So thank you for everyone who replied to my tournament question. I ended up doing a straight $100 Tourney. 12 players. 3rd place got their money back. Grinded out a 2nd place finish.

In discussions with the players, they want a big cash game. They were super excited for a 1/2 NL Hold'Em cash game. Minimum $100 buy in. Max $300 buy in.

This is my first time hosting a NL cash game.

Going to have it catered from a local chef that is fantastic (the country club that I'm a member of, though don't play a whole lot).

Aiming for 6-8 players.

3 wks from now.

Any thoughts?

Make sure your dealer is good at keeping the game moving along as some people get pretty social and distracted. Agreed with above on making sure they know how to handle situations like bad turn cards, flipped dealt card, quick to split pots and calculate side pots, etc.

Straddles can spice up a game, but depending on the crowd it's either a big bonus or a negative. We have unlimited straddles at our cash game but no button straddle to start. Can only be initiated by the UTG player then from there on.

I generally have 2 or more setups of cards in case one needs to be replaced due to a bad card and even flip between jumbo and standard index.

Most of our games generally run it once, but establish early on if you allow for more.

If everyone is super excited for a 1/2 game do you think they are looking to play deep stacked with multiple buy ins each? With straddles active, even 100 can go fast in a splashy game. If the game plays bigger than a general 1/2 maybe consider allowing the max buying to be half the big stack or more. This does have the potential of making the game run big, but if that's what the group wants it will be seen as a positive. If they are uncomfortable with buying for 1k or more it may be a big negative.

Make sure you have enough chips :) I tend to have more than needed but one time we were down to 3 barrels of 100s left in the full set up I brought with me
1 rack 1
4 racks 5
2 racks 25
1 rack 100

As has been noted in other game threads, huge stacks with lots of 5s can encourage more action so maybe expand that to 6 or 8 racks of 5s. This is easier to do when there is a dedicated dealer too.

If your group is willing to gamble it up a little bit maybe add bomb pots :)

I don't get to play much 7 card stud. Tried to introduce it to my group once and they said it took too long probably also because we had to keep explaining it. Safe to say it's not much slower than a PLO hand once the group gets used to it?

Is it self dealt?

Be careful offering breaks in the game if it’s cash, it will quickly break up and end if people are out smoking cigs socializing, easy exit strategy.

During our cash games no table breaks for the entire table. 1-3 people want to go do something, they can get up, but keep the game going.

No smokers in the group, and the pace of the cash games in the past have been really good.

Surprisingly, 7 card stud is the most popular game of the 3 amongst the group (I prefer Omaha).

I prefer 7 stud 8 or Better, or if you have 6 players super stud (4 cards down, discard 2, or pinapple stud 3 down discard 1)

Depending on the crowd, typically new players or seasoned players play slow if you try to play it PLO, but it should be played limit.

it should be played limit.
Or 1-5 spread limit like the mirage game in the early 00s :)

The table was full of all types of seniors. The characters I remember most were a lady all glammed up with jewelry including lots of rings with big stones, and a cowboy. Really wish I sat for that but it was when I was hard core into hold'em :(

The Dealer should know how to handle a premature turn card.

How will you handle requests for straddles? How many setups do you have?
Will you let it run twice?

Might consider lowering the min to 60.
Allowing a buy-on of 30 big blinds is just begging for people to gamble instead of play poker.

We do this as well. How do you handle players that get up to go make a drink, smoke outside, use the bathroom, etc?
Do you blind them out? We take their blinds. But if you take their blinds, shouldn’t you also deal them in, just in case they walk back inside in time to call the action.
how does your game handle this?

In my game we deal in absent players and fold their hands when it's on them and they're still not at the table.
Yeah I think we should be more consistent about this at my game. You’re always dealt in, and if absent immediately folded. We do give leniency if someone went to take a pee and will be back soon, but not if you go outside for undetermined amount of time
