Global gaming company Angel France to lay off 80 people

Angel France, formerly Gaming partners international (GPI), has been manufacturing tokens and plaques for casinos around the world since the 1920s. The company, with its unique know-how, has unveiled a plan to lay off 80 employees out of the 105 present in Savigny and Vignoles.
By Manuel DESBOIS - Dec. 08 2020

Will almost a hundred-year-old local know-how soon leave Savigny-lès-Beaune? Unlike a player who pushes his chips to the center of the table, Japanese company Angel, which bought out Gaming partners international (GPI) a year and a half ago, is set to kick out 80 employees. A massive blow announced Thursday, December 3, during a video conference conducted by the Japanese director of the company.

A delocalized manufacturing?

Following this announcement from the owners, the employees received an email informing them of a “collective redundancy plan for economic reasons”, which would soon materialize through a Job Protection Plan (PSE), including the project has already been presented to elected staff in a document printed by management.

"Today there are 107 of us working between the two sites of Savigny-lès-Beaune and that of Vignoles, including a fixed-term contract and a young person on work-study contracts. The plan concerns 80 people, who work in the three places ... They highlight the Covid-19. In both the United States and Macau, casinos are suffering steep losses. And when they are not working, we are not working, "observes a company employee, who wishes to remain anonymous.

In the management plan, an element worries the employees: “They would relocate to Japan the manufacture of European plates and tokens, the manufacture of which is very technical and expensive. Why ? The manufacturing of US tokens by injection would also be affected, with twelve out of fourteen workshop workers leaving. "

"Three problems: the economic situation, the Covid and a cyberattack"

For several weeks, Angel France has been idling. Employees work in small groups, only "one week out of four", explains another employee joined by Le Bien public. "We do not see many people, and we no longer believe in it", she breathes bitterly, while the offices of the company based in Savigny are further cut off from the world, after an impressive cyber attack by Russian hackers (read elsewhere).

Emmanuel Gelinotte, executive director of the company confirms a "restructuring project, which we unfortunately had to announce to our employees with heavy hearts". For the manager, there are many reasons. “We took three blows of the sledgehammer: the economy, the Covid-19 and the cyberattack. Our products and traditional casino games are reorienting themselves on technology. The market is extremely difficult and the health crisis has accelerated the phenomenon. In Macao, where we achieve between 76% and 96% of our annual turnover, the activity of casinos collapsed by 82% in the first months of 2020 ”, specifies the site manager French company, also located in Las Vegas, Mexico, Macao and Japan.

While not commenting on whether to start production of European tokens, Emmanuel Gelinotte asserts that there will "be no closure in France, while there will be elsewhere. We must maintain our know-how and turn a very complicated page in our history, while keeping the company alive in the Beaune region. So far, no solution other than these layoffs has been found. "

In the meantime, the employees are trying to organize themselves: “We are combative. If there are layoffs, the employees who have given everything to the company for several decades cannot leave with the legal minimum, while we are about to let go of magnificent know-how abroad. », Insists an employee. With an average age of around 50, workers also worry about their future, more than uncertain if they are made redundant.

A century of history, from a family structure to an international group

The Bourgogne & Grasset company was created in 1911 in Beaune, but its activity dedicated to gambling began in 1925. The two founders canvass the Monte-Carlo casino, victim of a major case of counterfeiting, with a loss of 600,000 Poincaré francs. The laminated plastic game plates and tokens from the Beaune-based company quickly became popular.

Daniel Senard, emblematic leader since 1945

It was the start of a success story that was extended in the aftermath of World War II by Daniel Senard. He took over the company after five years in captivity in an officer prisoner of war camp in Germany. This entrepreneur pushes the company to improve its techniques and personally develops a network of contacts throughout the world, with a predilection for eastern countries such as Malaysia or Macao.

In 1980, Bertrand Naegelen, son-in-law of Daniel Senard, took the reins of the company. In 1990, he took part in the entry of Bourgogne & Grasset into the segment of so-called "American" casino chips, manufactured not by lamination, but by plastic injection. In 1992, Gérard P. Charlier, another son-in-law, took over the company. He was then an actor in major upheavals for Bourgogne & Grasset, which bought, in 2000 and 2002, the American companies Bud Jones and Paulson (listed on the Nasdaq), located in Las Vegas.

In 2011, GPI SAS took over the business of OMC, in Vignoles, which manufactures plastic injection molds. An office was then opened in Macao, and an American company that manufactures playing cards joined the group's assets. In May 2019, the company was transferred to Japanese company Angel. Its current leader is Kosuke Iwata, based in Yokohama.

A digital heist perpetrated by Russian hackers

For the past month, it has not been possible to reach the employees of Angel France, by email or by phone. And for good reason, Gaming partners international (GPI), whose original headquarters are in Las Vegas (United States), but whose production part is mainly carried out in France, at the Savigny-lès-Beaune site, was the target. of a cyberattack, dubbed ransomware: a group of Russian hackers, dubbed REvil, revealed (as several English-speaking specialized media and the Daily Mail wrote), in a statement released on Saturday, October 31, the theft of 540 Gb of highly sensitive data to GPI: financial documents, contracts and technical documentation.

At the time, they announced that they would give the company 72 hours to pay a ransom to prevent this information from being revealed. A way of proceeding that is gaining ground among international Internet hackers, and whose outcome has not been revealed. But at Angel France, the consequences are still very visible. "There are no more computers," explains an employee, while her manager, Emmanuel Gelinotte, explains that the company "is gradually buying them. An investigation is underway. A group of cybersecurity experts have been at work for several weeks and will be for a little while. We are paying dearly for the implementation of teleworking in March, which created holes in our secure network, ”observes the leader fatally.

DEUTSCH

Daniel Senard, seit 1945 emblematischer Chef

Angel France employees walk out and protest

To protest against a social plan of which 80 employees out of the 105 of the company will be the victims, the employees of Angel France, ex-GPI, world leader in casino chips, walked out and gathered in front of the Savignian headquarters of the manufacturer, spent last year under the Japanese flag.
By Manuel DESBOIS - Dec. 15 2020

Usually, this is the time the morning shifts take up their shift. At 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, a large part of the hundred employees of Angel France, whose three quarters of jobs (80 out of 105) are threatened by a social plan, gathered to protest against a decision which provokes sadness and anger among the employees, who blame their Japanese owner. (...)

We are world leaders. It’s shameful to do this to us ”

"We have a lump in our stomach," breaths an employee of the company's workshops, replacing his mask. You have to see how it happened, all of a sudden like that. Around me, we have what, 15 years, 24 years, 25 years, 35 years of seniority in the company ... "One of the oldest employees, arrived in the 1980s, shares her bitterness:" Here, we have almost done the walls, we saw the machines arrive… Since the Japanese have been here, people have come to work here, they have taken photos and filmed our work. They even took a robot that we developed and tuned to bring it back to Japan. "

Hostility towards Japanese firm Angel, which acquired GPI in October 2019, is palpable. “The buyout was done on the sly, and they've been lying to us from the start. If they had revealed their intentions gradually, it would have hurt us less, "says a young employee, shaking his head. Stunned, an office worker still struggles to come to terms with the idea of a social plan: "We never thought we would experience that here. There has always been a good atmosphere between employees and management. After 25 years of working here, it's tough. "

In an emergency, CSE members appealed to the CFDT, a union they all joined, calling on employees to do the same: “This period promises to be particularly difficult. Let’s be united ”. Jacques Amiot, CFDT chemistry energy Burgundy secretary, present with the employees, explains that "things will not drag on after the truce of the confectioners".

Frustrated, the protesters seem to have little hope. To the point of hoping that “Italian competitors will recover the markets. We are the only French company with this know-how, and world leaders. It is wrong to do this to us. "

Explanations that do not convince

On December 8, Emmanuel Gelinotte, executive director and manager of the site which is the company's international headquarters, listed the three reasons for a social plan that he explained that he had to announce “with a tight heart”: “The economic situation, the Covid-19 and the cyberattack ”. Arguments rejected by the employees who demonstrated on Tuesday morning of December 15: “To begin with, we all have the feeling that the Covid has a broad back. Beyond that, this is not the first time that the order book has been light ", squeaks an employee, relayed by one of her colleagues:" We do plastics. We have a lot of possibilities to make other products, but there is no attempt on Angel's part. "

Everyone has the unpleasant impression that Mass was being said before the pandemic. And the attack by the Russian pirate group REvil, which was described in the international press and announced by the thugs, is fueling paranoia: “I cannot access the files without the approval of the Japanese. This hacking still falls well. We were without computers for a month and now there is no telephone line. I got a PC, but I just have basic software, no more invoicing or calculating prices. "

While a simple physical welcome has been maintained, employees find it hard to believe the words of their manager, who says that there "will not be any closure in France, while there will be elsewhere. We must maintain our know-how and turn a very complicated page in our history, while keeping the company alive in the Beaune region ".

Price of chips just went up....again.
Reading between the lines, I see costs going down. I read robotics and automation taking over in a consolidated plant. Might have it wrong...

But more orders are needed to keep it afloat... count me in. :)

I was more referring to paulson pricing here on PCF. May be totally unrelated but seems like some sellers will use any excuse to maximize their profits/minimize their losses. (As they should imo). 2021 will be an interesting year for casino clay chip pricing given Covid19 pandemic impact on casinos vs closed casino chips flooding the market vs lower new chip demand by casinos.

I’m sure it’ll just be made elsewhere. Whenever you take over a company you are looking to save costs and raise efficiency.

I did some research on the famous hack

apparently it affects all stuff from all production sites. So even paulson chips made in mexico are compromised

strange that no poker website has mentioned it ...

REvil ransomware threat actors reveal their gaming company victim

October 31, 2020Dissent

In a recent interview with Yelisey Boguslavskiy, “UNKN” of the threat actors known as REvil (Sodinokibi) indicated that they were planning a major attack on a gaming network.

Today, the threat actors added GPI (Gaming Partners International) to their dedicated leak site. GPI describes itself as a leading provider of casino currency and table game equipment worldwide.

As they have done in other incidents, the threat actors posted screen shots showing directories of files on allegedly compromised systems.
Screenshot provided by REvil as proof of access to GPI.

They gave GPI 72 hours to respond, stating:

Absolutely all servers and working computers of the company are hacked and encrypted. There was a large data leak 540Gb of the most important information of the company, technical data, financial documents, contracts with ALL CASINO in LAS-VEGAS, MACAO, EUROPE, bank documents.

DataBreaches.net reached out to GPI for a statement, but did not receive an immediate reply. This post will be updated when one is received.

Whelp, time for Paulson to change all of their chips to new unique house molds and sell chips on their compromised RHC, THC, and IHC molds to the home market.

Completely agree and also to release some of their formulas in particular ones like orange blaze

They lost access to all of their computerized casino contact info, assuming they had no off-line or off-site backups.

Once upon a time, a poker movie was made starring a guy named Matthew Damon. A casino chip manufacturing company known as ASM made chips for the movie. The design of those chips was owned and protected by the manufacturer. Nobody could recreate them. ASM was later sold and after the new owners took over, they realized that there was a strong demand for these protected chip designs from the movie, so they decided to offer tribute sets of the same quality with the exact same designs to the public.

Tick-tock, tick-tock...

I’m dense sorry, are you saying that Matt Damon is behind this attack for retribution/revenge?

Believe he means CPC offered up Rounders chips after ASM said they wouldn't, do to demand the movie made for them..............or maybe Matt Damon has moved from Hollywood actor to ransomware kingpin.

Personally, I'm holding out hope that Angel decides to offer up a group buy and the lakeshore inn design is picked. ;)

Seems like curious timing.

With vaccines just starting to get real distribution, the full reopening of casinos should be 6-12 months off, and one can expect a massive return to gaming.

Also, the COVID downturn for casinos seems likely to lead to some sales to deeper-pocketed buyers, and rebranding (i.e. demand for vast new chipsets).

This sounds more like the new owners wanted to “downsize” and “restructure” anyway, and is using COVID as cover.

P.S. re: hacking: They had no backup? No hard copy of contacts and contracts? Rokay. But even if that were the case: Put your army of idle workers on the task of calling all your casinos to alert them about the situation and rebuild your contacts. A half dozen people could do it in a week.

I'm curious how they "found out" that the hackers were - out of all the nations in the world - Russians.

I am not a hacker myself, but as a software developer I work in a related field. I am expected to produce software that is as robust as possible so it cannot be exploited by the most common attacks, so I need to know about them to a certain degree. And with that shared background, I know there is little if anything a professional hacker is forced to leave as a trace back to him.

Logs can be faked if the system was compromised. IP addresses can be spoofed / rerouted over multiple nodes across the globe. Just because an attacker's IP address that got logged somewhere was assigned to this and that country, it doesn't mean the hacker actually sits in that country. Just because someone finds cyrillic characters in the malware binaries they leave behind doesn't mean they have to be Russians either. You can deliberately put them in there (and this is being done all the time), either to just direct suspicion away from you, or even to deliberately frame someone else (false flag). As far as I know casinos and gambling are mostly banned in Russia since many years, so it'll be challenging to come up with a credible motive why they would have wanted to do it. The customized note is an indicator that this was a targeted attack, not a random spray&pray infection.

Backups: One of our sysadmins at work (back when we still communted to the office that is) frequently wears a shirt saying "No backup? No sympathy!" A company as big as GPI should have offline/offsite backups, but restoring them to machines to get these into working state again does take a while (you need to get rid of the compromised machines first, else you are in danger of compromising your offline backup as you bring it online for a restore!). If they had no backup at all, I guess there will be a job opening for a new sysadmin soon.

I find it incredible they don't have a secure local network which for the sensitive information part would not be connected to internet. i mean manufacturing procedures and some old stuff don't need to be always online
