yeah if the quarter and the $2 are going to see play simultaneously, i would be concerned about the red in both chips.

as to the design, i'm not really averse to a non-branded chip, but i think you ought to let a professional designer take those selections for each individual chip and try to bring some cohesion to the set with a universal design scheme. the combination of photos and several illustration styles doesn't really work for me.

I don't think the quarter and $2 chips would come into play at the same time. The quarters would be useful for ante games or low-limit NL hold em games. The $2 chip would be more for a 2/4, 4/8 limit game.

The pictures were just as examples, I would definitely need a designer to provide a consistent design theme across all the chips.

are you thinking denominated and a branded room? poseidon's palace is a pretty sweet name, but i have to admit i have a soft spot for just a design and a denom without any words at all.

I was thinking about having denoms on each chip and the Poseidons Palace branding. I'd also lean more towards the "realistic" pics like the dolphins, rather than the cartoony ones. It'd be cool to be like "gimme three racks of sharks"

yeah you can do it in a way that is both realistic and stylized, i think. consider berg's truman's house chips. that's basically just a photo of truman's head, but it was recently mistaken (on that other forum) as a drawing. same thing kind of going on with the bear on the rounders chips. looks a little like a photo, a little like a drawing.

i guess if you're going with different things (dolphin, starfish, whatever) on the different chips you kind of have to have some kind of branding through the set as a whole to make it clear it's all of a piece. obviously the bahamia set does that well.

I used the A-mold but I'm not sure if there's any that are recommended over others?

none of the molds would thematically tie in at this point, so i think it will really be a matter of matching the art to the mold during the design process. if you go with big, detailed inlays, FDL will be the way to go imo. if you go with something simpler, i'd rank CPC's molds that aren't themed or monogrammed as follows from best to worst:

MD-50
circle square
plain mold
roman
hourglass

though i guess the roman mold is forever gone. too bad because while it doesn't have an explicit theme, its appearance with rope/knot-like design could be seen to tie into a sea-faring set such as this. ultimately, i would probably go with the MD-50 unless you felt that was too overtly vintage looking, in which case circle square looks best.

I'm using the designer at pokerchipsonline.com and it has:

A-Mold
Cards & Dice
Circle Square
H-Mold
Horse Head
Hourglass
No Mold
Elephant & Crown

I don't see an FDL or MD-50 listed. And while I like the look of the Roman mold, I didn't care for the feel of the chips (came across too plasticy almost)

Yep, Roman mold is done. I have a set of Roman molds I picked up cheap that gets played at another game every week, and while they do look super-nice, both the feel and chip consistency leave a lot to be desired in comparison to most other molds.

I know this won't be the most popular choice, but if I were going to make this set, I would use the hourglass mold (I think that's the first time I've ever said that!) 1 1/16" inlays and not totally aberrant thematically like just about every other mold would be. Also I think these would look pretty killer on that mold.

BTW that $25 is SIIIIICK as-is. :)

I did a King Neptune's Cardroom design a while back that sounds a bit like this idea.

Updated the OP with Version #2 of the design, switched to pics that have more consistency in their style. I'll copy it here too:

I can't access the "other site" at the moment, but this was a concept I originally posted there a year or two ago I believe. Just something I'm getting excited over again

Just did a google search and I posted this back on 2012: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/custom-chips-general/82134-fantasy-chip-idea-poseidon-set.html

Here is the design I mentioned.

Ah, hadn't been aware of that. But as stated, my design concept was from two years ago in Oct of 2012. Not to mention my design incorporates different images and edge spot styles for each chip rather than what you did.

What about the scroll mold? Wave-ish?

The chip designer at pokerchipsonline.com (who I'd be purchasing from one day) doesn't have the scroll mode, just this:

A-Mold
Cards & Dice
Circle Square
H-Mold
Horse Head
Hourglass
No Mold
Elephant & Crown

Is there another chip designer online I can use that does include the scroll mode or lvl 4 & 5 edgespots?

Hope this works!

Do not like either of the red chips in the top set, or the more cartoonish images in the bottom set. The octopus in the bottom set is an example of the worst. Absolutely LOVE some of those chips, in both sets, though . . .

Images for the top set would be PERFECT if you could put the shell and the starfish on a "sandy" background. All the other images are fully realized, those are the only two that are not. Makes them stand out as odd.

It allows me to see the Scroll mold, but not to use it when creating mock-ups in the designer

Either of the red chips in the top set........do you mean the pink and the red chip (the $3 and $5? crab and seahorse?)

Also, those pics were just for the overall concept, they are not final artwork or anything, just pics I found that matched the subject matter (i.e. the $500 purple/lavender chip will have a squid or kraken) The same applies to the backgrounds on the chips, obviously I'd need a designer to flesh these out to match better, plus add denoms and the Poseidons Palace moniker

Use the FORCE! ... Can't do it with the MD50 either but that didn't stop anybody! (use the Force!)

Bumping because the new tool and new spot patterns. Is there any possibility we might be able to do this set as a group buy with everyone pitching in on the design and all that jazz?

It's going to take me forever before I can afford the set if I'm just buying on my own. But perhaps with the power of a group buy we could get artwork and spot patterns finalized and make this set a reality? Anyone else who'd be interested?

Not sure what you think's gonna happen with group buy pricing that would alter your financial situation in regards to affording a set. You can either afford it or not -- there are no price breaks on quantity purchases from CPC.

Yeah GB is no help. Even if you get people to pitch in for design costs, that's a truly negligible portion of the overall cost of the set.

If you're looking to do the set more economically my suggestion would be to just get three or four denoms for either the cash or tourney set and then add other denoms later. Definitely order the full amount of each denom at one time, though, just to avoid color variation within denoms.

^^this.

Start with what you use now. And use the winnings from hosting games to put towards more.

Also consider changing it to Aquarium Card Room if using the A mold ;)
