I think I know the answer to this, but wanted to check if I wasn't thinking about this right/fairly.

If I have a small portion of each tournament going to a league championship, and there is someone who is clearly without a shadow of any doubt a one time guest (e.g. out of the country family of a player type of thing) - am I ok not to charge that portion of the buy-in (given that I have it clearly stated as a certain component of the buy-in)? Or should I be charging everyone the same, regardless of the fact that they would never be able to play in our championship tournament.

In our leagues, everybody who plays pays the one-time registration fee along with the full price buy-in at each event (which is raked for the free-roll Championship game). And those who qualify for the Championship with fewer than 50% regular-season participation pay extra fees to make up for it.

$10 out of every 1st buy-in in every one of our tournaments goes to the championship prize pool wether you play once or every month.

I'm curious how you do the less than 50% pay in - do they have to pay their way between the gap of what they paid and what they would have need to have paid if they were in at least half?

Exactly correct. Nine events total, and short qualifiers pay $10 for each event shy of five. Qualifiers with 5+ attended events play for free.

$60 buy-in = $45 to prize pool, $5 to bounty, $5 to finals, and $5 to dealer pool.

I’m such a push over, I would without a doubt not charge him that fee. Even though I definitely should and charging everybody the same is obviously the correct answer.

I would say charge him. He gets to play in a well organized (I hope) tournament, that alone is worth the extra $.

Were I in his shoes I would gladly pay the extra fee regardless of whether the money goes to a TOC I can't attend, sending someone (which won't be me) to WSOP, rake (legal or illegal), or as in my tournaments the rent for the location. I would get to play poker without the hassle of organizing, so I would pay it AND find a way to tip the host, e.g. money, beer, whatever (except in the rake case, that's tips enough).

Off topic: When it comes to paying extra or tipping, I have found that people who host themselves are more inclined to do so. Perhaps they don't take it all for granted?
