Hi,

I've been reading this forum for a while, but never posted before.

As the title suggests, I'm hosting my first tournament this weekend and thought it would be good to sense-check my structure with people who've got more experience.

Details: 7 people, Texas Hold'em. Experience of players is low-average. I'm aiming for the game will be no longer than 3 hours.

Starting stack: 100
T10 / T20 / T50 (I've got higher denomination, but stack is limited)
30 / 20 / 10

Blinds increasing every 20 minutes:
10 / 20
20 / 30
30 / 40
40 / 60
60 / 80
80 / 100
100 / 150
150 / 200
200 / 300
300 / 500

Re-buy: in first hour only. No add-ons.

Payout: 50%, 30%, 20%

How does this look to a more experienced eye? Anything obviously wrong?

(expectations will be pretty low. As I say, this is an amateur game. But trying to avoid a crapshoot)

Your small to big blind ratios are out of whack. Try this:
Get rid of the T20 chips. Not needed. I think your starting stack is wrong, Your start stack must be higher than 100. Could you verify?

10 / 20
20 / 30
20 / 40
30 / 60
40 / 80
50 / 100
80 / 150
100 / 200
130 / 250 or 150 / 250 depending on what chips you still have in play.
150 / 300
200 / 400
250 / 500

Thanks Buzz,

Sorry, 100 was a typo, starting stack is 1000 (30x T10, 20x T20, 10x T50)

If I get rid of the T20s, would you recommend swapping them for out for lower or higher denomination, i.e. T10s or T50s? I've also got T100s I could use - but only 20 of them (as I say, my stack is limited)

Typically you want jumps of approximately 4-5x value from one denomination to another. That gets a bit tricky with a base start of T10. Based on that your progression would be T10, T50, T250, T1000. A T250 denom is not very common (although some members here have made customs in that denom I believe). A better exercise may be if you list out what chips and in what quantities you have.

Sure, that makes sense. I'm currently working with –

210 x T10
90 x T20
70 x T50
20 x T100
20 x T1000

I think long term you may want to consider a new set with a better breakdown of denominations. There are numerous threads on the board with a ton of great info if and when you want to go that route.

For what you have now you'd ideally like a breakdown that gives you at least 100 big blinds to start, so 2000 chips at the beginning. But I don't think you can really swing that with what you have. A way to sort of cheat around it would be to add a 10/10 level at the very beginning and still start with 1000 chips.
