Hey everyone, I was hoping for some feedback on an idea I had. - I was looking for a Twitter account that posts pictures of poker chips, because I thought it would be cool to see pictures of chips I've never seen before in my feed. I searched, but couldn't find one (if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know). I had the idea that I could create one myself. I figured the best place to find such pictures would be on this site, which leads me to my question...

Is it in bad taste, and / or a violation of the rules of this site, to grab screenshots of some of the images users have posted on this here, and post them on a Twitter account dedicated to poker chip enthusiasm?

I just read through the FAQ and community guidelines and didn't see anything about it mentioned, but I'm also interested if people would be annoyed seeing a picture they had posted here, turn up on Twitter. I personally would think it was cool, but I understand everyone may not feel the same way.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As long as you get the originator's permission, it should be fine. Re-posting a photo that someone else has taken, without their permission, is theft.
Not after it was posted to a very public forum, that is not theft? Long as you aren't claiming you took it.

Just because something is posted on the internet, it doesn't mean you automatically give the whole world free use to what you've posted.
As long as you aren't profiting off it or claiming that you took it, it does give permissions on many forums.

Its good practice to ask permission to use or share something, absolutely. But its not theft to download and share an image thats been posted on a public forum. I'm at work and not going to look at terms & services, I would be surprised if this isnt mentioned.

Edit: as always, can certainly be wrong but have worked in fair use.

I don’t take very good photos, but hypothetically I wouldn’t mind as long as I was asked first

I appreciate your enthusiasm, Darson isn't voicing his un-vetted opinion. He is conveying things we've already had discussions on, it may well also be his opinion.

We have had lawyers chime in, and large discussion including Photographers (professional) and drama from other sites where someone has used others photos.

You need to 1) get permission and 2) cite your source.

Welcome to the forums!

I think there is a BRPoker twitter or instagram, and a few others, but they are few and far between.

P.S. most of us would love that you're showing off our toys. =)
P.S.S thanks for asking/posting!

Am a career photographer and agree.

And I have dealt with situations rather similar to this.

“1) get permission and 2) cite your source.” is the correct course of action.

Posting images you found on the internet for the purpose of discussion or comments sure seems to fall under ‘fair use’ from my research. I think you’re good and if anyone has the extra time and money to take you to court…good for them. :)

I'd rather just stroll around on here for chip pics then Twitter.... Problem solved.

But yeah. No. Not unless they said it was kosher.

Most sites own any content you post on them. Read your terms of service. Some sites take ownership of anything you do on the site or the contents of any devices connected to their site.

If that is true for most sites, then you should have no trouble citing a single example. You wouldn't be the first to confuse a republishing clause with a transfer of ownership!

Site TOS’s usually state something to the effect of posting the photo conveys an agreement that the poster provides the site (and it’s owners and subsidiaries) irrevocable perpetual usage rights, but I have never seen one that conveys a transfer of copyright. I think there is come conflation that often happens in regards to usage, publishing, copyright, ownership, etc.

Interesting stuff. Thanks everyone for the responses. Sound like a pretty split opinion. While I don't think it's a legal issue, especially since I wouldn't be using them for any kind of profit or claiming them to be my own...it sounds like enough people would object to it that it wouldn't be cool to do. And reaching out to each picture's owner to get permission individually would take this project from "a lot of work to maintain, but worth it", to "way too much to deal with". Oh well. Thanks again for the feedback on this one.
