Hi Everyone,

I have come across a set of 1000 random chips on eBay that I think would be a fun home game set, or even a fun project set to build up and customise etc.

I'd love some ideas!

Do you think labels or stamping would work best on this type of chip?

I’m pretty sure those are super diamond plastic chips. They can be hot stamped, but I don’t think there is enough recess to label them.

Maybe you could have them milled to allow for inlays?? Not sure if that's worth the cost though for plastics.

Could definitely be a cool project. Chips like these mill well. Did you get a fair price? They can be cool, but they're not worth much.

Super Diamonds. 6 to 8 cents each when bought in bulk. Do any milling and labelling work yourself, as it is not worth to pay anyone else to do it.
Is there a difference between the diamond chips that I posted and what you guys are calling Super Diamonds?

Nope. Same stuff. Super Diamonds, or SD, is a catch-all term.

However, there is a vintage form of these chips that I like to refer to as Superior Diamonds. They are plastic, very many decades old. They have their injection pips in the diamond itself, and an inner and outer ring of equivalent width. Weigh closer to 8.5 or 9g rather than 8g. Feel good, sound nice.

“Super Diamonds” is just what they’re usually marketed at. There are a similar plastic diamond mold chip that are softer feeling and not as slippery. My local casino uses them for tourneys. Not sure if they’re available for purchase anywhere.

Additionally, Paulson made a diamond mold chip in the past. These are actually compression molded clay chips, and the diamonds are different. It’s pretty easy to distinguish them from the plastics.

Mail day!

They seem to be in good condition, with only 1 broken chip in the 1000+ that arrived.

A lot of colour variation from chip to chip, but with 1000+, I might be able to get a few playable sets with good colours.

How would I mill them?

I can attest to this. My first post-fire set is 500 vintage super diamonds weighing 8.5 grams. I bought some new 8g diamond chips (deceptively advertised as 8.5g) to fill in the set, but the newer chips are thinner than standard chips.

Older super diamonds sound nice, stack nice, and are pretty good plastic chips. Newer ones sound "limp" and stacking...well, I think when Newtonian physicists discuss a "frictionless surface" they are talking about new 8g super diamonds.
