Hi everyone, new member checking in. I found this (apparently great) group while I was trying to find a good set of poker chips and couldn't find a good group to look at comparisons. Now I have found it. I'm looking at a CPC set and about to get some samples. I'm always happy to find another addiction and after spending a few hours on the site, poker chips may be it. I never knew I had such a passion for coloring and custom chips. Who knew?

Welcome to the group. I think you should join us "Bills Mafia" style and jump through a table :)

(Ok you don't have to do that)

In all seriousness don't get lost in all the chipping hype here. If you use the search function and dig deep you can find all the information needed to run any home game you can fathom here at PCF.

Welcome aboard
Hide your wallet. Wallets hate it here. Lol
Enjoy your fall down the rabbit hole
And bring your wallet.
Really awesome forum and a lot of amazing members.

Welcome! CPCs are awesome chips! Be sure to check out the custom chips sub-forum. Lots of great advice and help can be found there when designing your set.

Hello and welcome!

CPC? You're ready to start at the top, aren't you? Keep us informed of how the process is going - we love to talk about customs and their design characteristics!

New guy here on the forum myself, glad to see you here! It's a lot of information to take in, but I have learned so much since I got here and the members have been absolutely invaluable in my development. Never feel bad about asking questions here if you get lost, it's all I have done since my arrival, and I have been overwhelmed by the community's support.

Kinda jealous you are starting with CPC already, I'll get there one day! Looking forward to seeing your designs and mock ups.

If I have any advice to give from what I have learned so far is this:
Get samples
Get samples
Get samples
Get samples
and idk if I said it already, get samples!!
They have saved me a lot of money, and had I learned that before ordering my first set of chips, I'd have saved more  :whistling: :banghead: :D

My advice is do what you’re doing. Start at the top and avoid the mistake of getting samples, a waste of time and postage.

By this you mean avoid samples of OTHER chips, not CPC samples right? Because you definitely want to get your hands on some CPC color samples and mold samples to see what you like for your set of customs.

Exactly my thoughts too, gotta see if you like it in person before you commit a bunch of cash to a full set IMO

I actually have some clay samples I bought and it let me know that some of the colors I thought I liked looked like poop in person. They also don't agree with the wild and frequent temperature changes where I am living now just sitting on my desk at home out of the sun, so It's ceramics for me until I move.

I know I am in the minority on my thoughts on samples. Most chips look better in person. Plus you can’t tell much from looking at one chip as opposed to a rack or even a barrel

could you give examples of this phenomenon?

Sure, I don't mind. They were flat when I got them, they are now warping a little and you can see gaps between them more as time goes on. I kept them on the desk to see what would happen if I didnt baby them basically. It goes from really cold to really hot in the span of hours here, so I wanted to see if any of that would affect the chips at all.

One of them I would consider a factory second, as the edge spot was crumbly and separating from the rest of the chip, probably didn't have enough moisture in the clay when they went to mold it or something to begin with. It started to look worse and then I decided to add a little pressure and it snapped off. Wasn't surprised by the result, and not complaining at all about them by any means. Obviously, if you apply pressure to a clay, you can break it, I just was surprised it was that weak. The rest of the chip was solid though, I couldn't break it when I had tried.

I still want some CPC's one day, but getting these made me kinda like ceramics more because I don't have to worry about storage and maintenance with those chips (proper storage, oiling, flattening warping chips etc.). More of a quality of life thing than anything else

I can agree with that for sure. Having a whole barrel over 1 chip is a night and day experience.

I'm not saying that you are wrong for suggesting that samples are a waste of time, you have solid points, I just tend to disagree a little.

It's difficult to get a good grasp of feel for the various molds from a sample set, but getting a color sample set is pretty important. The colors are a lot different in person than they are in the mockup tool.

Plus it costs you almost nothing. You can sell it for what you bought it for pretty much.
