I want to put together a grab-and-go travel set, for those occasions where there may be a few people who want to play but not many (camping, weekend travel, killing time in an airport or hotel, etc.).

Parameters:
  • 200 chips max - I’m using 5 starting stack tubes and no more
  • Assume no more than 6 players, and that players would be ok making change given the “we’ll make it work” dynamic
  • Stakes: 25c/25c and 25c/50c
  • I’d also like the flexibility to be able to do some sort or tourney breakdown with these same chips. Not a requirement, but would be nice to have

My thoughts (25c/$1/$5/$25):

48/88/55/9 - $600 bank, tourney stacks 8/13/7

Thanks for your help!

50 x 25c
80 x 1
50 x 5
20 x 25

First 6 buyin : 8/13/2
Next 7 buyin : 0/0/5
Next 20 buyin : 0/0/0/1

So total 33 buyin of NL25 --> more than 5 per player

This also means you have also more than 2.5 x NL50 buyin par player.

As you can image, the game will require lots of change...

My Brother also have travel set similar to your also 200 chip for 0.25 0.50 Game with 100 bb buyin

40/80/60/20 25c/$1/$5/$25

We mostly played 4/5 ppl handed rather than the 6 but it should work as well. From exp, We don’t really need much 25c and you can get by with 40 even lesser if u want more $1/5 chip those are the chip that is much more in need.

There will be a lot of exchanging of Chip after every big pot win, and we use cash notes sometime when we run out of chip when more ppl >6 is involve

Side note the chip we use are the 22mm colour chip rather than the 39mm one bcos they are really small and handy for traveling

In a low-stakes game, your §1 chip might be 5c of real money, while in a higher-stakes game, it could be $1.
Exactly. Each $1 chip represents whatever the small blind is in your game.

If you're playing .25/.50, when people buy in, they get $1 in chips for every .25 in cash -- and the reverse when they cash out. E.g., buying in for $50, you get $200 in chips, Cashing out $400, you give them $100 cash.

The game is played as if it were a $1/2. It's good practice for actually playing in a casino...

best, if you do go with this, to either not have currency symbols, or a fake one (the § I used above is from the Sims series, for instance).

Or, for the ultimate in portability, get some packs of Monopoly money ;)

Settling on 40/80/60/20 (25c/$1/$5/$25)
  • $890 bank for cash games (35x buy-ins at NL25 or ~18x at NL50)
  • Tourney stacks
    • 5@ 8/13/7, 1@ x/15/7 or
    • 6@ 8/8/8

You can't give 8x 25c to 6 players with only 40 x 25c chips... You need 50 chips (48 to be exact).

I think this is the right answer and a bank of 890, so 17.x buy ins of 50 (almost 3 per player at 6-max) or 35 buy ins of 25 (almost 6 per player) should have you well covered.

If you were concerned about quarters (and I might be if you have six players) consider 60/60/60/20 as well. That bank would be 875. You would lose half a buy in at 50max, but still cover all your stakes and have 10 chips per player of the lowest denoms.

I have a small set Ive put together, quantities are set by what was available but the breakdown should stretch up to seven players if the last two dont get quarters.
45 .25
65 $1
65 $5
25 $25
10 $100

This is an interesting option since it would allow me to get another denom in the set, although it's highly unlikely to ever get in play under the conditions I think I'm building this set for.

Hey @BGinGA does one of these (or something else) stand out to you as clearly superior given the constraints?

I'm undecided between 40/80/60/20 and 60/60/60/20 - they both seem playable, have similar bank, and could cover a tourney breakdown/colorups. Is it just a matter of preference?

40/80/60/20 is a tried and tested number for my family home game, however our family is not a big fan of tourney so i cant give you feedback for that,

Our stacking stacking for NL50 is $50 8/18/6 when we playing 4 handed and 8/13/7 when playing 5 handed. We usually find ourselves short of $1 chip more time than 25c chip, I will not do 60/60/60/20 over 40/80/60/20 for cash game

Yeah I don't think I would be introducing hundreds for this purpose. Rarely do $25s even get in play at these stakes in a normal set. In a tight set, $25s are needed, but $100s shouldn't be.

My sole concern about 40 quarters is it will be tight for 6-handed (fewer than 7 per player), so that was the reason I did suggest 60/60/60/20 as a possible alternative to 40/80/60/20. Though, I really love the latter breakdown for 5-handed and under for sure.

I do think 40 or 60 are the only options for quarters. Any number of quarters that is not a multiple of four will leave you with a fractional bank amount which probably means wasted chips. 2-3 wasted chips isn't a big deal in a normal sized set, but for what the OP is trying to do, it makes a huge different. If you are willing to divide barrels, then maybe 48/73/60/19 for a bank of 860 has some merit.

Agree, maybe I'd just keep 2-3 loose $100s in case things ever went absolutely insane.

Honestly if you think $900 is the biggest bank needed (50 * 3 * 6) I wouldn't even waste the space on 2-3 chips. You are better off just letting twenty dollar bills play in that event. I'm not even a fan of four denoms in play in cash games, but I get set constraints can make that necessary. Five denoms is just a waste.

I think part of the point here is, for a low-stakes game among friends, whew security isn't an issue, let your creativity run wild!
Play money with straps (heck, print your own if you have colors you like)! Classic!
Wooden nickels? The right size for a chip tube, and lightweight (bonus if you or another of your group likes painting small items).
Mardi Gras tokens? Imagine that riverboat whistlin'! (Tip: a laser cutter will strip the anodizing, leaving a “silver” mark—actually natural aluminum color—in a shape of your choice.)

Slight change of mind. Now thinking this might be best:

48/78/60/14
  • bank of $740 - just shy of 15 buy-ins at NL50, I think this is plenty given that I think even having 6 players is rare. Cash would play in edge-case scenarios.
  • Tourney breakdown 8/13/7/x - exactly enough $5s to color up the 25c and $1, with some $25s for either deeper stacks or rebuys
