Reinstate Pete Rose with a written apology from the comish. Bonds and Clemens better get in as well. IMO if these three are in the Hall then the entire Hall of Fame is a illegitimate.

He should be in, but there''s zero chance that will ever happen, even if he's reinstated. Friggen Curt Schilling is being kept out of the Hall for character issues, and all that's about is that he's proven himself to be an asshole, since retiring. What chance does Pete have of ever getting by the ridiculous character clause?

How about Hall of Fame, but not reinstated. He deserves to be in based on his on-field accomplishments, but he did bet on baseball games when he was a manager (including his own team's games) then continued to lie about it forever. Also, Shoeless Joe Jackson should also be in the Hall of Fame.

ow about Hall of Fame, but not reinstated.
That's an elegant solution, except that the BBHOF has a rule that a person that is on the lifetime ban list of MLB can't be elected to the HOF. Rose even appealed it to the BBHOF and lost.

I'm not arguing with you, but FFS, there are a ton of assholes in the BBHOF. Its the Baseball Hall of Fame, not the Baseball Hall of Likeable Gentlemen. No one in the BBHOF ever lied?!

Also, Shoeless Joe Jackson should also be in the Hall of Fame.

Schilling was a very good pitcher, and probably deserves to be in the Hall based on his on-field performances, but he wasn't near Rose's level. All-time hits leader? Comparing the two is iffy at best. Rose had a 79.7 career WAR (avg. outfielder in the HOF is 65.7) Schilling had a 79.5 career WAR, but the average pitcher HOF WAR is 73.2, so it's not as clear a case. Also, Schilling's HoF Monitor is 171 (likely HoFer is 100), while Rose's is 305.

I voted "other"...

Entered into Half of Fame, not reinstated.

Leaves a bit of a question mark over his legacy, which is kind of necessary. Dude gambled. Do other major athletes? Probably. But he got caught.

Yeah, bad comparison, more of a character clause rant.
The first thing that comes to mind with Rose, aside from 4,000 hits and that haircut, is the image of him trying to murder that catcher to win an all-star game. Not many guys compete like that. He was the man.

Wait, gambling is okay if you don't get caught? C'mon.

I can make arguments that betting for or against the Reds was problematic. Did he leave a pitcher in too long to fuck up his arm for his next three starts? Did he have insider information? Did he leave a player in because he needed his bat and overlooked his weak glove/arm?

You shouldn't bet on things that you have direct control over... That's shady. There's no doubt Rose is shady. But when not being shady, he was an amazing batter and a fierce competitor. What's the harm in letting him back in MLB? If nothing else, he would be a helluva spokesman for walking the line and not ending up in the same boat he did.

What's the harm in letting him in?

What's the harm with 4-cards on the flop? 2 on the turn... and 12 on the river?

It's their rules, not mine. And I didn't decide to make a career of playing their game.

Sorry. I just don't have much tolerance for people who bitch about the rules after they get burned by them.

PS/EDIT: Even after this little rant, I still think he should be IN the HOF.

While I personally can’t understand why he’s still out, just pick a damn brand.

I just wish they’d pick a personality and stick with it. They’re either entertainment, where “gamesmanship” is allowed (I’d tell my entire team to try and cheat every game after Astros got no punishment), or they’re the building block of the USA and good ol days, not letting anyone play who’s values differ from the league and who doesn’t tithe.

Cause they obviously don’t have the common sense to work this middle ground well. Makes me so damn thankful for Adam Silver.

Honestly... I think he'll eventually get in. When he runs his mouth he doesn't help himself, and I'm sure that's what makes MLB leery. They just don't want it to look like they're doing something on Pete's terms.

It might even be posthumously, but it is my belief that MLB will ultimately put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame.

This probably isn't the place where people will have a negative opinion of gambling. As far as I know, he never bet on the Reds to lose, and was never found to have influenced a game in any way. IN MY OPINION, what the Astros were found to do was way worse.

He has served his time. Put him in and let him make some money off of what he has accomplished. Can't ignore that he had one of the best careers ever.

I absolutely think he belongs in the Hall.

I wonder if you took this poll among current and former major leaguers, what the results would look like. And would it differ between current and former.

So what you are saying is that when the MLB caught a legend gambling on the sport they should have quietly forced him to play basketball for 2 years before reinstating him and then letting him be a first ballot hall of Famer?

Voted reinstated and voted in.

Two really good arguments:

The guy bet on baseball -- the Reds even -- when he was a manager. That doesn't diminish his accomplishments as a player.

I have always been supportive of MLB's treatment of Pete Rose. But if they aren't going to take back a championship after proof rules were broken, then what they did to Rose is clearly out of proportion.

All things being equal Pete should get in or, just for starters, OJ should be ousted and titles stripped from the Pats & Astros

Don’t know what Adam Silver has to do with this, but if this did actually happen, and he was connected to it as an assistant to the commish or working through NBA entertainment, I still love his overall body of work.

He might have had a shot before the Astros scandal. Using it now as justification for his eligibility shows just how clueless he remains...

Of course, due to a deal between the MLB and MLBPA, players were given immunity in the Astros (and presumably Red Sox) investigations in exchange for talking to investigators.

Dude.... don't get me f*cking started on the hypocrisy of MLB...

- PED addicts with boosted numbers can use said boosted stats to get into the HOF.
- But a guy who had natural sick stats based on a diet of beer and hot dogs can't get get into the HOF, because he had a gambling addiction??

It's total bullshit. One of the (many) reasons I think MLB is run by a bunch of hypocrites.
