Hi Everyone

recently been looking on Apache, specifically looking at the majestic star set

To me, they look really worn and heavily used and I don't know whether to pick these up or buy a better-conditioned set of other Paulson's.

Although they do seem great value for Paulson chips I just don't know if they would play well considering the condition

So I am just wondering what your guy's opinions on them are through experience or if you have bought a set already?

Many thanks. :)

I have a set of $100's and up. They are far from mint, but that means they are an absolute pleasure to shuffle and handle. I sold a mint Paulson set after buying these cause while mint is better to look at, broken in is much better to play with.

They are definitely more worn out and also dirty compared to a lot of past TCR Sales.

Also, you had to cherry pick a lot to get matching height barrel in all denominations

The good thing is they are really cheap and make a very good budget set but you need to put a lot of extra work

Here are the example of some of the dirty chips before and after cleaning

This is the set that I cherry pick among the lot. Took a lot more work but it really cheap ($200+ ) for a legit Paulson set that cost less than China Clay set

They really brightened up after a clean didn't they!

It’s not about the cleaning to me - sure, anything can be cleaned and look nice. But that level of wear just makes the chips handle like crap. And the chips are WORN.

I’d also want to know about leaded vs unleaded. I didn’t follow these chips too closely but my understanding is that some of them are older leaded chips and some of them are the newer, unleaded clay. I don’t know which is which and I suspect you’d be getting a mix, so maybe it doesn’t even matter. But my opinion is that unleaded RHC chips with that level of wear are practically garbage. I’d rather new ceramics for the same price. They don’t even feel like clay chips. I’m serious about that - they just feel plasticky. I haven’t handled heavily worn leaded RHC chips, so maybe they feel better - I don’t know.

But long story short, I wouldn’t buy those chips for any price. And I think you’ll be disappointed if you do. I understand that shipping is expensive. But I would caution you from buying those chips without handling a sample stack OF THOSE SPECIFIC WORN CHIPS.

Really appreciate this advice upNdown, and yeah that very photo makes me think twice about going near them. :wow:

I bought the Majestic Star Set from Apache unfortunately before I found this great place here.

Since then, I bought a lot of chips from used to mint.

I really regret buying this set because the 5s and the 25s in particular are absolutely worn, rounded, and extremely thin and smooth.
My only bright spot is the 25 100s, which are also used but not as much as the rest and are just super nice bear claws. Especially with the hot pink spots.

See the height difference with a used Jack 5s Barrel, which I also bought for just 1$/Chip.

The 100s are intensively cleaned with U/S and Magic eraser.

Oh it look like the Apache batch are a lot worse than I expected, they look worse than what I get from TCR sales.

I will not recommend buying those.

Cherry picking is a must which Might be too late now.

Here is a comparison of how much of the differences (from NM to Worn)

You want to get them in the condition in the 3rd column and reject those on the right

There are also some very Good condition but I only found a couple barrels among the lot

Think I'll just purchase a really nice set with the sharper edges whether it means saving up a bit longer after seeing this comparison.
Really helpful, thank you. :D

You are welcome

Yup, they look worse from what I gotten from TCR sales

I thought they are the same batch initially, I will not recommend buying in those condition

Sorry for giving a Mis-leading impressions at the start

I bought a set of Majestic Star from TCR sale, so I was lucky to pay very low price.
I'm quite fond of it ... I played at Majestic Star back in 2015 when I visited Chicago, spent there a few nice hours and won a few bucks.
Maybe this is the only opportunity for me to buy a set from a casino where I actually played.

I'm using it for my home blackjack game.

I bought a lot of 5s and kept mainly pink-label and Bacc Room chips, selling more than a rack of very very worn white-label and GO 5s
Other denominations are in better shape, the best are 1K and 500s

This is a low-profile set but, at the original TCR price, it was a must-buy. Besides, TCR filled racks with 21-22 chip a barrel for 5s and 25s so we got a nice "gift"
At Apache price, plus shipping VAT and customs, it won't be cheap.

Ultimately, there are those here that don't have a problem with well-worn chips, especially if the price was low enough.
Then, there are those here that wouldn't go anywhere near them.

Only you can decide which group you're in, and sadly that means handling them yourself. You might end up with the opinion, "Hey! these are just fine!" or, "Wow, they were right, I don't like the feel..."

It's impossible to know without trying them.

These are great chips for the value. I would take these over any china clay without a thought. They are well used, so they are unlikely to gain any value and will take slightly to resell. You won't have any second thoughts about putting them into play among people that could care less about the chips that you might with a more expensive set.

Handling is completely subjective. Mint chips don't shuffle. These will shuffle easily. Both stack fine. Because there are multiple versions of the $5s there will be some variation in stack size, just like the players at my game stack their chips in whatever height looks good to them and drive me nuts. Up to you to decide if you're in the mint only crowd, or if used chips are fine by you as well.

bear-claw, leaded 100s .... are the real star
I have a full rack of them, I really don't need all of them for my game, maybe half would be OK but ... they are so pretty!!

Absolutely agree! I love the metal flakes, too.

Definitely would not say mint only, i’d be happy with a bit of wear on a set of Paulson's given the right price and how severe the wear was, but after some advice from people here it looks like these are just too worn for them to be worthy of a purchase I would be satisfied with, I quite liked the look and wear on the HSI on apache but unfortunately they sold. I'll just hold out for now.

I agree

These will shuffle easily.
I disagree. I can’t shuffle bike tires very easily. I’ll admit I’m not the world’s greatest chip shuffler. But in my experience, there’s a curve - yeah, mint chips are harder to shuffle, then they get easier with wear, but then when they approach bike tires levels of wear, they get harder to shuffle.

It’s a mix: see this 3 barrels:

Most of the BACC $5 are in the better condition and not worn condition plus they had the 12 zodiacs animals

Being Chinese I have collected 2 rack of BACC $5 for the set (only pic I can find are these pre-cleaned chips)

And the Star of the set is no doubt the $100
