For the last week or so I've been watching different poker chip videos and just about ever one mentioned this site, so I decided to 'bite the bullet' and try making an account to try and learn more, specifically about how to host for smaller games. but i cant wait to be able to start talking and learning more from people much more experienced then me.

Welcome! Glad to have you join us! Ask any questions you may have and feel free to send a PM!!

Welcome! What part of the Midwest, specifically?
I live in the land on 10,000 lakes, which is Minnesota nice for 11,842. and if you wanted to be more specific, I think its safe to say I'm part of the 90% of the sates population the lives in or near the twin city's.

and no, I don't have a Minnesota accent, that only a rural Minnesota thing, just about the only thing I'll say is "warshing" instead of "washing"
blame my mother

The first thing to learn from us "experienced" (yeah right :p ) people ..............................
1. Buy a hot dog roller
2. Get samples of everything
3. Really, Buy a hot dog roller! :D

Well, asking my first question didn’t take long at all. What exactly is a hotdog roller? Is it some poker thing or are you trying to tell me to get the thing that’s on just about every gas station?

And to answer your next question - yes I am a fat guy and yes I like food

Yeah, that was something I had figured. But I think for now I’m interested in getting a budget chip set. And maybe later I’ll see if I want anything more Substantial

If you fill us in on how "budget" we can offer recommendations

Well, I think for the time being I’d never have more then 5 players, maybe 6 once in a blue moon. So I guess a set of 300 ish, maybe 200 depending on price. And I wouldn’t want to spend to much more then a $100-$150

As for stakes, that’s a little bit different then I think most people here are used to. The players and I are all about of a dnd group. And we were thinking that it might be a fun thing to do is that at the end of a session we could use some of our gold to play poker, because sometimes you just need a little more gold the buy that one item you need
Not sure if I’d want to do tournament or “cash” games for that. But I think that’s more something I should ask the others on their opinions

It may be the upper end of your budget, but check out chips from @SUN-FLY Poker Chips at https://www.apollonchips.com/. With you needing such few chips there is no reason to limit yourself to the metal slugged junk they sell on Amazon.

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah sounds like you could do a cash or tourney, with the buyin and payout being “in-game” gold. Just depends on your preference - I can see pros and cons to each- mostly depending on time allotment for poker.

How much gold does each player usually have? How much gold do you think people are willing to wager? Such as 10% of their gold or 100% of their gold?

Depending on the amount, I could see a quick turbo tourney or a 2/5 or 5/10+ Cash-style game could make sense.

Minnesota, that makes you practically a fellow Swede, right? Oh and welcome!

Another option to consider - there are people here who use poker chips for other games (like D&D) to track in-game currency and expendable items. You could do that, and play poker at the end of the night with that day's leftovers. People who win can start the next D&D game with their winnings

200-300 chips for $100-$150 is tight, but there are options.

I think you need to decide game (cash or tournament) and stakes before we can give you any real suggestions. But I think a 6-person cash or tournament with 300 chips is possible. Breakdown will depend on game and stakes.

EDIT: If you are thinking a tournament might be a realistic possibility, you'd be foolish not to bid $150 on @AK Chip's charity auction. It's 600+ real clay chips, and will certainly handle 5-6 players. And shipping is included!

EDIT2: Too late. Looks like the bid is $200 already.

Yeah, by the time I had seen the post it had already passed $200, and I think had even gone to $325. But it’s for a good cause so I’m ok with missing out.
Yeah I’m starting to realize my max budget might need to end up getting raised. So I think for now I’ll say that I think I’ll only need a 300 piece set. And with this being my first set I don’t think I’d want to spend much more the $.50 a chip. But, sigh I guess I can have my mace pet chip being $1.00

Alright, well not tipical, we did get quite a large pay out form a hard quest and a level up, each of us getting 12,500 goild once it was split 4 ways. And I think perhaps a relatively low stakes game now that we’re are at a desk try high level would be 2,000 gold, that being the cost of just a +1 enchanted weapon when I think atleast some of the party has level 3 weapons or more. But yeah, before or after buying items for the end of session it would be nice to have a short ish poker game to maybe spread around that gold we don’t really have any plans for at the moment. And sometimes you gust need a few extra 100 gold to get that one item you need and this could be a more fun way to do that rather then being like one player I’d now indebted to another
