Inching closer to first CPC set: the making of Van Card Room - Opinions wanted! (2 Viewers)

Do not add a drop shadow to the number in #3, that makes zero sense and completely goes against the visual language of the rest of the chip.

Thank you all so much for all you input!
I just sent my thoughts to J5!

For now, I've been playing with the edge spots and colors.

Here are a few inspired by the AS HS tourney set:

Text of 4 on design of 3. I like the script of 4 the best but like the bigger bird on 3.

revision from J5!

Here he made the grass more like the flamingo logo, but had to move his leg to a slight upward angle.
He also did a variation where the bird is facing to the right with a dropshadow on the denomination.
I like that he removed the bird's "foot" on the second chip.

I asked if it would be possible to make the grass smaller to maintain the straight leg angle, but he said that it may be an issue due to the black border around the grass. It would be possible if the grass was a solid color, so I asked if I could see how it would look as solid black and solid green.

Would it be bonkers to have both orientations of the bird and logo on each side of the chip?

I feel like we are getting so close! Super exciting!

The black border on #1 and #2 will probably kill the inside color once it's printed. I like #4 a lot, great work!

agree with nixing the black border on the grass, and really like #3. i personally don't think the grass needs to be green, but it looks great both ways (#3 and #4). no foot.

#4 for me. I like the font for the value (vs the bold version in #2). I like the clean green grass.

That mold has a texture inlay, correct? That always adds an unknown factor, but it won’t be as crisp.

i like the idea of flipping the other side- so the name and bird are on the same half of the chip. Don’t know what that would look like in a splashed pot and it may throw folks off, though.

Haha I actually like the grass in 1 and 2. I am knee deep in designing my own inlays. I am paying particular attention because with shaped inlays you have even less space. I think the grass will actually print fine, so it would just be a question of look. Since the bird is outlined and the color of the grass isn’t necessary I think it makes sense to do the outlined grass and there is little risk of it not being terribly noticeable. And FWIW J5 knows what he is doing with CPC chips. I doubt he would design it if he didn’t think it would work. Btw love the design over all.

Left vs right facing would be a coin toss for me. My initial instinct is a preference for #2 though.

I usually don’t like different inlays on opposing sides of a chip but this would be a different . Might be a fun way to go.

Are you giving up on the original design direction or just playing around here?

I'm just playing around. I am so incredibly bad with making decisions like this. Once I get thinking about something this much I can't tell what I like anymore, or what even looks good haha.

I really need to start thinking about final colors though, as the spots on the birds will correspond to the base and spot colors of the clay.
The only major issue is that it seems like I need to stay away from certain spot colors because they may not look good on the bird (i.e. white), which may be a really shitty way of going about this.

Spot choice/progression as well as mold will be the last step I think.

Don't overthink or second guess designs you previously liked. It's a neverending circle.

In the latest version, the green grass of #4 is the best, easily. Pick either 3 or 4 in terms of orientation using the green grass, both are good. I personally prefer #3 if you can make the Van word slightly larger. But you can't go wrong with either.

Would it be bonkers to have both orientations of the bird and logo on each side of the chip?

Yes. Do not do this.

I hear ya. A large part of the reason I bailed out on my last two CPC set attempts was because I liked to many of my options and I just couldn’t narrow down and focus in.

FWIW I like each of the three directions with the chip set designs you have gone in here. Have you started checking spot level prices yet? Haha. Sometimes that can keep you on the rails haha.

My mentality with price per chip at this point is that this will be a set that I will keep and use forever, so I can justify a high cost (to a degree).
Using 6D18 for each chip (level8) though, may indeed be overkill.
Bottom line is that I want to make a set that I love first, and worry about cost later (don't tell my wife)

that being said, if anyone has any suggestions I am open to anything!

I have to look at my samples to see how it looks in real life, but this is sexy:

I feel like I'm so close!

Now I just need to decide left vs right orientation and shaped vs non-shaped inlay.
The only reason I'd go non-shaped is the bird might be too small to be impactful?

Note: bird colors are not final as they will match the base and spot colors of each denomination. Bird shown here matches T500 only.

I vote round inlays. With such a solid design, I think crisp, simple execution wins.

As far as bird I lean towards BIRD ON THE RIGHT because Van Cardroom just makes more sense that way. If it works for Flamingo, it works for Van.

This will be a gorgeous set, regardless -- great work!

edit: I somehow posted the exact opposite of what I intended regarding the bird, so corrected for posterity sake :)

Round inlays. Bird on right, facing left.

As much as facing right indicates forward movement, the flow from the n to the leg is nice.

Round inlay with the bird facing different ways on front and back of chip.

Great job with these. Sweet looking lineup and that inlay is really cool.

Inlay looks great! Bird on the left for me.

Tri-mooooooons!

Also, +1 on the no drop shadow. The design elements here are clean & simple lines. Drop shadow is more blocky and cartoonish. Doesn't flow as well on this inlay.

I just placed my order! Round inlays, bird on left on one side, bird on right on the other. I asked J5 to decide on the dropshadow.
Bird colors will match the chip and edge spot colors. Final inlay design is not finished yet.

I plan to make a new thread once I have all artwork and official mockups done (DB, Bounty chip, etc)

Bounty/rebuy/bonus chip (rough mockup)
Which do you guys prefer? I'm leaning toward trimoon because it's much different than the main chips.
