I was thinking about getting some airtites for some random chips I have and providing them to my regulars as card guards. But does anyone actually use them in casual low value home games?

I use a silver dollar as a card guard. A few other guys just use a chip off the stack, or a bounty/show em.

I almost ALWAYS use a card protector.

In the MTTD, the only floor judge ruling I had to make in the ME involved a HUGE pot when it was down to 3 players... Almost all-in for the two involved, the dealer accidentally swept one of the player's cards into the muck, and I was called over to render judgment. My first question "Were your cards protected?". Response was "No"... Sucks, but sh!t happens, protect your cards. Protecting your cards is especially important when you're dealing, since it's easy to confuse the piles of cards in front of you.

I have several, ranging from polished Labradorite (which I keep to honour a departed friend from the Rock), to a $5.00 coin, to Year of the Dragon chips. I even have a quartz donkey my daughter bought me. I used to have a guard that spun to randomize my play. Results went from "fold" to "all-in" and just about everything in between. tilted the hell out of serious players when they realized I was actually DOING what it said, most of the time blind.

$4 Luxor drop chip. I really should get an airtite for it but...

I used to do this, but I kept forgetting to put that stupid chip into the pot when I went all in. I now have a few card guards that I rotate through.

Lol. I have done this, and was only called by villain. Went in for my last $5 on the river and villain moans like I had $500.

Shouldn't be an issue - if you verbally declare "all in" then the chip guarding your cards is included (assuming it's live in the game.) If you just shove all your chips except the guard into the pot.... well, yeah.

I usually verbally declare. It just slowed stuff down when people matched the bet and then had to add it after the fact once we realized we didn't include that chip.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that's happened at our games more than a few times, for sure.

ALWAYS.
I have swept a few unprotected hands when I have dealt. (Both times the same guy...he was vocal in his displeasure, but the other guys at the table backed me up.)
I have a silver dollar, and a smoothed jade stone.
Doesn't matter which, whatever my hand lands on in my purse first.

I used to use a pewter Yoda figure, you know 'Power Of The Force' and all that, but I got over it pretty quick and just use a chip or a whole stack now.

I had card guards made from OWPS when I had my dealer buttons made. Because it's the same size as my DB, I don't use the protector during my own home games, but I will take it on the road if I remember.

But if you're headed for a casino, keep in mind that some tournaments and cash games don't allow card guards more than a half-inch high.

This is what I use:

By the rules, my card guard from OWPS was too big in diameter. I asked TD Jack Effiel about it (because it was barely too big in diameter) and he said to bring it anyway and he would have to make a ruling in person. I read this as "if it causes problems/complaints then no, otherwise, OK.

It played just fine...

I use one of these every time I play. Mainly it is the $5 from Monaco, but I will use the ASM holiday chips during the appropriate month.
When we play at my house most of the players borrow one for the night.

Used to use a Thai medallion, before I gave it to a buddy. A few times I would forget it at the table after busting. Use a chip most of the time; good to have a couple unique chips that will not blend with the set in play - especially in SOHE when you need to cap each hand.

An absolutely stunning case - just for card guards! Every time I think I've gone off the deep end with my poker paraphernalia, this group reminds me that the water I'm in is still just waist deep.

I was thinking the exact same thing... :)

I use a military challenge coin from my brother's unit when they were in Afghanistan. It's got really cool artwork of a Chinook (the company he commanded was Chinooks) and it good and weighty to keep the cards from being swept anywhere.

Also usually starts a few fun conversations.

I use two. The lucky cat sits on top of the biggest denom in my stack. It's his job to whisper in my ear when I'm about to do something dumb. The horseshoe I use to cap my cards.

What was he whispering when you were pulling the trigger on 3 new tables? :D
