Soooo after joining this forum many years ago to research a new set of customs, I’m finally getting around to doing it. Being I already own an old ASM custom set I’ve decided on ceramics and from what I gather this is the current best choice.

I ordered a blank and Dia de la Muertos sample sets and I think I’m going with 43mm. (Not arrived yet) My Father is a graphic designer and is working on the art now.

My questions are - are their stock designs the same as what their customs would look and feel like? Are the edges matte or glossy….is there a choice? Do the Apache racks work with any standard birdcage? I can’t seem to determine that via for sure via the thread here.

Any other recommendations with this company and ordering?

EDIT: Yes, all their chips are smooth except for one line of chips which is textured.

Yes, Apache/Matsui racks will fit in their birdcages.

Just in case you are not aware, edge spot alignment can be requested for an additional $.20/chip.

Yes, I believe all their chips are textured except for one line of chips which is smooth (Nevada Jacks?). You have to ask for the smooth blanks.
It's the exact opposite, all their chips are smooth except for one line which is textured, only available in 39mm, and only by request.

Ok thanks. I did get a response and they said they don’t have a cage for oversized chips but I assume they mean with traditional racks. I have an extra bird cage I would like to be able to use if possible.

I just got my sample set. WOW, they are nice chips. The texture is perfect. The only thing I wish was that they had matte edges. I wonder if a light rub with 0000 steel wool would take the sheen off? Anyone ever try that?

It may damage the color. I'm not sure how deep the color goes into the chip. However, I would say that the gloss may grow on you when you're playing with them and see them in stacks from different angles.

The rolling edge is a plastic wrap, creating the shine. I doubt that roughing it up would help, but you do have samples...

While you may be able to get rid of the shine on the edges, you won’t be able to get them to feel like the texture on the faces. Here’s a 60x microscopic photo of DDLMs:

That’s a closeup of the skull’s teeth on this chip:

The tiny little pebbles that make up the surface of the chip are what give it the great feel.

Have you tried emailing Gene and Kristil about this? I seriously doubt you are the only person who would have even asked them about this. Just use the contact form on the brpropoker website. They respond in less than 24 hours.

I just asked if the edges were shiny and they said yes. Didn’t think there was another option

Shiny rolling edges on ceramic chips are a result of the mold design used for the blanks.

Yes, I understand that, I just wondered if they had a different blank as an option. I came across a pic online of a ceramic chip with edges finished matte like the faces. Not sure who made them but it doesn’t currently seem to be an option with any vendor as far as I know

Game-On Chip Company (recently moved, nearly impossible to contact) and Palm Gaming (closed, assets sold to ABC) both had ceramic blanks with matte-finish edges, but neither is really an option today.

The Chinese/Alibaba companies are producing 39mm blanks with matte-finish edges, however (the same places making the cards mold group buy chips).

Sun-Fly rolling edges are glossy, but they will make a custom mold with matte-finish edges (~$4k). ABC/BRPro has three 39mm blanks (Chipco, Nevada Jacks, and standard), but I think all have glossy or semi-glossy edges (inquire to make sure).

I thought they'd closed up shop like everyone else the old-timers talk about.

I've got a sample of GOCC ceramics and they're really quite nice. Matte rolling edges, satin texture. As nice as ABCs are I'd probably choose GOCC over them based on my limited samples so far.

but neither is really an option today.

If the ABC Chipcos are made to the same specs as the old Chipo Protechs then I would call them semi-gloss based on the ones I have - but mine are heavily casino-used, so they might have started out much glossier. :)

Either way, it seems the ABC Chipcos aren't available to common folk like us any more, unless things have changed once again since two years ago: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/abc-secret-menu-blanks-no-longer-available.45607/

So if Chipco blanks are available is the consensus that’s the way to go? I would be a bit worried about adding on in the future and the possible unavailability of those blanks. I think @sir bluffs alot has ABC Chipco chips. Maybe I can get him to let me sample them.
That said I’m pretty happy and impressed with the Dia Muertos samples I received. The glossy edges aren’t my top preference but not a deal killer.

Pretty sure ABC is able to source their Chipco blanks as needed (i.e. they've contracted with various suppliers to manufacture them according to their specifications) rather than drawing down a diminishing stock of leftovers from the original chipmaker. In that case, you should be able to add on as long as ABC is still in business - and while history is littered with the corpses of poker chip manufacturers, it's a reasonable bet that ABC will be up and running for the foreseeable future.

Order some Chipco samples from ABC, and while you're at it ask them about future availability. Gene will tell you straight. You'll have to email them, since you can't order Chipcos directly from their website (it's on "the secret menu").

So if Chipco blanks are available is the consensus that’s the way to go?

Absolutely not. The consensus is to get samples of anything you're considering buying and decide for yourself. Everyone's preferences are different.

Also, get samples of their Nevada Jacks so that you've got all three ABC blanks to compare.

One question I forgot to ask- do they make the Chipcos in 43mm? I’m pretty set on that size

I have no idea. I'm sure someone else does, though. And if you ask ABC they'll surely tell you. :)

I am not entirely sure, but if 43mm is a requirement, I think Sun-Fly has more options at that size than any other ceramic chip maker. Have you considered them?
