Hosting a farewell poker tournament for a long time regular who is moving away. Need help with the structure.

Here is the criteria:

1) Starting stack - number of chips, 40 give or take; no thoughts on total amount
2) Length 3 - 3.5 hours, so that we can move on to cash games.
3) Blinds - slow ramp, put the pedal to the metal about half way through, aka shove-fest. Maybe longer rounds early. Short ones after the midpoint.
4) Buy In - $40 to more people to play. Unlimited rebuys for the first hour. Cut off for registration at 1 hour.
5) Players - 12 signed up right now, expect 24-30

What do you have for me?

Some help for this part based on my previous thread (bolded ones may work for you depending on your chip breakdown):

Base/StackTotal ChipsBreakdown
T5/2k4015/13/11/1
T25/3k208/8/4
T25/10k4012/17/6/5
T25/15k6020/20/15/5
T25/20k4012/12/9/7xT2000
T25/30k39+rebuy/bounty chip12/12/5/6/4
T100/10k2010/2/8
T100/66k4010/10/10/10

Sounds like maybe 12/12/5/6/4 (39 chips, 30k starting stack) might work?

I wonder if we run a 30k stack turbo (1.5 hours Friday before we get to cash?

May I ask why? I mean as opposed to designing a tournament with the usual progression for 3.5 hours anyway?

Whoa boy, in 3.5 hours we are not going to be waiting for the middle to shove fest either.

So I am thinking 40 entries (a 30-50% re entry on 24-30 players) * T4k starting stack (16/16/4 of T25/100/500 if you can swing it, or 12/12/5) So we need to end at the 4k-8k level, and play about 12 levels.

So how about 18 minute levels
50-100 75-150 100-200 150-300
200-400 300-600 400-800 600-1200
1000-2000 1500-3000 2000-4000 3000-6000 4000-8000

Not exactly a slow start I admit (especially with a 40bb start), but you definitely will get to a shove fest after an hour.

Maybe this.

T10000 stack (12/12/5/6)

18m levels
50-100 75-150 100-200 150-300
72min +8m break, close buys.

200-400 400-800 800-1600 1500-3000

3000-6000
double all remaining levels.

Standard starting progression,. Levels start doubling after first break. Tournament should end on 12k-24k So still 11 levels plus breaks fits 3.5 hours.

Thanks. This might work.

I know the idea sucks, but the tournament is an excuse to get non poker players in the seats and then play cash the rest of the night when they get lubed up.

Cash is where it's at anyway. Just had to think about it. Accepting blind doubles after a flat start seems to accomplish the goals.

My first post was closer to what I would call a normal progression, that still fits the timeframe, but a very short starting stack.

The structure was perfect. We had 15 entries and 17 rebuys. It was a glorious shove fest.

So what I do is use a standard schedule but have 30 min levels for the first hour, 15 min for the second hour and 10 min or 5 min to the end. This allows everyone to stay playing for the first couple of hours and then ramp up so that the game finishes more rapidly when some people are knocked out and can’t rebuy.
