Hello fellow PCF'ers... quick question for you...

I am about to pull the trigger on my first web transaction for poker chips. So, because it is not through a transaction site, the seller is asking me to send him the money and he will ship the chips to me. Logic.

So... what is the guarantee that I will get the chips... TRUST, I guess...

How do you handle these transactions ? Doing business only with sellers that have history on the site ? Is Paypal protecting me if I don't get my chips ? Please help me :)

If you send friends and family, then PayPal will not cover you - most seem to sell this way as it avoids PayPal fees. But there does need to be some trust involved doing it this way. I guess if you use PayPal goods and services, but you cover the fee, this would be ok. This way the seller still gets the accurate account, you pay a bit more but still get protection? (I'm not 100% on that though).

Yes, 99% of sales is based on trust

Paypal will cover you when your not using Family & Friends option (and pay the transaction fee).
In case you are not feeling sure or seller has limited time on the forum, you can always ask a relay from members that have a good standing

Agree on what to do with shipping insurance or who is liable when package is lost or damaged

I have purchased several sets of chips from people on Craigslist, Facebook, etc., that have required me to mail cash or a check to them. I have lost money, but it's infrequent enough that I don't feel theft is much of a risk.

A much greater risk is trusting non-PCFers to properly pack the chips. Far greater losses have occurred from damaged chips or boxes that aren't taped properly and come open compared to people just up and stealing money.

Definitely recommend paying the fee and using goods and services if you're at all concerned with a falling out from the seller

No, the transaction is not with someone from PCF

I have bought from Facebook marketplace several times with sellers I'm entirely unfamiliar with. I've always looked up their info in FB to see if they look like a legit person etc. No bad exchange yet, but I always factor in a risk of no goods being delivered into the cost. I would do regular PayPal g&s, and that would hopefully help if you have any problems. Cost VS risk is something to consider. If it's a low bargain price it might be worth a gamble, if it's highly priced it might not be worth the risk. IMO.

Here’s another vote for paying the fee and protecting yourself. Where PayPal transactions are concerned, I really don’t even consider the ‘Goods and Services’ fee to be a fee at all. I just factor it in as part of the cost of the transaction.

If it's really big bucks and you are worried about Paypal's buyer protection, there have always been commercial escrow services available, as well as "trade guardian".
