I received a text from Southwest this morning at 5:00 AM canceling my flight home from Dallas after Christmas :( I attempted to rebook but no flights available for 3 days. I tried to book a rental car but none of those were available either. So we are currently on a road trip back to Florida in my daughter’s car - ETA 3:00 AM. It’s going to be a long day at work tomorrow:yawn:

Good Luck and safe Travels Mark. Sorry this seems to keep repeating for you... with all those people yelling and screaming at the air port... I want tonsay thank you from the booking agents. I know how cool calm and collective you are, and I hope you know they appreciate it!

Nothing wrong with a last minute adventure! Get home safe, and remember... you took care of your staff for the holidays! It's ok it sometimes you have to lean back on them a bit!

Hope you had an amazing Christmas brother!

Ben

I was on hold with Southwest for over 5 hours  I finally talked with an agent but no other flights were available to arrive today into either Tampa or Sarasota. I even checked departures from other cites along our driving route.

I was definitely nice to the agent - they are not having a great day either.

If this wasn't a sign you should have stayed and played poker, I don't know what is.

Yeah, the airlines are a mess right now. Specifically Southwest. We were supposed to fly out of DEN yesterday to the in-laws. We never made it. Back home watching the news. 260 flights were cancelled out of DIA yesterday, 228 were SW flights. Fortunately, we were able to return home. I know many more people (families) are stranded around the country. We are just waiting to get our luggage back.
FYI- if you check a bag, your luggage will make the trip, regardless of whether you do or not. We could not get our bags back yesterday. They will be going to KC/MCI, Then fly back to DEN/DIA where we can then pick them up, or have them delivered. It’ll probably be 2-3 days before we get them back. Again, small problems compared to what many others are going through.
Sorry, you had those issues Mark. Have a safe drive home!

I can’t even get SW on the phone to cancel our return flight.

Sorry to hear Mark, hope tou get home safe.
Only when I was back home, I realised how lucky I was getting back home that weekend.
My checked bag is still in limbo, with my Christmas presents inside and plenty of other expensive stuff :(

At least the chips got home safe ;)
Happy holidays to you and your family my friend

I remember BA losing my Iron Case in Amsterdam with a $6K race bike in it. They delivered everything else and the guy said it was too big, sorry. WTF? I ended up calling in sick and went to Schiphol on the hunt. After a couple hours trying to get help, a KLM guy told me where they usually dump all the lost BA bags. There were partially hidden doors in a corridor. He told me to find one and see what happens. I found a room with thousands of bags and nobody watching them. After another hour I saw my case, pulled it out and was about to unlock it to check and some Dutch guy was pissed I was there. After looking at my ID and my name on the bag, he said there were some forms and a procedure. Neither of us had a pen. I told him to go get one…and I was out of there befo he came back.

On the train, a Dutch rail worker asked what was in the case. I told him it was a bike. I didn’t have a ticket for the bike and we argued about that for a few minutes. I argued it’s not a bike since it’s in a case. Eventually I won. Since then I almost never check bags. If I do in the future, I’m using AirTags.

After hearing about what happened to @k9dr, I read up a bit on the massive SW cancellations over the past couple days.

I've been a big SW evangelist for years, supporting them with my business and my word of mouth. I despise companies who hide the true cost of their services, and SW is the only major airline that doesn't charge checked bag fees, carry on fees, bathroom fees, snack fees, etc.

On top of that, their seats are wider and have more leg room than most economy class seats on other airlines, and I need every inch of leg and butt space I can get.

Unfortunately, I think this is the third time there had been a major wave of SW cancellations in the past couple of years. An anonymous redditor reports that their crew management system went tits up, and that is the main reason for the problems this week. SW blamed weather at first (of course), then went silent.

I will still fly SW, but I'm losing confidence. They need to get their act together.

Yeah I’m a SW fan too and won’t change for domestic. After this and the feds involved I have to believe they will be forced to invest so this doesn’t happen again…and maybe bounce the CEO.

Honestly we've used them almost exclusively for the last decade, including several large trips to the west coast/Hawaii. We recently used American for our Mexico trip after another problem with SWA and I am booked on AA for several flights coming up. I got tired of the SWA excuses regarding service and the drink coupons they just sent don't make up for the issues over the last few years.

I think SW, Spirit and Frontier are all ‘flying’ towards the bottom as fast as they can………..:cautious:

He’s a lame duck. I did some research on SW today. They are in a transition period. The old CEO is retiring, and I’m sure doesn’t give a shit. They new CEO takes over full on Jan. 23rd.

I used to fly SWA a lot all over TX for work. IMO it has gone downhill ever since the Wright Amendment restrictions ended. The business model that made them great was modified and they are attempting to become an AA or Delta but are not set up to do so due to lack of major hubs and with their out of date scheduling system. Their prices have also increased and are rarely competitive unless you choose a crap departure or arrival or multiple stops. I have gone back to flying AA out of DFW because SWA is often a s-show nowadays. My sister had a flight back from MSY today, which was cancelled, but she did not even learn about that until she tried to check-in last night—no email, text, notice or anything else, which is inexcusable. She tried calling but could only get a busy signal. Complete debacle by SWA.

Big Southwest guy as well. 3+ years having the companion pass.

Their scheduling system is antiquated and prices HAVE gone up. I def take other airlines now.

But skis fly free :) and a boot bag is a 3rd bag you’re allowed for free.

Huge SWA flyer, though I have avoided flying over holidays as much as possible. May be driving to Philadelphia on business in a couple weeks then down to Florida if this crap continues.
