Hello everyone,

I am glad to be here and learn as much as I can from you guys.

I have recently been getting obsessed with poker chips reading as many threads as I can and watching hobbyphilic's youtube videos. I have a couple interests when it comes to poker chips. My first interest is upgrading my cheap dice set into something in the medium range. I am looking for something good in the $100-200 range to host 9 player cash games. I was doing some research and I really like the Desert Heat design so I would like your opinion on that. I was also looking at the Milano chips as a second favorite.

My second interest in poker chips are through collecting individual designs that I like. I would be interested in talking to a collector and learning more about this because for now I just scroll through eBay looking at designs i like and adding them to an Excel wishlist i made. For example, one of my favorite designs is the Dolphin Cruise line $100 denomination. Another one that I am interested in is the Caesar's Palace on the Seas $5 chip denomination, but I do not see any listed anywhere.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say and thanks for your time!

The Desert ahead chips are in the plastic chip metal slug category. The Milano chips are “China clay” chips and are essentially the next tier up from there. I would recommend those or other China clays over the slug chips. If you keep an eye out you might be able to find a used ceramic chip set to pop up for $200.

Shame because the desert heat was one of the cooler designs but i definitely want that upgrade. Milanos are back in the lead! So what makes ceramics better than China clays?

Welcome @T206

That 100 dolphin cruiseline is an attractive chip

classic base color, scalloped inlay, subtle logo, lovely bright multi-colored edgespots

lot to like there

GL finding that chip set!

Hello and welcome!

$200 won't get you too far. At 500 chips for a 9-handed cash game that's about 0.40 per chip. You might be able to pare it down to 400 chips in a really tight breakdown, and that gets you to 0.50 a chip. New China Clays and perhaps some ceramics are a possibility, maybe a slim chance at a vintage ASM solid set on eBay.

Define your stakes. And get samples. You might just want to hold off, save a little more money, and get something substantially better. At $350+ you're starting to get into some really nice stuff....

Got a lot of T206 cards? Your price range might get you a nice set of chips from the same era

Welcome to the forum! Your pictures chips appear to be old school Paulsons - something great to add to any collection and something that will hold its value for a lifetime! There are definitely some “collectors” here and people who can help you get the right chips for your home game. I was like you when I started and picked up a used Majestic tournament set... I have since jumped in further collecting old leaded Paulson cash game sets and some new Paulsons too... enjoy the journey!

Thank you very much! Is a set considered one of each denomination? I really only have interest in a couple denominations but if it is normal to collect the whole set, Id do that as well.

Does it make sense to just stick with the cheap plastic dice chip and skip the milano phase and just jump into the $350+ category? In the meantime, I can just collect the individual chips that I like :)

Shocked someone recognized my name. PM me if you are interested in buying, selling or trading any vintage cards haha! Always looking for more T206s.

How can you tell that it is a Paulson chip by just looking at it? This is why I joined this forum. There is so much cool stuff to learn!
Hello and welcome
Thank you :)

I am familiar with many forums, however I am confused on the difference between a post and a message so if someone can enlighten me I would appreciate it

Welcome!
You've come to the right place and am glad to see you've taken the time to read up! Start with samples, whether you purchase or jump on the travel sample loaners, this gives you an opportunity to feel/hear what you might like from the many choices that will be available within your budget! Be sure to do some reading on chip set breakdowns before purchasing, this will help maximize your chip count for your cost.

Also - the dolphin is a hot chip!

Welcome! It looks to me like you've already aquired quite a taste for good chips. I recommend buying the best chip you can, even if you cant get as many as you need right away...and adding on as you go. That will help prevent the buying/flipping that many early chippers (including me) went through.
I started in 2005 with dice chips, thinking they were good enough. I quickly moved to a better looking, but still slugged chip. It wasnt long before I had enough and bought the Paulson classic chips. I wish I had avoided the first 2 sets, but I guess it was just part of becoming "aware" of my interest in chips.

In my opinion, yes. If your goal is to get better chips in the long run, then don't waste your time in large sets of the low end stuff, because you won't get that money back.

Samples are your friend.

If you can find someone from the forum who has some nice chips (maybe some ceramics and clays), It would be good to meet up with them and see and feel the difference of a quality set... it might save you from buying something you soon regret...

Do a search on Paulson chip molds and you will begging to learn about the different chips and begin to recognize the difference between molds...

Sorry, I forgot to mention, there are (free) sample sets of various chips, include Paulson and other high end ones, available to evaluate. Just find the thread at the top of the forum Poker Chip General and sign up.

Okay looks like I will be saving up then. Is 500ct sets the normal for 9 player cash games?

Also, are samples owned by you when you purchase them or are you expected to ship them back?

Another question I have is ceramics the top of the line or is it paulsons?

500 chips isn’t much for a cash game but that depends on how your game plays.

Lots of people here are fine with a 600 chip set for that many players. Even that is small for our games and stakes

Welcome to the forum.

Some here like to collect individual chips and chip sets. Others are into gathering up playable chip sets (that's me). I enjoy playing poker and having nice chips to play with.

600 chips can be enough for a single table game depending on how wild the game is and how high the stakes can be. My group likes having more 5s on the table so I play with about 800+ chips. Paulson chips are distinctive due to their markings of the top hat and cane used on most of their chips but there's also other molds. They are a favorite among many here. Sample sets can sometimes be complete sample sets or partial. If you're only interested in certain denominations you can even pick up single chips here and there. Check out the classified section for some ideas and names, then use the search bar to look through threads of what's for sale or recently cold using the prefix filter.

Ask away if you have any more questions.

Hello, welcome to the forum. You have got to love the people here. You are getting nothing but really great advice. Good luck in your search for chips!
