Hi, all... Thanks for having me here. I play hold ’em (tourneys and cash) 1-3 times per week, but am by no means a pro. I host a home game (two tables, twice a month, unless there are three Mondays in a month) which has been running for about 9 years now. Great group of guys, and a couple of gals.

My main interest here is in collecting Paulson Top Hat & Cane chips with the starburst hot stamps.

After finally tiring of the standard dice chips, I chose Starbursts because in my game we play a tournament early and cash late, and thus wanted a classic chip with no denominations for use in both.

My main chipset is a case of 1,000 Paulson TH&C Starbursts with a monogram on one side, in white, red, green and black. I bought these used, but it appeared that the previous owner never used them. Truly, a beautiful set, especially after a light oiling. These appear to be what sleepypiggly calls “LCVs”, with the tip of the cane facing left.

I also have small quantities (20-40 each) pink, orange, purple and grey Starbursts to use as higher-denomination chips when hosting a tourney, and as bounty chips.

One thing I’ve noticed, in trying to expand this set, is that there are TH&C Starbursts which have very different weights than my monogrammed ones.

The monogrammed ones are thicker and heavier. A stack of 10 chips is about 2-3 mm taller than what I consider the lower grade. At first glance, the chips appear identical, but when handled the difference is obvious. This makes expanding my set difficult.

I would be interested to know if anyone knows the full history of Paulson’s production lines of this type of chip, and will try to post the above with some pictures on an appropriate thread soon.

I'm guessing the heavier ones contain lead. Paulson changed the formula to remove the lead.

I’ve heard that, and it makes sense. However, my monogrammed chips are definitely thicker than some of the others (sometimes referred to as roulette chips?). That additional thickness alone would account for the added weight.

Welcome! I split my time between NYC and Germantown--I'm not too far from you. Hoping to start up a game or join one on weekends.

Your chips are, as previously mentioned, most likely old-school Paulsons, which were made with lead in the mix, so they are heavier and have a great feel. They also may be even older Christy & Jones chips, which used the hat and cane mold prior to Paulson. Either way, they are great chips. You'll likely find it hard to find additional chips that exactly match yours in exact weight and feel.

One thing you might consider is using them solely for your cash set and finding a different set to use for tournaments. Most folks here strongly recommend that you not mix cash and tourney sets. Too much risk of a tourney chip being held back and redeemed as a cash chip, shorting the bank. While your game is a bunch of long time regulars, that is always something that could happen, even inadvertently.

Welcome. Nice chip set.

That's interesting. A barrel (20 chips) of new condition Paulson chips should be right around 66.7 mm tall. Paulson racks have a 66.7 mm measurement and fit new chips snugly. If chips are warped slightly, they may need to be squeezed together to fit in a 66.7 mm rack. But that shouldn't account for a 2-3 mm difference in a stack of 10 chips. As far as I know, 20 new Paulson chips = 66.7 mm tall, regardless of the Paulson mold. (TH&C [LCV and/or SCV], RHC, Paulson Chips, 4 suits, house casino mold, etc...)

After chips are used in casinos over time, the clay surface of the chips will wear away slightly, and get thinner. Really old, used, Paulson chips can sometimes fit 21 chips in a 66.7 mm barrel. So if the "lower grade" chips you're referring to are actually used chips, then the height difference makes sense.

If your TH&C chips are thicker than other new condition Paulson chips, then that would be very interesting. I've never seen that before. You might want to start another thread somewhere (other than Introductions) to share more details and get feedback from others.

Paulson Chips ( leaded or unleaded, regular or Premium), always seemed to be around that magic 10g weight , although there seemed to be a few odd exceptions as high as 11-11.5, & as low as 8.8-9.0g, but these were the exceptions... It even seems as if the relatively newer China Clay & ceramics all were designed with that "10g" Paulson goal..
It's interesting that your heavier chips are also very noticeably thicker than other Paulsons, I would guess that had more to do with the weight than anything else ..

Hi, Wenger... I may have exaggerated slightly, but not much. I just stacked the two types next to each other, to see how high I had to go to reach a one-chip difference.

At 40 chips each, my monogrammed stack was a full chip higher.

The actual difference is probably slightly more, because my monogrammed chips are very even and regular. The lighter chips I tested with were heavily soiled and had some spinners, which probably exaggerated the height of that stack a bit.

I also later tried to weigh two stacks of 25 on my kitchen scale. See attached photos. The monogrammed chips were heavier for sure. Note, however, that this scale is sometimes irregular in its readings—I need to get a better one.

I actually returned the lighter set to the eBay seller. I have found some reds, whites and grays that matched up with my monogrammed ones in terms of size/weight from other sellers, and the hunt continues.

Thanks for the info / thoughts.

No way, Gopher!
Several guys from the Germantown/Livingston/Clermont area play in my game. If you're ever expecting to be upstate on a Monday night, send me a message and I can get you the details... Probably I'm within 20 minutes drive, or less.

The cash portion is suspended for now (summer etc.), but I agree about separate tourney/cash sets. I trust my players, but no sense tempting anyone...

My goal is to either acquire enough Paulsons in other colors so as not to overlap—or else go with some ASM H-mold chips. I almost bought some of those custom from the factory in Maine, but then this set popped up and I won the auction.

The photo shows a few gaps, but this set is freaking perfect. Not a single spinner. A handful of the chips had some color transferred from the case (presumably from sitting for so long—these really appear to have gone unused), but this cleaned up relatively easily. During the WSOP, I mineral oiled all of them, and hand-rubbed them dry. Just beautiful with the oiling. Looking forward to the edges getting lightly dulled with use—they are pretty crisp out of the gate, even a little sharp.

The monogram FWIW is “LK.” We have been joking about who that might have been... Lenny Kravitz? Luke Keuchly? Louis Kahn? Leon Klinghoffer? The Lion King? Some self-styled Lady Killer?

Hi, all... Thanks for having me here. ....

Sounds like a true chipper at heart. Story checks out. Welcome, again!

Chips that are really dirty are a sign they've been in repeated use (casino or private club game?), and would be thinner than mint chips, if that alone explains the height difference.

For sure. I would think maybe a private game, since they have no denominations... But these were really filthy, with the edges thoroughly rounded. I would think even a busy private club would have trouble getting them that worn in. But who knows.

Yeah that's the difference......in height and weight

Mint chips vs used chips

It's seems odd but they feel like different chips when they are worn........sometimes mint chips will stack a full chip higher than used chips in a barrel

Understood, but these feel substantially different. The difference in thickness is palpable, even 1-to-1. The sound is different as well, when riffled.
