And the academy award for best picture goes to.... (1 Viewer)

Whatever. Neither movie should have won even among those nominated.

Conspiracy theory twitter is loving it, though.

Did make for a pretty sweet photo, too.

LOL, The Rock's look is priceless :)
That was crazy, watching it live (on tv) was surreal, I looked at my wife when I saw the guy with the headset running around behind them grabbing envelopes, and I said "something isn't right...." and then they flipped it...
I only saw Hidden Figures, so I can't comment on who deserved it...

Well you can at least comment on who didn't deserve it. God that movie was horrifically, embarrassingly bad.

I'm probably being overly harsh on LLL and Moonlight. They were both very good imo but Manchester by the Sea and Arrival were both clearly the best two of the nominees to me.

Politics and political correctness simply have no business in show business... Unfortunately, the injection of PC into the Oscars hasn't done anything to improve their legitimacy. When you use race as a determining factor in the movie's worthiness of an Oscar, it delegitimized every award. People who won Oscars in 2017 should have an * next to their name in the history books... Was this the affirmative action year for the Oscars?

Black people won = affirmative action. Says more about you than Hollywood imo.

No, when ppl win (or anything is considered) for other than the merits of the movie, then I think thats not right. I heard many anylists saying (even before the broadcast) that "the academy" was responding to complaints that the awards were "too white".

So what things were the voters supporting other than the movie in your opinion?

I think the problem is you've decided to take someone else's opinion on a Hollywood race issue and run with it as fact on a poker forum :)

That is certainly not a loaded question ;)

Lol, racial issues are a touchy subject with me. I grew up experiencing race relations from a different viewpoint. My family is bi-racial (black step father). I grew up experiencing racism from both sides. I also feel the brunt of a lot of racial tension going on in society today. I have attended countless hours of racial and implicit bias training. However I have no time for political correctness. If you think that you've caught me in some racist statement, and that I'm digging a grave for myself, LOL.

I also have no time for an in-depth analysis and debate on an awards program that has very little viewership, and questionable validity (imho). My statement was simply that the Oscars have introduced political correctness and politics into their awards. If people think that's acceptable, then feel free to watch. However this is nothing new. Carry on.

And I did catch that final 5 minutes (wife had it on in bed). The dudes from LLL were class acts.

What evidence leads you to believe that the oscars introduced political correctness and politics into their awards?

Definitely scripted. The reason I think so is because the the wrong pick was La-La land and not Manchester or Lion etc. You have big names like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone standing on stage, ready to catch their emotions when they're robbed of their win etc. Its too dramatic. They also let those guys say their speeches before interrupting the announcement etc. Com'on..... Also Emma Stone had her announcement card on her the whole night. There was a 2nd one printed. It was intentional.

This. I havent watched the Oscars in years. Too political. Too rigged. They took so much heat last year because of the racial stuff, then this year a movie that grossed $26 million in 5 months now wins the best picture??????????

What sucks though is that the actors/movie that truly deserve the Oscar, now have to contend with politics vs winning based purely on merit. I'm so sick of the press pushing the racial theme. There seems to be certain controversial themes the press latches on to every so often and bombards the public for ratings. It really stirs things up. Remember Occupy Wallstreet? Ebola? OMFG time to move to an island and unplug.

Generally the burden is on people making assertions to show some evidence of their assertion. I made no assertion about the oscars becoming more political. @Triharder did. I just asked for his evidence.

This not a trial... lol

It's the internet, where I can make all sorts of crazy claims without having to fulfill some burden of proof...

By the way, the sky is blue.. just don't ask me how I know.

But seriously, claiming that Hollywood (and the Oscars) are political, is not much of an accusation. Now if I had made a personal attack, or accusation against someone here on this forum, then I think it is reasonable to ask someone for evidence to support their claim. But as it stands, I'm not one who likes to argue just for the sake of arguing. Especially for something as trivial as the Oscars Carry on.

Ps. Besides, I have poker to play. Ho-Chunk, here I come.

I'm assuming you've been living in America with access to news and the internet the last 12 months... yes?

By the way, the sky is blue..

Prove it!!!! :ROFLMAO:

The message that comes across has been "plebians, build bridges, not walls! Walls are for elite white people like us!

I don't care what they're saying: a four hour live award show where Hollywood pats itself on the back is antiquated. Awkward speeches and huge gaps between awards make it unwatchable for me. If they could knock the whole thing out in about 1.5 hours I would probably watch more of it.

You didn't merely claim they were political. You specifically claimed that race was used to determine winners and that those who received oscars in 2017 weren't legitimate winners:

When you use race as a determining factor in the movie's worthiness of an Oscar, it delegitimized every award. People who won Oscars in 2017 should have an * next to their name in the history books... Was this the affirmative action year for the Oscars?

If you're comfortable making those kinds of allegations and refusing to provide any evidence for them, I guess that's your call. There's a pretty deep level of hypocrisy when you assume race related motivations of others on the basis of who wins and then get offended when someone asks you for evidence of your assertion.

I agree. To be clear, the oscars are straight garbage and should be boycotted by everyone in the film industry.
