my stepdaughter has taken to buying vinyl, which is a fun hobby even if she hasn't yet fully grasped the quality of stereo equipment one needs to have to fully appreciate the vinyl, but...baby steps... she listens to bands that proudly call themselves pop punk (a phrase that grates on my nerves, but that's my problem i guess), but doesn't really have any idea of the history the genre and certainly not of punk music generally.
her favorite bands at this point are real friends, neck deep, the story so far, and a few other groups i'm not familiar with. i've gotten her some records by those bands, but also wanted to get her a few things that would ease her into the history of the music she likes. i'm not trying to challenge her, so i'm trying to stay pretty close to the tone of what she already digs. i'd also like to grab a few groups who might not typically be thought of as pop punk but who do fit into the theme of catchy, easy-to-grasp punk.
the below lists don't reflect my tastes necessarily, though i definitely like some of the stuff. i grew up more with hardcore and metal and while i was aware of the sunnier side of punk, i never really jumped on board. since i was never fully immersed in that realm, i thought some folks here might have some suggestions for things i've overlooked. remember that i'm not trying to get her to fall in love with the underrated gems we might prefer, but rather just expose her to a sort of best of list from the genre. so while it might seem a bit saccharine to include a band like blink 182, they are a band she likes, so i'm trying to respect that taste and find similarly straightforward, easily accessible, poppy music. think of it as a punk AM top forty.
so the obvious high point (again, from the perspective of a teenager) albums i've already bought for her are dookie (green day) and enema of the state (blink 182). i also picked up the ramones greatest hits (mania), punk in drublic (nofx), and 13 songs (fugazi). the fugazi album is a bit of a stretch, but honestly i think waiting room alone is enough to pique her interest. i considered milo goes to college (descendents), stranger than fiction (bad religion), and smash (offspring) but i don't think they'd be to her liking.
there are a lot of bands i've never been fond of, but who i think fall in line with her tastes. i'm thinking perhaps through being cool (saves the day), is a real boy (say anything), and i'm sure there are a few others i'm unaware of. i'd like to include diary (sunny day real estate) and here's where the strings come in (superchunk), but i'm not sure if she'd dig them.
anyone have any other suggestions or opinions on the above?
