New Member First Time Cash Set (1 Viewer)

If you are interested in a beautiful, mint cash set that will scale from .25/.50 to 2/5, I have a spare cash set from the HSI sale:

100 x $2.50 new primary chips (these can be relabeled as a rack of fracs or just played as fracs)
200 x $1 secondary 1A chips
400 x $5 secondary chips
200 x $25 secondary chips
80 x $100 secondary chips
20 x $500 secondary chips

Asking $1700 + S&H. This is cost from TCR sale. Thx!

Thank you @boltonguy for the offer! Was really cool to see the TCR sale go down. Right now, I'm awaiting some samples to arrive, and holding out for a nice Cali set. Hopefully, patience will pay off! Thanks again!

Welcome, you’re doing all the right things. It’s possible the CPC delays could allow you to refine your design and make sure it’s set. Enjoy yourself.

When you think Cali, you don’t have to be exact. I went maroon over black. What could you do with chocolate or charcoal? If you go CPC, the yellows are the weak spot- I went dayglow yellow and it was too light for me. I wish I had gone butterscotch, yellow (search Scarlet’s Room 1000) or Maybe orange (Nevada Club $500)

Thank you @warma! In comparing now the two sample sets, I think I'm going to wait it out, and see if a Paulson Cali set goes up for sale. The main key, for me at least, is the sound when I handle the chips. Paulson chips sound more solid and lower pitched when handling/shuffling them. If that makes sense. CPC's just don't sound the same and are "higher pitched" less solid sounding. Probably doesn't make sense to everyone, but I definitely can tell the big difference in sound between the two.

Makes sense. Having handled mint leaded Paulsons, I agree there’s a difference.

Update #2:

CPC Samples arrived, and my partial Paulson Sample Set. Thank you to @Marhault for the extras!

Oh no more Fish cards making the rounds!! Those things are great for Card Houses, and fire starters... as long as you don't mind the quick plastic burn off! Lol

I actually prefer the clank of a slightly more dense chip myself. BCC Samurai's, Mardi Gras V2, even a nice broke in CSQ CPC mold really has what I consider the right feel and Clank. I am not the norm though, I also prefer RHC over THC as far as feel and even find what most consider the garbage Paulson mold to be my favorite chips... but again that's what makes this hobby awesome, we all don't have to like the same thing!!

It makes perfect sense. This is why you get samples

I definitely agree with the above posts..get some samples first. I wanted to dive into a full set but decided to grab some samples first and luckily I did cause the ones I wanted turned out to be my least favorite sample

Update #3:

BTP Tourney Sample Set arrived! Thank you @sheikh617! :wow:

If anyone has a BTP cash set sample, or even full cash set for sale, I'm definitely in the market and would pay for the the full set, no splits necessary. @Windwalker?

Like 95% of the community (it seems), this is definitely at the top of my list. Cali colors + 43mm make it one of the most unique sets out there, which is what I'm looking for. Definitely tests your finger dexterity when doing chip tricks, but I'm reasonable, and willing to compromise! ;)

FYI - the BTP cash set isn’t 43mm. Only the $100 and $500 chips are 43mm, the rest are 39mm.

Thank you @Windwalker! Definitely, good to know! I guess the only way for me to be sure if I truly like them or not, is to have someone send me a 1000 chip "sample", before I buy a set lol ;)

... there's a color called "Colon Orange" ?!?

Where's Lung Pink? and Femur White?

Update #5

Royal Blank Sample Set arrived today! Thank you @Apache. Love the 43mm. I think I found my custom set. And the price point can't be beat! I added the BTP sample set for comparison, sorry about my crappy iPhone camera washing out the colors:

What do you think about the difference in feel of the china clay royals vs the paulsons? I am about to make a similar decision and am curious about what the other beginners think.

Hi @OfficerLovejoy,

I'm a beginner to the chip game too, so take this for what it's worth. I'm sure there are a ton of members and posts explaining all the nuanced differences between Paulson and china clay chips. For me, there are definitely some noticeable differences, but also some striking similarities. These observations are purely based on looks and feel. I don't have a food scale or any other measuring devices to say if these observations are true or accurate to the number:

Looks/Color:
Paulson, hands down has the brightest and most variety when it comes to colors. Especially in yellow. If you're looking for the best and brightest "looking" poker chips, Paulson is the clear top choice. That being said 43mm, bright Paulson chips are more rare, and have higher demand for the best/rare denominations and colors so you get what you pay for there. Also spot patterns, in terms of aesthetics, can't be beat either here. But it's in the eye of the beholder really.

Royal colors (so far) are the brightest colored china clay chips, I've come across so far in my limited collecting of sample chips so far. The yellow is the closest yet to the Paulson bright yellow (but you'll never find anything as bright as Paulson's yellow imo). This is important to me personally, as I'm looking buy/build a Cali colored set. I don't have any mineral oil yet, so I've only washed them with soap and water, but I'm sure they will be even brighter in appearance, once I do buy some. Also, the spot patterns on these chips are great for china clays as well.

Feel/Weight:
Paulson are definitely "sharper". The edges are better formed, at a 90 degree angle, and make for a crisper feel and more aesthetically pleasing, smooth, single column, look when stacked. They are also, slightly lighter in weight.

Royals are more "rounded" and beveled on the edges, which makes for a more softer feel when shuffling, but in my opinion, makes them easier to shuffle so that could be a plus for some there. But you definitely can tell the difference between the two. I posted a picture of the similar colored chips vs the BTP sample set I have, stacked up for comparison.

Sound-wise, the Royals are very close as well to Paulson's. This may be due to 43mm size or just that they are better quality china clays. I don't have any 39mm china clays to compare though. Unlike CPC chips that sound nothing like Paulsons and are noticibly lighter as well (which I don't prefer).

Overall:
For me, the price of the Royals just is too good to pass up right now, at $0.52 a chip, that's $520 for a 1000 chip cash set. Just for comparison, the BTP chips shown, for a 1000 chip cash set, with the rare $20 denomination, would cost well over $10,000, on the open market. And that's if one of the few members who own them, would ever want to put them up for sale.

I'm still a beginner and don't have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on multiple cash and tourney Paulson sets. Even if I did. I don't have a regular game to where I would be able to put those sets to good use in rotation. Also, given that 43mm Paulson cash sets don't exist, if I wanted a 43mm Paulson, Cali colored, cash set, I would need to slowly collect and relabel various Paulson 43mm chips, which could take a very long time. So this may be my best option for now, we'll see. Hope you find this helpful!

don't think you want to oil china clays. they don't absorb oil like compression molded chips do

Wow, thank you for the detailed answer. I'll definately will have to get samples. Just ordered some from CPC and will compare them to the China Clays and the 3 single paulson chips that i got in a mixed sample.

Hi @wolfpack,

I was checking out The Official Royals Pr0n Thread and the members there all seem to be oiling their chips. There is a post that might be a solution, based on what you're referring to. They used food grade mineral oil instead of organic, and has had some long term success with the chalkiness not returning. Thoughts?

Welcome @Sereph

everyone has given some great advice.
I would add a couple other options
Why not have your cake and eat it too?
You could pick up an nice royals set and use that while you work with a designer like P5woody or Johnny5 etc.... and put your order in to cpc.

I have a royals high roller set. The guys really like em
I have a custom cpc set The guys really like em.
I have multiple Paulson sets(39mm). The guys really like those too.
I have multiple 43 sunfly sets. The guys really like those
but the ones I get the most compliments on are my 43 DDLM from BRpro
Just another idea

I have never had royals spefiically, but when I put regular mineral oil on other china clays and they just became slick and didn't really absorb it, but if others have had success with some other oil then go for it. I would just make sure you use a very light mount

Thank you @Justin Olson for the recommendation! I saw the 15% off sale going on right now and was definitely considering it. But the timing is just a little too soon for me. They definitely look nice and I'll be ordering a sample set. Maybe next time these go on sale I'll be ready to order.

I am definitely considering custom labels for Royal blanks. Just haven't decided the exact theme yet.

Great plan
when you do order samples from brpro I am a fan of the 43’s. Make sure you check them out.
I have great experience and have sets designed by P5woody( see here )
I have heard great things about johnny5 and know timinator, quicksilver, jeepologyoffroad, and I’m sure there are more that I missed. Eventually you will land on a design idea you like and get their help.
when you get your design done I have had gear do labels for me and I have had abcgifts do labels for my royals.
Best of luck on your adventures
