Hi everyone! I'm a recreational player in Australia. I loooooove a good set of chips with amazing, classy designs. I've probably spent more time watching chip videos than playing in the last year :)

Primarily tournament player and am looking to buy a set for home games, because I basically have none right now. I'll be on this forum learning and would love any recommendations to start with. Also, if any stores are great for Australian collectors, would love to hear about them!

Welcome!! You'll learn lots quick, but say good bye to any disposable income you have  :ROFLMAO:

Welcome onboard! What’s your budget for a set? Best bet is to watch the classifieds here, there are really no actual stores that carry high end chips anymore.

A couple exceptions (US based though):

Apachepokerchips.com
brpropoker.com

Hi Eriks and Emitsu! I would honestly say my budget is decent considering I really just want one solid chip set (600-1000 pieces) that I use all the time and would pay what is needed to get it. I don't think I'll be a collector, because I don't love that many designs I've seen out there. I am trying to understand a few things about poker chips and the community in general.

1. It seems everyone has Paulsons, in various forms. If I bought a set of Paulsons, would they be used?
2. Is there a comparable manufacturer of new ceramic or clay chips that are almost as good or equal to Paulson's?
3. In doing my research, I think I have very specific requirements of what I do and don't like (eg. same edge spot design for every denomination, no $ sign, correct colors for each denom etc). When I saw those Aurora Star tournament chips (partly what led me to finding this forum), I fell in love as they are almost perfect. Is there a way to get something like those, even if they are custom made?

Happy to try lots of samples, but as some international members have pointed out in other threads, it's much, much longer and 3-5x more expensive to try a bunch of sample sets :(

Welcome mate, as stated above check out apachepokerchips. I’ve purchased my sets there. Sure you’ll find something that suits your needs.

G'day mate,
Where are you located. I'm in Brissie.
Cheers,
Adam

The only other manufacturer that makes clay chips similar to Paulsons and that currently operates is classicpokerchips.com They produce custom chips and you’ll be able to get the chips exactly how you want them. Compared to Paulson they have a limited color palett though (most noticibly they lack a really good yellow).

Looks and feel are also quite different from Paulson and not everyone likes these. You should most (need to) definitely get both color and mold samples if you’re going down this
route.

For mint or excellent condition Paulsons like the Aurora star your best bet is definitely the classifieds here. Expect to pay top dollar for both cpc and mintish paulsons, $2-3/chip and up. CPCs can be had for cheaper if going with certain molds and less complex edge spot patterns. Same goes for used paulsons.

Hello and welcome. Take your time and enjoy the process!

Welcome! It sounds like you either want a custom set or a tourney set because those won’t have dollar signs. The Aurora Star tourney hotstamps are very nice in person. Someone around here can likely get you a sample. If you like those may we these as well. Not in my best interest as I will be bidding on them but...

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Gotta say this is a truly intriguing community, it's incredible something so cool has built up around something so simple as poker chips.

So that Paulson tourney set you linked, is that an original Paulson collection, the kind everyone talks about being top quality? How would that compare to those CDC custom chips? I like the idea of making my own customs but if there's a tourney set out there that is already perfect for me, happy to buy that. I'd say the Aurora Star comes close, as well as the one you linked!

I am indeed in Brisbane! Is there any good way to check out samples here, or we just have to deal with US shipping?

There a a few of us here that might have a few samples laying around. Sold most of mine unfortunately I think.

Good news is there are more and more of us in Aus now, so we might be able to do some domestic buying and selling. Save on the crazy shipping prices.

Speaking just for myself, those Paulson’s I linked and the Aurora Star tourney set are top notch. The Aztar tournament chips are considered to be very desirable. I prefer them to the CPCs.

With that said it’s not that you cannot make custom Paulsons. I bought these below which are considered “murdered”,ie someone mills the label off a Paulson chip. You can also overlabel. @Gear can do either and their labels rule. The link is an awesome example!

Good show. PM me your address and I'll send samples of CPC, china clay, Paulson for you to check out.

I purchased chips from another PCF member out of Brisbane.
You should be able to find a decent network around here.
Welcome to the forum.

Bump for random question - what the heck is a frac? Everyone talks about fracs, yet there isn't a single explanation I can find on the site about what that means.

Frac or fractional, for any chip denominated less than a dollar (or euro or whatever). Usually 25 or 50 cents.

That's funny but yes any equal fraction of a dollar, many use nickles and dimes also in low stakes home games. Many casino's do not make fracs or haven't for years so they are a bit more rare and therefore cost more for casino used chips!

Example, a typical rack of casino used $.25 chips on average are about $300 for a rack of 100!! Usually much cheaper to go with customs or ceramics if that is the route you are planning!!

Any updates on what you have found so far @GamePal64?

Also don't worry we all wondered the same damn thing when we started with all the chip lingo! Overtime is you stay active in the hobby it just becomes another language with all the abbreviations!
