The WSOP Main Event will be played to a final winner in July, and ESPN will now broadcast an estimated 40 hours of live Main Event action (on a 30-minute delay)...

The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event will now be known on July 22nd, as this deal marks the end of the ‘November Nine era.' The biggest tournament in all of poker starts on July 8th with Day 1a and plays down to a winner on three consecutive days starting on July 20th.

Under the new deal, ESPN will telecast an estimated 40 hours of live – on a 30-minute delay – WSOP Main Event coverage each July, on top of 130 hours of originally packaged shows. Any coverage not aired by ESPN will be streamed exclusively through Poker Central’s digital distribution channels.

Personally, I think this is good news... I always hated the 4 month break in play.
 
Thank god. I hated that format so I'm glad to see that it's switching back.

If I was in it, I think I'd welcome the 4 month period to study up on the competition and get some coaching. But as a viewer, it stunk.
 
Same here. The long delay was stupid. I haven't watched it other than the year I was in Vegas during it. I even stayed at the Rio, but never watched it live. I watched it on TV while playing at the Mirage.

It was annoying though because some guy was analyzing every hand for the table, like we actually cared.
 
Maybe the NFL should take a 4 month break between the conference championships and the Super Bowl, wouldn't that be exciting? :rolleyes:

The break between the WSOP and the final table was absolutely ridiculous.
 
Is that the same 'Poker Central' that was on the Roku with a streaming channel? I lost the content to that about a month ago and figured it was DOA......???
 
At least Mark Newhouse won't have to wait months before another virtual bubble.

Why exactly was the final table split off from the main event? What was the thought process?

I think I've heard arguments over the years that the break was so the WSOP could build hype for the event, and create "drama" by promoting certain players and creating story-lines through the packaged WSOP broadcasts televised from Aug-Oct.

However, that logic only goes so far. When it comes down to it, I think ESPN just wanted to fill a dead spot in their broadcast schedule. No conflicts with summer sports, no conflicts with NFL (mid-week Main Event table schedule), no baseball World Series... it was probably a financial black hole week, and ESPN wanted to improve revenue over those days.

I hate to make it that simple - but I have a feeling it probably was/is.

The "rationale" behind it was the ratings that ESPN had were low due to the fact that when the broadcast aired, anyone who was remotely interested in following the Main Event already knew who won. By delaying the event for a period of time, they could build hype, flesh out stories for each of the final table players, etc. They did get lucky the year Phil Ivey made the final table, but apart from that, it was an exercise in futility for the most part.
 
I'm glad they won't be doing the November 9 anymore. It was always annoying having to wait so long
 
Poker central announced a few months ago (I think) that their "network" programming (basically the poker TV channel with 24 hour programming) or whatever they called it was ending but their "on demand" style programming would go on.

I LOVE poker and I can usually watch anything to do with it but even I couldn't watch their poker channel because it was so horrible. Not that the shows they aired were horrible but the CONSTANT commercials that aired were atrocious and there was only two or three. The same three fucking commercials over. And over. And over. And over. It was brutal. I can still hear that lady going "Alllll in, allll in" in a weird edit in my head. I hoped that as time went on they would sell advertising but it was obvious the only commercials they could sell was their own so therefore it was the whole over and over and over thing with the same commercials.

I wish them well, I still click on their Roku channel and watch poker vids when I'm bored from the ondemand section, but the other part of their business seemed destined to fail. Sucks. Wish we were still in the boom.
 
Unfortunately the on demand programming on the Roku has been removed as well. There is no programming available at all. Bummer.
 
This is great news. The novemember 9 was so bad, and I have been missing live streaming of the wsop. Hopefully they have some cool ideas and plans for how to run it all. I have listened a bit to the Poker Central podcasts, and I like them quite a lot, at least the "heads up with Remko" podcasts, which features a very interesting interview with one of the stars of poker every week. I see now that there is also a new poker central podcast out from 17 may about the wsop and espn, so I look forward to checking that out as they will probably discuss how the new coverage will be.
 
I'm not as excited as you guys about the news...

To me, by far the best thing abut the wsop broadcasting is the streaming of all the other events with Tuck and all his guests... To me, the main event is more like a soap opera done by ESPN and I don't have much interest in following other than the live final table...

Now, maybe Poker Central will keep with all the free streaming, but I've heard news, or should I say, rumors, on the contrary unfortunately...

I would take an absolute crap Nov9 just to have all the awesome events streamed like in the past years, personally...

Having said that, I'm still hopeful there will be some high level coverage of the 50K, all the 10Ks, the MM and the like...
 
I guess to simplify, my point is this:

Yes, ESPN totally butchers the Main Event...

BUT...

Since it doesn't care about all the other events, it lets the poker experts put out outstanding streams...
 
Are they still using Poker Central to air WSOP event or is it all on this PokerGo app I've been hearing about? I've seen slot of events are on PokerGo but can't justify paying the fees. If I'm paying money for poker it's to play the game not watch it

Poker Central and PokerGo are essentially the same thing. One $10/month subscription allows you to watch on any device. I can watch on my TV through Poker Central (using Roku) and on my laptop on PokerGo.com -- both need a the subscription. You also need the subscription to view the archives.

BTW, I'll be canceling my subscription as soon as the last PLO FT has been broadcast.

I'm still disgusted with Poker Central's coverage. One would think that it's the WSONLHE. Oh, how I long for the good ol' days of ESPN.
