Good day to you all!

I've recently started playing poker with my friends weekly and I would like to buy my own set and mat to maybe host some poker nights. I've been doing some research, and I've been struggling a little. After watching some of Hobbyphilic's and Christopher M's videos, I decided to check this forum out and ask for advice from the experts.

We are usually 5-8 people, it's usually low stakes games and I'm looking for something under $100 that's better than your usual "dice set".

All advice is welcome and greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Are you playing a cash game or tournament?
How "low" are the actual stakes? To some low is $10 to some low is $100.
What games do you play? No Limit Holdem only or various games?

Your best bet may be getting in on one of the card molds group buy. Can get some pretty awesome ships for somewhere between 30-37 cents per chip.

For a playable set of chips under $100, I would just tell you to follow hobbyphillic’s advice. He pays a lot more attention to budget chips than most of us.

We usually play cash games, but I want to be able to play tournaments eventually too. By low stakes, I'm talking $10 buy-in low. Lastly, we always play No Limit Holdem

Do you recommend any?

Welcome to PCF!

The tournament/cash question is the first question you need to answer. You can easily run a tournament for 8-10 players with 300 chips or so. If cash, I’d suggest at least 400 chips, but 600 would “future proof” your set.

Figure out what kind of game you’ll be playing, and if cash, what stakes, then we can recommend a good breakdown.

As far as chips in your budget, my favorites are the Monaco Casino from discountpokershop.com. The Outlaw chips from there also seem to be the same material, and are fairly well liked for the price, considering we’re a bunch of chip snobs. At any rate, they’re inexpensive, and will get you by while you come to the realization that you can’t live without 5000 leaded THC’s with shaped inlays. :D

I suggest not getting chips yet. just keep putting moneya way until you can afford a better set. otherwise you will spend money, not be satisfied and just spend more money.

That is the way around here.

I don’t remember what thread I snagged the chip counter from but I had it saved on my phone for several months now. This is a great tool I used for my cash set. As far as chips go for under $100, Apache poker has a few that might be worth checking out. I know as for China clays, the royals are pretty sweet but a little pricey for the budget you said. Good luck man and welcome!!

If you're playing a cash game with $10 buy-ins, then I'd recommend playing 5¢/10¢ blinds. Very few stock sets have nickels available. The only ones I can think of are Majestics and Pharaohs, and they're around 50¢/chip. If you must stay under $100 budget, you could get $5/$25/$100/$500, and divide the value by 100, so $5=5¢, $25=25¢, $100=$1, etc

If you could expand your budget and wait a while, get in on one of the Cards Mold ceramic group buys. There are some designs ready to go that could be semi-customized, or grab a set like the Arias. They'll run you ~40¢/chip, but you'll have a much better chip (not heavy, not slippery, great colors, etc), and get them personalized, I.E., Carlos's Poker Room or whatever you like. I had these made for my brother-in-law. He loves them! I would highly recommend them!

Thank you for the advice! Very helpful! I love the custom chips too, I'll definitely consider expanding my budget

If I needed a micro cash set for under 100 I'd probably do these.

https://www.thepokerstore.com/colle...0-monte-carlo-smooth-14-gram-poker-chips-bulk

Something like:

100 x $0.05
200 x $0.25
80 x $1
20 x $5

Maybe even start with the 300 set for $69.
Thank you! Have you bought from thepokerstore.com before?

I did a few years ago. No complaints. Super quick shipping, and they were very responsive to emails, too.

My first “real” set came from side pot poker. Now some will tell you the quality has gone down in recent years but I still like them. I’ve added to my “OG” set with the “lesser” chips and I don’t really see much of difference. They still run around.30-ish cents each but they look good and my players have always liked them.
