Howdy Chippers,

I'm a brand new member and looking for some advice, mostly with regard to what its like being a member of the forum.

Are people gonna think I'm an idiot if I'm putting together a mismatched chip set? or is this common? Is it taboo to split up sets or ask someone if they will?
I guess I'm still a bit nervous about posting and asking questions, how friendly is this forum to the new comers?
Is there anything I need to be careful about when buying and shipping chips?
And lastly, whats the best way for Canadians to get chips from the US to Canada?

Thanks and may you're Friday be filled with flopped quads,

Neil

Welcome to the forum!
The membership here is extremely friendly, but parts of it can get extremely hostile (exploitative, to be precise) if you ever get stupid enough to post a "wanted" ad. :D
Asking questions and reading a lot (and seeing a lot of pics) is the only way to get a good understanding of the chipping world.
After having done a lot of homework, you narrow down to a few choices and get samples.:)

Hey Neil!

Welcome to the forum. Not uncommon at all to put together mixed set, hard to do well but there have been plenty of people who have made beautiful mixed sets. There's a couple of threads displaying them, like this one: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-official-unofficial-mixed-set-pr0n-thread-of-pcf.11227/

(there's others I just don't know the thread name lol)

Lots of people on this forum were very nice to me when I was new, so I feel like that's usually the agenda and paid forward.

Plenty of chippers in Canada with amazing sets, but a lot of US chippers will still ship to Canada no problem, just costs more on shipping.

Good luck!

Welcome! There’s a lot that can be said to your post and I’m sure a lot of people will help you out, but one thing I will say is about the getting chips to Canada from the US question. If you can swing it the absolute best way is to have a contact just on the southern side of the border Who can receive your chips and then come across to give them to you. I did it a few times for a guy in the Vancouver area. obviously with the border situation right now it’s not as feasible as before. Also it depends on knowing someone in the states and both of you living close enough to the border to make it work, but if you can do it that way it’s a sweet way to do it.

Welcome to the forum!

Lots of people put together “mixed sets” around here. People will debate forever which chips “go well” with others, but at the end of the day it’s all a preference, so long as the chips are distinguishable enough from each other.

I’d probably suggest trying to keep your set all the same material (plastic, clay, ceramic). That way the chips at least feel all the same.

That said, casinos don’t even always have similar material across their chips, so the world truly is your oyster.

420, eh? I like it. Welcome to PCF!

As far as building a set, I'd say do what you like. You will find there are LOTS of different opinions on what is acceptable when it comes to set construction, but it is all a matter of taste (which is subjective). However I think some universal advice would be:

1. Take your time, what you think you might like now will change as you explore the forum.

2. Get samples. Before making a large purchase it's important to see and feel the chips to ensure they suit your tastes. There is even a "sample set" thread on here where you can sign up to get a sample of different types of chips. All you have to do is pay for shipping and send them along to the next person when you are done with them.

I’m new too and so far everyone has been incredible. I would check out a very similar thread I made and the responses of @CrazyEddie

From my few days of research, my personal opinion is mixed sets are a purely preferential thing. My preference is to have a matching one, but hey, it’s your set. If you thought it through and are happy with it, I’m sure your guests won’t complain. You are your chips’ harshest critic, probably.

A few quick things to think about to help narrow your research. Cash or tournament chips? For how many people? What’s your budget? Then try to get samples.

Welcome! This is by far the most friendly and helpful internet community I’ve ever been a part of so I would certainly not be afraid to ask ”dumb” questions.

While it’s of course advisable to use caution when buying chips and sending strangers money, the site’s feedback system works incredibly well. I have made countless of transactions and never had a deal go south. I have made deals up to €3000 based solely on trust. I wouldn’t dream of sending anyone a 10th of that anywhere else.

Like everyone always says, get samples. The best advice you'll ever get (for buying chips). :)

Paulson mixed sets are fairly common. I wasn't always a big fan of mixed casino sets, but I like them now - I'm slowly working on one. The high denoms get pricy unless you label over more common chips. About 12 years ago, I had a crazy mixed set with racks of different types of BCC chips. It was really a grab bag of chips from totally mismatched sets, which I knew then, but I enjoyed the variety. So whatever you like, go with that - create your own style. Hobbies like this exist to make you happy (at least, until you see your bank statement).

It's often OK to split up sets. They usually sell a lot faster if the buyer is willing to split, so you can ask them if they will, can't hurt. Sometimes people have good reasons not to split one, but if a big set doesn't sell right away, the seller might decide after a few days to split it anyway. That's why you'll see posts like "Dibs on the $100s if split," but not all sales are "dibs" sales. Sellers usually post their terms of sale at the top of ads.

Whats up PNW fam! Aren't we supposed to abolish the US and Canada borders over here and start our own country? Then we'll have no problem getting chips from BC to Washington:) Thanks for the tips. Cheers.

These are great tips. Am realizing I'm not going to rush into anything, I can already see how easy it is to get swept up by all the possibilities lol

Def gonna check out these samples:) cheers

Glad to hear! Thanks for the advice.

You’re in good hands here on the PCF Neil! Welcome to the never ending journey of obsession. Good luck on your new journey of building some rad sets! (Btw, a lot of the joy is in the chase as well. There’s nothing like seeing the chips you want pop up on the classifieds and snatching them up! My advice...always be ready.)
