So after weeks of waiting for the folks at All-In Magazine to put down money for materials, the wait is finally over. I have all of my materials ordered and will start building soon. The budget for materials for twenty tables was only $3,000, so they will be pretty plain-looking. However, after the project is finished I plan on moving into building other supplies such as solid wood chip cases and card boxes. I'd love to hear some feedback on whether or not this is something any members might have any interest in. I know that many people really loved ASM's chip cases and I would like to fill that void. Again, this is not an order thread, but merely a thread to gauge interest in these items and to show the building process of these tables.

Thank you all.

With legs that's going to be a very tight budget for materials! I spent 60 dollars just on the legs for my poker table lol. Looking forward to seeing the table builds!

I would absolutely love to see what you would be able to offer for wooden cases for my ASM set(s) :)

Try to optimize your fabrication. Minimize changing setups. Think assembly line. Use chip board if applicable rather than higher grade ply. If it makes sense to hire cheap, unskilled labor to assist, do so.

There's no way I could've afforded to use high-grade ply. I hate the idea of having to use cheaper wood, but even with the cheapest materials I could bear to use I still came up a little over budget. I will be running it very much like an assembly line. The financier will make a pick up every other week or so, so I won't have to worry about having a bunch of finished tables laying around.

Interested in wooden chip cases here as well! (hope you notice the "s" at the end of "case"):)

As soon as that adventure begins I will be sure to keep everyone informed.

I too would be interested in some nice, well made storage options.

Thank you both for your interest. :)

Crikey!

I would go any buy 20 of those cheap round tables with the folding legs and say 'here they are!'

Geesh, they're probably thinking "Well, if you can buy a folding table at Dicks Sporting Goods for under $200...."

Maybe you can adjust the dimensions down a bit to make the numbers work?

One of the most aggravating things is that they kept looking at my table and saying "this is what we want". Sorry guys; not gonna happen. I only went over budget by $50, so I'm not worried about it. Luckily I have a plunge router and a few flush trim bits, so that will make the woodworking aspect of it much easier. I also sprung for a pneumatic stapler because I knew that my hands would probably fall off if I tried to use a manual one for all twenty tables.

I remember how my hands felt after using a manual stapler for ONE table....can't imagine the agony of doing twenty this way!! :)

Yeah I did about 1/8 of my octagon manually and then I dug out the pneumatic stapler and put the remaining 10,000 staples in with that lol

I've built about six tables so far and I've done every one of them with a manual stapler. I just figured in would help in the long run. Plus I got some other nice tools to make table building move a little faster like a 99" straight-edge clamp and a plate that connects my router to the straight edge as well as a good staple puller. I'm in it for the long haul!

The great thing is that I love working with my hands and creating things, so I've really got nothing to complain about. Once finals are over I can focus on this project full-time and really get these tables hammered out.

I did about 20 tables with a manual staple gun before going pneumatic. I don't know what I was thinking not making the change earlier especially since I already had a compressor.

Yeah, I've had a compressor since I started building tables and never went pneumatic until now.

Interest piqued for wooden storage options.

I promised to keep everyone updated. Thanks for your interest!

What brand stapler do you guys use? The Harbor Freight model is appealingly cheap, even for a single table...

Porter cable

I got this Surebonder stapler. It has a lot of really great reviews. It may have been wiser to go for a brand that's a little more trusted like Porter-Cable, but for under $40 I figured I'd give it a try. I'll make sure to post how it works.

We use a couple of Porter Cable guns on the basement. The framing gun and 2 smaller ones for baseboard and door trim. Nice cases and accessories. Quality stuff. My Porter cable cordless got a good workout too. No issues at all. Just follow the manufacturers instructions for the air guns. Usually a couple drops of oil before use.

Gonna bump this thread with a question. Would anyone be interested in casino-style drink carts? Here's the hitch: it would be kind of an Ikea set-up. I would make the carts and all you would have to do is assemble them. This way the shipping is more cost-effective and the assembly would be very easy.
