Hi all,
Would like to get your opinion. I’ll be hosting a tournament, up to 20 people. I’ll also expect a cash game to start during the tournament. I’m thinking about using 50/100 with a $50 chip in use as my starting blinds for a 15k stack. One reason is I don’t need as many chips. Also, I can use my $1/5/25 chips for the cash game and there’s no crossover.
The first few rounds would be:
50/100
100/200
150/300
200/400

I don’t get the option of having 25/50 or 75/150 but it hardly seems worth it to use $25’s to only get those extra two levels in.
Any thoughts!?

"50" levels would still require two 25 chips, right? Some people will use base 100 sets for this reason. and start with 100/200. If you did that though, you'd want people starting with more like 60 or 80k in my opinion.

If you're doing base 25 - most will have an initial progression like

25/50
25/75
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
250/500

or something similar, allowing you to have 25s on the table for the first 7 or 8 levels depending on how you structure it.

Generally you want blinds going up by about 30-50% with each level.

Many on here will suggest not to mix cash and tournament sets for security reasons, as someone can 'carry' a tournament 25 over to the cash game at some point potentially.

Most tournament sets have roughly the same number of chips per starting stack no matter what the base chip is, as long as they have a similar number of BB. You won't necessarily save a ton of chips between the various permutations.

If it helps separate your cash and tourney chips, then by all means create a base T100 tourney.

Sorry I should have clarified. I’ll have a $50 chip. I have a set of Milano’s and I can get a matching chip in $50. So I could still do all the blinds but 25/50 and 75/100. Also the $25 chips could be at the cash table because there would be none in use at the tournament tables.

You'd save a few chips doing this, but not many - a lot of my cash sets have $0.50 fracs for this same reason - two $0.25s, or a single $0.50.

That said, not mixing the chips you use in the cash game (25 and down) and tourney (50 and up) would be good for security.

Yeah it's mostly just to not mix chips. I'm just trying to determine if there is a major downside.

Just a little less flexibility in blind levels I think, and having to start at traditional "Level 2" or "Level 3". May need starting stacks a little deeper, or the early levels to run a little longer.

Sounds like you want the tourney to move at a brisk pace, given the cash game that follows. I would recommend 50/100 or maybe 100/100 to start and not use the 50's at all.

100-100
100-200
100-300
200-400
300-600
etc...

If you're expecting a full 20 players, maybe even 100-200 to start. 75bb might be a little thin though.

.50 or $50 and $10 chips are all useless. You usually want 4x or 5x progression in your chip line up. The $500 is a classic example in tourneys where it does not get much use. You can get away with like 5 or 7 per starting stack and it affects the game nada.

I think this is actually pretty novel approach to the "no-crossover" rule if the 25 chips are needed for cash.

My main tournament set is actually a "high roller" starting at T500, so you can absolutely make levels work with T50. Keep the big blinds the same and round off the small blind. The only downside is you can't do an intermediate 25-75 between 25-50 and 50-100, but other than that you can work something like this.

50-100
50-150
100-200
150-300

You can add an optional 50-50 level to the start as well.

The upside is, as with T500, you would not need to put out as many chips with a 2x jump. a 4/8/4/7 of T50/100/500/1000 becomes equivalent to the 8/8/4/7 of a T25/100/500/1000 setup.

.50 or $50 and $10 chips are all useless.
I wouldn't go so far to say as they are all "useless" but if in use, they require different thinking than a typical 4x-5x progression.

There are good reasons to have 0.50 chips for cash games. Namely quarters are a waste if the blinds are 0.50-1. I did 0.10-0.50-1-5 for my cash sets. I only put the dimes out for micro games, and we play 0.50-0.50 instead of 0.25-0.50, and then we can also play 0.50-1. Those are the only cash stakes I host frequently. Change-making with 0.50 chips is easier too, it's always swapping for a single one direction or the other.

The T50 can serve a similar use in a tournament.

$10 chips only make sense in high-dollar limit games though.
