Buying my first set of 500, to be used for cash and tournament style games. This is the breakdown I have wrote down so far:
Chip denomination(amount)
25(200)
100(125)
500(100)
1000(50)
5000(25)

For cash games, every denomination will be made into cents, so 100 is $1 etc.

My thought process being - we are college kids so we’ll be playing a lot of .25/.25 and the occasional .25/.5. For this typically 8 handed with less experienced players who tend to 3-bet less and call lots of preflops without a raise, I went for an abundance of 25 chips. I’m not sure whether that’s a good idea or if I should just go for 150 chips for both 25s and 100s.

for tournaments i have it marked down as a 10k starting stack (12-12-7-5 start and then introduce the 5k chips as the game goes on). This should work fine up to 10 players with my current breakdown.

I am by no means experienced in this type of thing so all advice is welcome.
Thanks!

If you are playing .25 cent blinds NLHE I wouldn’t make 40% of the set 25s. Most action will be a raise to at least $1. I would switch the 25 and 100 quantities.

Also assuming a buy in for cash games as a multiple of $20 you would be wise to start with 12 quarters and 17 1s in a cash game and fill in with $5s depending on the buy in size.

Don’t use cash chips for tournament chips.... you’re asking for trouble.
why is this?

Like I say, most of the group aren’t very experienced and the don’t raise a whole lot before the turn, but I’ll see if switching them would work

you’re going to get a lot of advice here saying not to mix. And that is good advice.

work on one really good cash set and one really good tournament set. Start with whichever one your group prefers. You can get away with less security with tournament chips, but do your cash set with security in mind.

It’s a fun process when you’re starting out. Enjoy it.

Ok, I’d say we’re more tournament based so I’ll stick with that and work on a cash set in the future. Just a bit puzzled what you mean by security though, could you explain it please?

Think if you are using chips that are easily obtainable for less than face value in a cash game chips could appear that weren’t part of a buy in.

T25 tournament chips could easily be turned into $25 chips at a later point in the evening and it would be difficult to know what happened
Just always best to keep sets separate so the values are never questioned.
good luck on your journey it’s a crazy ride

Ah I see, I don’t think it’ll be too much of a problem as it will be tournament or cash game on a particular night, not both. But I’ll definitely keep a track of chip counts at the end of the night to be sure thanks for the heads up.

With a cash game, every chip on the table has a cash value. This makes the high-demonization chips vulnerable, especially if you use a set that's easy to acquire. For example, if you're using dice chips, someone could bring one from home and slip it on to the table, and a chip like this could end up costing you $500.

The same issue can happen with not readily available chips if you use one set for both tournament and cash. For example, tonight you slip a T100 into your pocket during the tournament and no one really notices. Next week when you're playing a cash game, the chip magically reappears and the bank comes up $100 short...

Not to say that you don't trust your friends, but it's best to be proactive. It's worth it to avoid potentially awkward situations by removing the temptation.

besides the security aspect of combining your chips, the breakdown needed for cash vs tournament are very different. cash games only need a few (relative) of the lowest chips for blinds, but need the majority for workhorse chips, with about 1/5th as high value chips.

Tournament breakdown is based on your max number of players, starting stacks, color-up chips, rebuys?, add-ons? The breakdown is much more complex than cash.

They’re Chinese replica ceramics of ept chips. I’m probably going to post a review of them after I get them. I live in the UK so shipping costs for American chips really aren’t worth it

A 0.25/0.50 Cash Game and T25 Tourney have slightly different Chip demo breakdown i will try to give a simplify breakdown as below,

For T25 u will need a minimum of 25/100/500/1000/5000 80/100/60/100/60 for a total of 400 chips to work

For 0.25/0.50 you will only need 100 25c even in the most limping game where 10 ppl limp pre flop every time. the horseman chip will be $1 in these game esp as your guys learn and re-raise and 3-bet in the near future which you will eventually,

Ideal Breakdown for 500 chip will be 25c/$1/$5/$25 100/200/180/20 or 80/200/200/20

so if you planning to cover both Cash and Tourney you will need to be more flexible and able to cover both demo chip required

Ah yes I have the exact same set you're referring to (I believe). Previously got them from milkfishpoker UK and then got extra ones from aliexpress.
