Next time we have a tournament, I want to bring some variety to the cash game after we finish. I'm set up to do $10 or $20 buy-ins for .05/.10 NLHE, 4-6 players. Breakdown as follows:

100 x 5c
100 x 25c
160 x $1
20 x $10
20 x $20

Keep in mind:
1. Nobody has played anything but hold 'em (and very little of that).
2. We're pretty drunk by this time and bad-ish at math (for a group of engineers)
3. It's a very social game.

I think we could handle one new game. At most two. What do you guys suggest?

SOHE is out no matter what you all say.

Obvious candidates are:
Limit Holdem
Pineapple
Pot Limit Omaha

They're only minor variations on what the players already know so they will be easy to pick up. Pineapple is probably the best gateway drug here. Omaha may be a bit confusing, and limit holdem may be too similar.

^^^ This.

the best choice imo is PLO. if you think there's a likelihood for confusion with PLO (whether due to unfamiliarity or drunkenness), i would say crazy pineapple first then moving onto PLO after the players get accustomed to getting more than 2 cards.

I'd recommend no limit Omaha. Pot limit means you have to count the pot all the time and multiple raises on a street can make a sober mind hurt. Keep it simple.

DrStrange

PS There isn't anything wrong with no limit 5-card draw. That needs a 4-6 man table anyway, everyone knows how to play that {mostly badly}.

Crazy Pineapple is ahead I think. It always sounds fun and then slips my mind until it comes up again. For Omaha, there's drawbacks for no limit, pot limit and fixed limit.

If your goal is to entice your players into the world of mixed games (a worthy goal IMO) and you want to stick with traditional casino-type games, then I suggest Pineapple, either Crazy discard after the flop) or Lazy (discard after the river). If you want to venture into a new type of game, 7-card Stud and 5-card draw are traditional games that serve as the basis for just about all of the non-flop mixed that many of us like to play.

I think lazy pineapple is a better gateway game to omaha.

Totally agree. Lazy Pineapple (also called Tahoe) uses three hole cards, requires no discards, and players may use zero, one, or two (but never three) of their hole cards combined with the board to make their best five-card hand.

Played no-limit, it's the perfect transition game from NLHE to Omaha. Once your players get used to Tahoe, you can either add other Pineapple variations or jump straight to NL Omaha (hi only) -- which will be much easier once they've already got used to not being allowed to use all of their hole cards to make a hand.

Around these parts, Tahoe is a 5 card PLO variant where you play either 2 from the hand and 3 from the board, or all 5 from the hand. I hate the non-standard names for these games...

I thought ^that^ was Big-O.

big o is 5 card omaha where you must play 2 and only 2 from your hand. in the vast majority of cases - and in all i've seen where it's offered in a casino - it is played hi/lo. occasionally you'll see it played high only in home games.
