Maybe rebuys, but there probably won't be any because new player. $20 Buy in. Likely no more than 8 players. Maybe somewhere around 3 hours.

Chips to work with:

200 x $0.25
200 x $1
400 x $5
300 x $25
100 x $100
19 x $500
20 x $1000

It would be easy to use the chips I have the most and do T1 tournament, but I figure I would like to use the 1k plaques. A T5 with 3,000 starting (300BB) would break down somewhere around 15/17/5/2/1. Been trying to find structure with PokerSoup website. Seems kind of weird chip ratio and structure with T5. Maybe make the early levels longer increments than the later levels?

How would you approach it?

200BB

You have plenty of chips for t5 base with no rebuys. Structure for 3 hours probably works best by keeping it quick, 15 minute levels? 10/20, 20/40, 30/60, 40/80, 50/100, remove 5s. 75/150, 100/200, 150/300, 200/400, 250/500, remove 25s. Drop down to 10 minutes the rest of the way 300/600, 400/800, 500/1000, 600/1200, 800/1600, 1000/2000. That would total 3.5 hours but you likely won’t get that far with 24,000 total chips in play.

Did a 7-handed $20 T5 - 2000 stacks this past weekend with some complete newbs. Worked like a charm. This is what I did.
10/10/7/2 opening stacks. Maybe 2 instances of change making, despite all the limping.
Used a 500 to chip up the 5s. Used 2 x 1000 to take off the 25s. (If you start with 8 players you'll likely need a third to cover the round ups, unless you race.)
Used 2x 1000s for the single re-buy.

This was our blinds structure. I told my players we'd take 3-4 hours and we finished at round 9, but over the three hour mark because we started late and had the breaks which aren't accounted for in the table.

I was initially worried that it would take more than the blind level 20 minutes to complete an orbit but that wasn't a problem. We seemed to manage a good pace.

Good luck!

I feel like I don't have enough $100s and $500s in levels 8? There should be less players at this stage? So 100 chips divided by like 5 players? And would throwing in one 1k plaque for starting stack complicate things? Probably make it a slightly longer game with 300BB starting stack?

You'll have plenty of $100s and $500s per person by the time you get to the later levels. In the game at the weekend I think we had 5 make the second break. I think around the end of level 8 was were we got down to the final 2. Don't forget a min-raise in level 8 is going to be $600 and a classic 3x open is pretty much a plaque. You're going to be trading the $100s in levels 4, 5 & 6.

300 BB starting stack would make the game run longer. You'd have a total of $24,000 on the table and always expect the final blinds at 5% of that - so final BB will be around $1200 or level 11. I still think you'll be fine for the number of $100 & $500 chips.

Wouldn't level 5 be more fair at 50/100 blinds?
And level 6 75/150 blinds?

The BB progression at 50, 75, 125 is deliberately 50-70% extra than the level before so I’d advocate keeping that. A 100% change in BB is a big jump that is best avoided, but common at the beginning.

I could round down to lower SBs rather than up - so 25/75, 50/125. I just realized I did that later at 100/300 and 200/500 so I’m sulking at my inconsistency :wow::)

Overall I think I prefer the SB to keep ticking up, but I also don’t think it makes too much difference at a third of a BB. Try it?

The reason I don't like the higher small blind is that there's not reason to fold in small blind with there being no really difference between big blind.

Maybe don't color up the 5s yet and make level 5 30/60.

This is similar. Maybe take out the 5s after level 6? But would add 100/200 level (2 hour mark) between 8 and 9.

That’s a good good reason to size down the SB. I think I’ll try that next time. If I wasn't removing the 5s 40/80 would be my preferred at that level. For my tournaments I prefer to keep the breaks at the hour and run the chip up at that point. Might be a bit tail wagging the dog but I think it’s better for the players.

Small jumps would seem/appear friendly to new player. Maybe one color up is enough.

Sizing down would give the small blind a slight advantage and big blind a slight less incentive. It's a small difference, but trying to make it fair and the updated structure seems okay.

@Kentucky I've update what I think will go with in the original post. What you think?
For a 200BB/2000 stack with 8 players you’ll have a total bank of 16,000. 5% of that is 800, so I’d plan for your blinds to get up at least that high for around when you want to end, and plan for higher in case you need them. I don’t think 450 will drive your tournament to a conclusion.

I think you need to increase the gap between the later levels - try to go up at a constant rate, rather than a constant amount. Like add half a BB on every time.

Maybe keeping the lower denoms on the table is a preference thing. Give your game more of a cash feel. Those guys dig lots of chips :)

Any preference on rounding up or horse racing?
I used to prefer a race off because I felt it was more proper somehow as it didn't add chips to the table. But now I prefer rounding because it's quicker to do, easier for others to understand, and I can join everyone at the snack table sooner.  When you think about it, the most you are giving players is less than a small blind - by definition the SB must be at least your next biggest chip - so it really doesn't affect the game.

Maybe rebuys, but there probably won't be any because new player. $20 Buy in. Likely no more than 8 players. Maybe somewhere around 3 hours.

Chips to work with:

200 x $0.25
200 x $1
400 x $5
300 x $25
100 x $100
19 x $500
20 x $1000
T5 2k stack $5/$25/$100/$500 10/10/7/2 are the best with your chips and player

Use the extra 30 $100 to colour up your $5 & $25 and use $1k for your rebuyin

I will do 15 min level if you targeting for 3 hour+ tourney

Tournament ran fine. Only thing I'll change is starting stacking numbers. There were a few exchanges more than I liked with 5s. I could color up earlier, but blinds would be not fair. I'll probably do 15/9/7/2.
