Trump said during the coronavirus update that this was an “attack” as briefed by his advisors while Reuter’s was earlier reporting someone left a couple thousand tons of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse for a decade and forgot about it. Curious how this sorts out.
I could be mistaken, but isn't ammonium nitrate only half the equation for {BIG BOOM}. Don't you also need diesel fuel?

This from Wikipedia
It decomposes when heated or in the presence of acid into water and nitrogen.[2] Ammonium nitrite solution is stable at higher pH and lower temperature. If there is any decrease in pH lower than 7.0, it may lead to an explosion, since the nitrite can react to it. A safe pH can be maintained by adding an ammonia solution. The mole ratio of ammonium nitrite to ammonia must be above 10%.

I definitely don’t know anything about this kind of thing, but I would assume they are just speaking to the fuel of the explosion. I would have to imagine you would need some other intervening force. I mean apparently the 2700 tons of this stuff where sitting there fine for many years until something else came along, if true.

Stored in/near a fireworks factory that appears to have caught fire.

Yeah I saw this earlier today, very scary explosion, knocked the guy filming right on his arse

ammonium nitrate, gonna cause some bad air for the responders trying to get in and help people.

Saw this earlier, so horrible. There's one video from a balcony far away that shows the instant of the secondary explosion. Very sad :(

Halifax and Texas City had similar explosions last century. It is tragic, but nothing new.

If I rember correctly the Halifax explostion in 1917 was considered to be the largest man-made explosion until the first atomic weapon was detonated. Obviously a terrible accident that killed a lot of people. When I read about that accident it was amazing some of the bravery displayed. Particlarly by the harbor master who stayed at his post warning a train to stay out of town due to the ammo ship on fire and saved many lives while sacrificing his own.

Our very own @Numerobis lives in Beirut if I’m not miastaken. I’ve been in conversation with him the last few days, I believe his last message was after this explosion. Check in here my friend, hope all is well

I live 2 km aways from the explosion and was home filming it when the second, and much bigger, one blew
I have gone through the war here but has never seen anything like this. Never ever. I could never imagine the shockwave impact. I am hurt but relatively OK. I have many friends who lost relatives. Death count will be in the 1000’s not 73!!

The official report is like most of you said : ammonium nitrate. But a lot here believe Israelis jets dropping bombs on hezballa illegal weapons (i am not trying to initiate any political debate, i hate hate hate Iran and hezballa)
Either way this country has suffered a lot because of its alignment with the axis of evil. Most of us are hostages and i hope today will be the start of a new Lebanon
