my stepdaughter has taken to buying vinyl, which is a fun hobby even if she hasn't yet fully grasped the quality of stereo equipment one needs to have to fully appreciate the vinyl, but...baby steps... she listens to bands that proudly call themselves pop punk (a phrase that grates on my nerves, but that's my problem i guess), but doesn't really have any idea of the history the genre and certainly not of punk music generally.

her favorite bands at this point are real friends, neck deep, the story so far, and a few other groups i'm not familiar with. i've gotten her some records by those bands, but also wanted to get her a few things that would ease her into the history of the music she likes. i'm not trying to challenge her, so i'm trying to stay pretty close to the tone of what she already digs. i'd also like to grab a few groups who might not typically be thought of as pop punk but who do fit into the theme of catchy, easy-to-grasp punk.

the below lists don't reflect my tastes necessarily, though i definitely like some of the stuff. i grew up more with hardcore and metal and while i was aware of the sunnier side of punk, i never really jumped on board. since i was never fully immersed in that realm, i thought some folks here might have some suggestions for things i've overlooked. remember that i'm not trying to get her to fall in love with the underrated gems we might prefer, but rather just expose her to a sort of best of list from the genre. so while it might seem a bit saccharine to include a band like blink 182, they are a band she likes, so i'm trying to respect that taste and find similarly straightforward, easily accessible, poppy music. think of it as a punk AM top forty.

so the obvious high point (again, from the perspective of a teenager) albums i've already bought for her are dookie (green day) and enema of the state (blink 182). i also picked up the ramones greatest hits (mania), punk in drublic (nofx), and 13 songs (fugazi). the fugazi album is a bit of a stretch, but honestly i think waiting room alone is enough to pique her interest. i considered milo goes to college (descendents), stranger than fiction (bad religion), and smash (offspring) but i don't think they'd be to her liking.

there are a lot of bands i've never been fond of, but who i think fall in line with her tastes. i'm thinking perhaps through being cool (saves the day), is a real boy (say anything), and i'm sure there are a few others i'm unaware of. i'd like to include diary (sunny day real estate) and here's where the strings come in (superchunk), but i'm not sure if she'd dig them.

anyone have any other suggestions or opinions on the above?

Diary and is a real boy are great ads.

Some of the suggestion stray a little from pop punk but I'm thinking of some iconic albums that are sort of close here and some that may lead to some great music and albums

for this type of music I would try to get...

brand new - déjà entendu and your favorite weapon
taking back Sunday - tell all your friends
the postal service - give up
american football
Death cab for cutie - transatlanticism
get up kids - something to write home about
my chemical romance - three cheers to sweet revenge
the promise ring - nothing feels good
Thursday - full collapse

And for newer bands...

the wonder years - any and all if she likes pop punk
tigers jaw
La dispute (a little harder than pop punk)
joyce manor
Balance and composure

I would start with the wonder years and tigers jaw on the new stuff as I bet she will dig them both right away

Also full disclosure - I was getting into vinyl for a bit but have given up on it and have some of the records suggested that I can sell. Also have some stuff that you may like based on your post. Let me know if you are interested and I can pull a list together

I don't know the bands she is listening to, but I do like pop punk.

Clash - London Calling and Combat Rock
Rancid - Out Come the Wolves
Greenday
Blink 182

Some stuff that was more like cousins on the same family tree:
Too Much Joy - Cereal Killers, Mutiny, ...Finally - This band is a descendant of the clash, but not like rancid.
Bracket - Highly underrated band from the bay area. More harmonic nuance than green day (their guitarist knows all the chords), less interesting bass.

Falafel Boy (not available on vinyl. Influenced no one you have heard of. I would send copy for free)

This is a favorite Bracket track.

My favorite Too Much Joy Track

One of the greatest songs of all time. Period.

The other bands I listed are all pretty big mainstream acts. They don't need much help.

The Vandals
Pennywise
Goldfinger
AFI
Lagwagon

These are punk-ish pop-metal kinda kinda bands from 90s-2000s era that weren't completely awful and may appeal to this demographic.

Clash - London Calling and Combat Rock

I don't see The Clash as a pop-punk band. They're much more of the real deal in my eyes.

Not sure where to put the Killers, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy in the history of Pop Punk. Too recent to be of interest?

This list is not strictly pop punk, but I think most will hit the mark for that type of music. Some of it is a little more off the pop punk beat but is kind of a likely progression when getting into this type of music. Some artists are available on vinyl, but I don't know for sure and I didn't use that criteria for the bands I listed.

Less Than Jake
Reel Big Fish
Home Grown
Goldfinger
Zebrahead
A New Found Glory
The Academy Is...
AFI
Alkaline Trio
The Ataris
Authority Zero
Bad Religion
Catch 22
The Dead Milkmen
Dial-7
Everclear
Flogging Molly
Hawthorne Heights
The Hippos
Jimmy Eat World
The Living End
The Mad Caddies
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
MXPX
NOFX
The Offspring
Penny and the Loafers
Pennywise
Presidents of the United States of America
The Real Mckenzies
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Rehasher
Save Ferris
Story of the Year
Suburban Legends
Suburban Rhythm
Thrice
The Toadies

I fully disagree with you on Pennywise, AFI and and Lagwagon. those are really great skate punk bands. AFI was pretty good back in the 90's . Suck now

Im not a huge fan of 'pop punk' but classics of course are blink, Sum41, SR-71 (check out their stuff from early-mid 2000's! pretty good) and New found glory.

I was always a hard punk/hardcore kid growing up. By hardcore I mean NYC street shit like H20, Sick of it all, Strife, Shutdown etc.. shit that will put hair on your chest

But fav bands still are Strung out, Pennywise, Millencollin (They are a MUST here for punk fans), No use for a name, Pulley, 10 foot pole, Big wig, Gob (old gob).

Try to steer her away from processed boy band 'punk' and into some late 90s/early 2K skate punk :)

nice list tommythecat! :)

She should be listening to The Who

I have a pal whose answer to everything is "The Who"!

Millencolin and pennywise as mentioned already. Also Frenzal Rhomb and Unwritten Law (personal favorite. Mainly their older stuff, newer stuff meh.)

Not really my type of music, but I would have thought :
Sum41
Green Day
Good Charlotte
Bowling for Soup
Blink 182
and The Ramones as the originators of the genre (or even The Dickies though I only ever heard the singles not albums of theirs)

I notice you mention Dookie in the OP - does that have Basket Case on it? That's about the only Green Day song I like and that is probably due to the video.

Maybe introduce her to

Metallica
AC/DC
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Ozzy

ect.....

just sayin :)

I have a daughter that is 25. She bartends/waitresses right now (while waiting for a Radiographer course to open up). Anyways, she will use her playlist on her phone for the music. Its loaded with Rock/Metal shit that she heard me listening to. Makes me so proud, lol.

She has told me that when these songs pop up her friends will be like "wtf". Its nothing that they listen to.

thanks for the responses so far, guys. definitely a couple i'll have to give a chance. i think i had sort of forgotten about all the skate punk bands my friends listened to in high school so i'll have to try millencolin, lagwagon, and a couple others.

a few are pretty far afield from where i'm going. i love the clash and slayer, but they're not at all in the vein of what she is interested in.

Earlier stuff from No Doubt might fit the bill, though maybe considered more Ska
Joan Jett
Runaways
Volent Femmes
All American Rejects
Blondie
Social Distortion
Talking Heads

Combat Rock is perhaps the WORST full album that the Clash ever put out. It is the only thing from them that I bought and then gave away. And I kept Radio Clash, okay? Get her everything up to and including Sandinista by the Clash. The early stuff is punk without the pop, but there are some gems, like the cover of I fought the Law. Also, it will give her a good foundation to see where some of the bands in the pop punk genre got their inspiration.

Give 'em Enough Rope is probably the last pure punk album they did, after which the reggae influences become more prominent, thank you Don Letts

as i said above, i love the clash (beyond measure - even combat rock), but obviously if i'm trying to hit the highlights of pop punk i'm not giving her four fucking clash albums.

Honorable mention to simple plan for pop punk. I really enjoyed their first album. My guilty music pleasure.
They used to be a really great skate punk bandcalled Reset from Quebec before simple plan

this is exactly why i started this thread. there was an entire group of pop punk bands in the 90s/00s that i simply dismissed as garbage and never listened to for even as much as a single track - simple plan, sum 41, good charlotte - but who have been mentioned multiple times in this thread, so i'll have to give them a shot, i suppose.

Social Distortion = FTW
Mike Ness (two solo albums, Social Distortion's vocalist) = Both albums are awesome, I could say they are "cowpunk"
Volbeat
Sum 41
My Chemical Romance
Weezer
Die Toten Hosen (German band, great)
Dillinger Four
Dropkick Murphys
Good Charlotte
Good Riddance

Social Distortion

Social Distortion = FTW

i agree with this wholeheartedly, but unfortunately she's been exposed to social d through rock band (or guitar hero, can't remember) so they are forever classified as a kind of kids' music in her mind, i think. the destruction of bands' legacies through RB/GH could be a whole other thread.

Rammstein - Du Hast

already have this for her - meant to include it in my OP. top pop punk of all time maybe.

Sadly Weezer's best album - Pinkerton - gets basically no love from teenagers these days, even those who know and like the band. Their later stuff is really, really spotty imo. Since Maladroit I'll find maybe two songs per album I dig.
