Greetings! Could you please tell me the best set of poker chips to get for my home tournaments? Thanks!

Just kidding. I used to run home tournaments for my friends when I was much younger and cooler, before life happened. I became obsessed poker when I bought a poker book because I wanted to be the best poker player of all my friends AND I wanted them all to know it; and that’s how it started.

I joined Poker School Online, went to the WPO in Tunica, and won a couple of underground mid-range buy in tournaments. This is just before/as the poker boom started. And that’s where I peaked. I basically had a poker fund that funded all my poker activities, which I guess is actually pretty good now that I think about it; however I’m nowhere near as good a poker player as I thought I was. And then came the kids and the rotating work shifts 24/7/365, and fishing and grilling and bbq ing, and poker just wasn’t that high on the priority list anymore; just a few tourneys once a year on our annual September guys houseboat trip on the Mississippi River.

This year my 14 year old son attended the houseboat trip for the first time and participated in his first poker tournament and I dare say I’ve created a monster. To be absolutely clear, I feel like the luckiest guy alive because my son is crazy about fishing, very interested in grilling and now asks to play poker with me every time I see him. He is obsessed with many of the things that obsess me and he enjoys doing these activities with ME. What could be better?

Two days ago my boy and I played heads up poker for 8 hours while watching Rounders and Molly’s game, and I though “wouldn’t it be nice to play with some premium chips?” And that‘s how it started. I did what every person does before they need to learn how to perform brain surgery (and go down the rabbit hole) - I went to YouTube.

You know it’s funny, 24 hours ago I thought I knew how to run a home poker game, I thought I knew how to shuffle cards AND I thought Bicycle were premier playing cards. I have to tell you that I’m not built to be patient. I want to have my new poker chip set for Saturday night, I don’t have any time time to wait on samples. For this poker chip set. I strongly suspect that the Tiki King set I bought sight unseen and without sampling or testing is only the beginning… I may be a bit more judicious with my next poker set.

Welcome and good luck. So much great info here, and many, many helpful members. If you really do have questions (not sure from your post) just toss them out and you will get tons of suggestions. There are awesome chips for sale here every day, especially if your budget is not too limited.

Hi and welcome !

Because a heads up set is tiny (100 chips are enough), it's an interesting way to experience premium chips.

A good breakdown for heads up set is :
25 x 40
100 x 40
500 x 20

It can even squeeze 5 players.

Thanks everyone!

The first line was an attempt at satire; I literally spent all of last night until dawn watching YouTube videos on poker chips, mostly from Hobbyphillic and Christopher M, so in a 24 hr span I learned just enough to be dangerous.

Also I’m not looking for a heads up set, but when it’s just me and the boy we play heads up.

I ordered enough Tikis for a full 3 table tournament which ought to be more than enough, not sure I could even field a 2 table tourney these days. I’m viewing this as my starter set and am very comfortable knowing they are a proven crowd pleaser.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that the poker obsession appears to be back, all it took was a little nudge from the boy.

Thanks! I’ve decided to proceed with great caution… My original goal, as I’m sure many of you can relate, was simply to upgrade from the dice poker chips. I have done that, with two complete ceramic tourney sets (tiki king & Nevada Jack) along with a Nevada Jack cash set. At this point I should probably forget this forum exists. I probably won’t. But I should. Great caution…

I was also a PSO member and played in a couple of Chicago area live tourneys with others. Was your handle TriTaylor?

I played a tourney at Blue Chip Casino and we had 4 PSOers at the final table.

I remember muzzies, 2hotts and a dude with long hair

I am in the Minneapolis area, so I am most familiar with players from here including rowebote, bounder, thehazyone, themills, and friends that I met at PSO conventions, including zeroth, oildoe, rggator, debonair, wildbill and zipman. My PSO handle was Idoru99.

Jay and Jenn Muzzy are both great players, and I think Jenn's game was underappreciated. I am not sure who was stronger player. I played with them and sailormoe and an excellent player named "Dave" (can't remember his PSO handle right now) at a tournament at the Muzzy's sometime in late 200x's. Great times!

Not sure if you ever made it to a convention, but they were also fantastic. I sure miss those days.

“they call me the sailor because I like to ride the waves”

Yup I knew him and wildbill

I went to tunica one year for the convention, lent PokerMats some $$$ to play at the NL tables… after he win his seat in the ME from bugsys I bought a 5% share and he went to the final table “DAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!”
Think that was the year Greg Raymer won

From MC or just the region?

I wasn't the dude with long hair.
The one in MC

I was short stacked the entire tournament and managed it to the final table, woke up to an ace so I pushed all in and 2hott woke up to a better all in than mines and sent me to the rail
