I'm hosting this weekend and have decided to go with a pre-buy format for something different. I thought I understood how these worked but now I'm second guessing myself so thought I'd post here.

Buying in gets a 10k stack and a rebuy chip. Anyone who busts out during the rebuy period gets another 10k. Anyone who survives beyond the rebuy period gets a 10k add-on.

Am I doing it right? I've started wondering what the difference is between this and just giving everyone 20k to start with, since that's what will eventually end up in play.

Pre-buy tournaments aren't really re-buy tournaments, since you pay for everything up-front. Best to call 'em re-load buttons, for that reason -- nobody's buying anything at that point.

Some formats give bonus chips at the end of the re-load period if not used -- so that last add-on would be 15K in your case.

Pre-buy/Re-load tournaments offer the 2nd-chance opportunities and bad-beat protection of re-buy tournaments without the financial drawbacks, while rewarding those who manage to avoid going bust early.

So what you're saying @BGinGA is that the add-on should be more than the reload to reward those who don't bust?

I'd go the opposite direction. We did a tournament like this last year but it was "use it or lose it".

Made for a lot of fun, early action.
