Updating the story of my favorite customs!

Ironically, the idea for this set started out in Fall of 2010 as a small tourney set of solids, solely an excuse to use ASM's mandarin red and the newly introduced butterscotch and charcoal. This quickly changed to a Cali-color cash set so I could use the desired colors in a progression I liked. I also wanted something local as a symbol of our proud city and tied to my fledgling card room, and the twin spires of Churchill Downs were perfect for the mold. Most who know me and the theme of my customs and card room know that my online poker name is Courage (a tribute to the Courage the Cowardly Dog cartoon and a reminder to play aggressively since I was a timid player). J5 worked his design magic and I lol'd but loved his clever use of riding crops to replace the crossed swords in my usual logo. Here were some initial ideas:

We settled soon enough on a variation of the top middle design that included a unique color font he'd made and soon enough this mock-up was born:

The original set was 800 chips delivered March 2011 and I could not believe how spectacular they were. They fit my theme, had a simple, graceful design, and I knew they were something special. In fact, it seemed weird at first, like they didn't belong to me. I was ecstatic, and nothing beats hosting games with a custom set you love.

The infamous CT meat-ups at berg's house got me back into live poker, mixed games, but more importantly a connection with awesome people from all over. I simply had to host a meat-up, but didn't think I could pull it off or create the kind of event that would inspire people to travel to Louisville. I got lots of help online and locally and Derby City Showdown was born. Obv an immediate 1600 pc add-on was necessary!

JimB at ASM knew this event was important to me, and sent these as a surprise. I couldn't believe it. Very gracious, and I'd never seen this little-used spot before. It created the need to add a $500 chip.

Meat-ups need 60mm custom dealer buttons from Old West Poker Supplies.

Several add-ons have been done, and more to come! Need 300 - 400 more lil green deuces!

It wasn't always a smooth ride. ASM Vegas produced some horrendous chips, although ultimately these were replaced.

The subsequent creation of CPC restored quality chips and service to the world! I'll probably add a commemorative $5 for DCS5 this year.

If you're still with me, thanks for reading. I get a ton of joy and satisfaction sharing these chips with friends and nothing is better than hosting a meat-up or having new players at my game notice the chips and start to get curious about them. Enjoy!

Full set as of 3/2/2015:

Super pr0n! You should start a chip-pr0n production company and start making special-interest DVDs...

Awesome set, Chris. Always love your eye for chip design.

Make moar sets plz! ;)

love the idea of commemorative chips as an add-on to an already existing denom to get chips for a meet-up. great new pr0n, chris!

Can not come up with the right words to describe how awesome this set and story is. Nice work, congrats and holy sh!t they're so awesome.

Thanks for the compliments! Some of you had significant input in the design and color choices and I really appreciate it. BGinGA helped steer me toward a cash set and the colors on the $20, jbutler, abby99, and berg always awesome advice, and there are many others.

What's missing? An updated shot of the massive family altogether, which I hope to soon remedy.

One of the top three sets of all time in my humble opinion... Everything about those chips work perfectly... The new table layout is superb also!

I hope I can make it to the "Club" one day (and soon!)!

Congrats again Courage!

Edit: Forgot to mention, the hot stamped set is equally awesome!!

Dude, as much as you're getting around this year if you miss DCS that is a crime.

This is the first set I played on that belonged to a member of the community and one I've liberally lifted ideas from for my own set. Great concept and execution from start to finish.

For sure Tom!!

And I would have to drive only half the distance compared to my drive to the "Post" in a couple of months!

Those are great chips. May inspire me to take the plunge into customs in the future.

You can't do it any better.
The $2 chips are out of this world. Love the splashed pot pic of these.

I just LOVE that 25¢. So simple and stunning. It's up there as one of my favourite custom chips.

love, Love, LOVE this whole set. First custom set I've ever played with... and they say don't fall in love with your first! meh...

Thanks, all! Full set pics added to OP.

I must say that if I designed my own favorite chip, it would look almost EXACTLY like that $20. Fantastic chip, great set!

One of the nicest sets I have ever seen... the colors are phenomena. Nice job!

I just wish I had 199 more sample sets.

Chris, got any extras?

199 is a tall order Dave. I got 99 problems. [emoji12]
