Hi PCF - I've loved playing poker for years but I'm new to the forum and new to the chip hobby. I'm starting to host tournaments more regularly which was probably the catalyst for me starting down this rabbit hole and I'm having a whole lot of fun learning from all of you.

I've done some digging around the forum and have found lots of great threads around different tournament structures, starting stacks and chip sets. Most of what I've read has been related to tournaments with 1 or 2 tables - what changes would you make for a tournament with 3 tables? what if it grew to 4 tables?

I'm a fan of:
  • t100 structure - it seems most casinos have moved their daily tournaments to this format so I don't mind using home games to practice in a familiar structure
  • medium size starting stacks - in my opinion, 10k-15k starting stack promotes a little extra splashy or reckless play. I personally love deepstacks but most players don't want to commit an entire Saturday to playing, so we usually play for 4-5 hours in the evenings. 20k-25k seems to be a nice compromise
  • rebuy option until "2nd break" - we've done unlimited rebuys and having a limit of 2-4. both work for me
  • decent number of chips in starting stacks - just because it's fun. I understand this = more $ for me in building out the chip set but it's fun to have some chips on the table. to keep things simple for rebuys, we typically just give 1-3 larger denomination chips and let others from the table make change for them
  • 20 minute levels seem to work well. this seems to keep levels moving but also allows some buffer since we self shuffling/dealing. some players take more time than others and if people are drinking or extra conversational then the 15 minute levels seem to blow by too fast
Excited to hear any feedback or experiences from you all on what breakdowns might work best for starting stacks and total chip set.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Brandon

What I’d do in my unprofessional opinion on this: I like 10/8/10/2 for a 25k stack but let’s say 15/7/15/1 since you want a lot of chips in play. Also we’ll color up and rebuy using only 5k chips. For 40 players you’d need 600/280/600/40 to start. Coloring up the 100/500 will need another 40 5ks. Then 5 more 5ks for every rebuy so let’s make it an even 200 which would allow for 24 rebuys. Anything more than that and you can introduce your 25k chip. Otherwise save the 25ks for the final table. Your final table will have “TV poker stacks” with 700-800 chips on the table. As you lose players you can clear a bunch of the 1ks and turn into 25k or color them up completely. Final chips needed would be about 600/280/600/200/40.

this is awesome. thank you so much for the attention to detail and making suggestions that include so many points from my original post!

We do 20,000 T100 stack with 10/8/10/1.
20 minute levels for first six levels and 10 minute levels for last 6 levels.
Rebuys and color up with T5000 chips.
Our single table will play three of these every poker night (10 hours or so).

We used to do 15 minute levels but like you said, some players are little more social and pokey with dealing/acting and each level would fly by.
I like the split level times as it gives a solid first two hours of deeper stack play and then finishes up quickly before starting the next game. And a lot of the times the final 2 or 3 players will chop so we can start the next game.
