Ok so I am new to the forum. I am trying to get a set of majestic poker chips. The issue I am having is I play lots of different games and can't figure out the right denominations and ammounts to buy. I regularly play .25/.50 1/1 1/2 and occasionally 2/5 nl hold em cash games. I try to pick chips but I seem to be picking blind. How do I figure out the right denominations and number of chips to accommodate all these cash games?

How big does the 2/5 game play? Suggested breakdown below will get you a total bank of $10 225. Might be too small?
Denoms: 0.25/1/5/25/100
#: 100/200/400/160/40

Feel like this should almost be a sticky, it's a standard request from all new members (Self included).

Depends on the number of players, but I run .50 / $1 game that often plays like a $2 / $5. Here's what I use....works great for 2 tables (14 to 16 players)

.50 x 100
$1 x 300
$5 x 200
$25 x 100 (usually only get 2 to 3 barrels in play)
$100 x 20

If you wanted to add on to be safe, I would add 100 more $5s for 300 total.

Yes, I'm a 300/300 fan as well. For me:

.25 x 200
$1 x 300
$5 x 300
$25 x 100
$100 x 100

... covers every game I'd want to spread, except limit games.

That's a pretty wide range. Here's how I would design at 600 chip single table set for each of these games.

0.25-0.50: 100/300/160/40 of (0.25/1/5/25)
1-1: 200/300/80/20 of (1/5/25/100)
1-2: 100/400/80/20 of (1/5/25/100)
2-5: 100/100/300/100 of (1/5/25/100)

So combined I get 1200 chips
100*0.25
300*1
400*5
300*25
100*100

Yes, I'm a 300/300 fan as well. For me:

.25 x 200
$1 x 300
$5 x 300
$25 x 100
$100 x 100

I'm team 400/400 myself, but 300/300 is fine if you want to stretch the set. But for 2-5, I think more than 100 twenty-fives are in order. I really think another rack should be in there (by dropping a rack of 0.25), or at least swap 60 hundos out for twenty-fives so everyone can at least have a barrel of the workhorse chip, on average.

Another idea is to swap the 0.25 frac for a 0.50 frac, and making your minimum game 0.50-0.50, you can reduce the number of chips needed in fracs that way a great deal. 50-60 would be enough for a single table of either 0.50-0.50 or 0.50-1.

I play NL50 NL100 NL200 with my cash set and I have never been out of chips.

100x 0.5
300x 1
400x 5
100x 25
40x 100

Thanks for all the replys and help I think I will start with the 1200 chips and go from there. I am just getting into this world of chips but I feel majestics may just be my jumping off point.

Not really parting with any chips so sorry this is just a teaser. We usually only play 1/2 but at the time was thinking the way you did and got .25 labels for the orange. The blues are relabled as Alt 1s for a change of pace now and then.

My 2cents (assuming just one table of 10 players max, but having to take into account the huge stakes range):

100x Non-Denominated fractionals
200x $1s
400x $5s
200x $20s or $25s
100x $100s

1,000 chips, but if you really also play $2/5, you should afford that quantity, even of the highest quality, as another member here has correctly stated.
If your $2/5 thing is deep and is your real thing, this would be a totally different issue.

I like having more chips on the table. You don't want too little so then people feel they need to go all in so much.
So lets say a 10 handed .25/.50 game assuming everyone buying in for $100
I would give each person 40 - .25's, 40 - $1's, 10 - $5's. Everyone starts with 90 chips and the table looks full of chips. Then just use $5's/$25's for rebuys
For that you would need 400 - .25's, and $400 - $1's

For the $2/$5 game I'm thinking everyone buys in for around $500? So you give 25 - $1's, 60 - $5's, 7 - $25's. Everyone starts with 92 chips. Then use $25's and $100's for rebuys.

So i would go with the below breakdown which is 1650 chips.
400 - 0.25's
400 - $1's
600 - $5's
150 - $25's
100- $100's

A 2/5 table is going to use 25's as the workhorse - starting stacks should be more like
10 -1's
8 -5's
18 -25's
The singles and fives really only pay blinds here - overloading a table with them just makes life suck when you count down an all-in bet.

In turn, my .25/.50 table starts out with $50 buyin
20 - .25
40 - 1's
1 - 5's
On my .25/.50 table the singles are the workhorse. If your game likes buying in at 100 for a .25/.50 game, add 10 more 5's to that stack, since games buying in at 200BB often play bigger than the blinds would indicate and the extra 5's would be happily used.

On a cash table, any more than 20 blind chips is just a waste. Before you know it the table space a player has available to them is consumed with chips leaving the player no room to function (especially if your cup holders are in the rail). Players will complain if all their real estate is consumed with chips and yet their stack has no realistic value to it compared to the game being played.

I would agree these total chip numbers are more functional for game play. Over 90 chips per player at a 10-handed table may ‘seem’ fun, but i think would just get annoying about an hour in.

$50 and up starting stack for .25/.50 is as easy as:

Barrel of quarters
Barrel of $1’s
Fill in the rest with $5’s

I disagree. A $2/$5 game you’re making it hard to actually play poker w that few chips in play.

Again. You can always use $25’s for rebuys so there wouldn’t be crazy amounts of chips in play even after an hour or two. Maybe two barrels of .25’s can be reduced to 1 barrel but I was thinking more of a home game with friends and not a casino game. But if your goal is to take ur friends mortgage payment by all means go for it. I like to not feel bad after winning money at a home game.
Also I’ve never seen a $2/$5 game in my 20 years of playing that used the $25 as a workhorse chip that’s just crazy. Your going to give 8 $5’s chips in a $2/$5 game??? Seems extremely unreasonable to me.

Been in a card room? The 2/5 table at Seneca Niagara will put SERIOUS abuse on a 25 chip!

I've played in $2/$5 games across the country and in 90% of them $5 are the workhorse preflop, but post flop $25 and in a rare few $100 are standard. Using a bunch of $5s is a waste of time which is important as most $2/5s qualify for time rake.

After writing that last night (with a few beers in me) the poker gods came to me in a dream that someone kept splashing the pot with all those chips in play. One barrel of quarters will do, I still like the $1 or the $5 as workhorse in a friendly home game and not the $25.
