Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone has any strong opinions about the claysith chips. I know they aren't paulson, but for a cheaper version I was thinking of their rock line as an every day cheap set.
Thanks

There are nicer cheapo sets in the same price range, imo.

Not once you figure in the exchange rate and shipping, though. You can get 500 of the Claysmiths for $130 Cdn shipped (StraightPokerSupplies). I have a sample set and they are nice enough. For comparison, the Poker Knights are approx $190 Cdn shipped ($75 US + $80 USD shipping...).

Junior: I can loan you my sample set if you want to see what they are like. Send me PM if interested.

The 13.5g chips by Spades Gaming are sold by several outlets for 15c each (in rolls of 50) plus shipping. That's $75 USD plus $45 shipping (USPS International Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box, up to 20lbs) for a total of $120 USD, which works out to about $140 CDN. Even considering the base chip cost, shipping, and exchange rate, that seems competitive -- and for a much nicer chip, imo.

Any of the Spades Gaming chips -- Poker Knights, Showdown Club, and Monaco Club -- offer a softer feel and sound than the harder 13.5g chips from Claysmith (Bluff Canyon, The Mint, Desert Heat, Gold Rush, Rock-n-Roll, etc.), regardless if on the greek key or stitch mold.

I will be posting a 1000 set of PGIs great walls in the coming days. Was originally intended for a .25/.25 and .25/.50. If youre looking for a cash set around those stakes, PM me and we can talk price

I was using shipping as quoted at Apache. If you can get it shipped at your quoted price, I agree. Whether those chips are nicer or not is up to the owner (I have samples of both).

I recently played in an underground game which used $1/$5 Claysmith Poker Knights chips. My reactions:

Initially, I was just glad to see that at least we wouldn’t be playing with dice chips.

The chips were well-worn, so I didn’t have any complaints about sharp edges (which I’ve seen on some review sites). They still stacked neatly, with no warping/spinners, and shuffled decently enough, having a slightly rubbery yet smooth surface feel. They don’t have any of the subtle texture of clays.

That said, I felt they were way too heavy. After about a half-hour of shuffling, on and off, my hand was already starting to feel cramped (whereas I’ll go all night riffling Paulson's or ASMs without ever thinking about it). Officially they are 13.5g; it’s amazing how much difference a few grams can make.

It also seems kind of shameless of Claysmith to so closely simulate Top Hat & Canes. The Spade-and-dagger mold is clearly meant to look, at a glance, like a Paulson. I’m surprised that Paulson hasn’t gone after them for it, but it may not make enough difference to their business.

Sidenote: The table I was playing on had black speedcloth, and the cards moved very well on them. The one complaint I had about the speedcloth was that it had seen a lot of use, and seemed to have taken on a somewhat greasy sheen in places. Probably because the hosts provide pizza... Anyway, this game has been going on about a year with just two games weekly, and it definitely needs replacing.

Fwiw, Claysmith had nothing to do with the Poker Knights design. They later bought out the company and/or rights to use the design.

Interesting... But since they continue to make and sell them, seems to me that shows they have no qualms about the design.

Cigar & Snifter, Tower & Spear, Cup & Biscuit (I may have made one of those up, I dunno). I don't think Paulson could legally challenge any of these because they're similar, but not copies.

A punter would not buy a CPS chip thinking it's a Paulson because of the T&S design. Not without being an uncommonly idiotic idiot anyway.

Where'd you get that? 1 USD = 1.29 CAD on Google today, which means you'd actually have to pay more like 1.31 or 1.32.

125 USD is at least 155 CAD.

Probably not. But if I manufactured a car which looked like a vintage Mercedes, but performed like a Pinto, I expect a letter would soon arrive from a Benz lawyer.
