship or put these on a plane and the pricepoint for this medium security case is just fine. Case + foam is showing $184.

I'm not interested in placing cards since I won't use the casino cards with this set. I would have centered the buttons but 11 barrels running at the bottom would have made it look odd. Lower right or left works for me. This includes space for 10 extras and 50 bounties. Starting stacks are 40 chips (25K) and probably too much color. Thanks again Matthew! Screw the pluck foam.

...or maybe this one works a bit better. Smaller case and slighter tighter design - 1680 chips + buttons. Plano 108423 - $157 bucks
The Pro cell foam option is another $25 and not necessary or worth it. Look at their video to see for yourself.

Check the gaps between the barrels with someone who has had experience of that foam. If it's rock hard stuff then it's probably OK but too thin then it may damage easily. I would be highly annoyed if I spent that much on custom foam only to have a piece snap off.

I would go with this one as it seems there is more room between the foam.

Advice noted. The real challenge is finding the best case for the money and making everything fit. At least I have new chip related projects to keep me busy now. No new sets on the horizon...

Next up is finding the right case and design for my inlay replaced AS Cali set. It contains 300 39mm chips and 520 43mm chips, two dealer buttons and a couple set ups. This is a start with a Flambeau PZ4 - 92 bucks plus shipping.

Here is an updated design for a 1000 chip set using the Pelican 1605 Air. I wish I could find a shallower case with these same/similary height & width dimensions, and obviously the cost is high, but thought this configuration would be cool.

I have a question about the depth of the barrels in the foam. Is there a specific reason you set the depth to 30mm? That's 3/4's of the chip! Was it difficult to get them out?

Also, is there a standard gap between the perimeter cutouts and the edge of the foam? How much cushion is reasonable?

Is there a reason you left such a wide perimeter around the outside? Was that a requirement of the case you chose or something?

you can also do 25mm. I had no problem getting them out at 30mm. I feel that it also keeps them more secure.

If you get too close to the edges, the foam is too thin and won't protect the chips

No reason other than I wanted a case that would fit 1000 chips, and thats the one I was messing around with at the time - I have since found some others I prefer

I can't wait to see a picture of one of these designs implemented! I am trying to design a case, but not nearly as methodical. Very impressed.

If so thanks man! It's been an interesting project... designing a cabinet for a very specific application creates a unique set of challenges. A case would probably be much easier

I'll post pictures of the first prototype when it's done.

It was directed at everyone! I have been following your other threads regarding cabinets. I do like the idea of a nice acrylic top like @bivey asked about.

If I were designing a cabinet, I would be a as concerned with the amount of space/foam around the perimeter as I wouldn’t be as concerned about an impact from the front/back/sides. You still want coverage of foam surrounding all your chips, but not necessarily as much as you would want in a portable case. Just my $.02
