We were chatting last night, and thought it might be cool to come up with a Bad Beat Jackpot.

Has anyone managed to pull this off?

Initial thoughts were we could go Queens Full or Better, to qualify; both hole cards to play. "Loser" would take 50% and the rest chopped at the table the night of occurrence.

But was a little worried it could carry on forever, given the relatively small amount of hands played, so were trying (Unsuccesfully) to get a tie in for more of a 50/50 Bad Beat and High Hand, so that something would pay out more often.

Thoughts?

Casino-style BBJ seems like it's unfeasible in a home game, since there's no rake/charge to accumulate the prize pool from. Something like a 72o challenge is more doable if you're looking to dump some money on the table.

We would just collect a flat $1 or $2 at the beginning of the night, nothing huge by an means.

Do pull out the 72 Challenge once in awhile too, always a nice wrinkle.

I have played in a game that had a BBJ, it was any full house losing with both players using both hole cards, no pocket pair required. $3 per hand was raked to pay for it. Occasionally it would get hit twice in one night and other times it went 6 weeks without getting hit.

When it got big nobody wanted to miss a game since they all paid into it for a long time. And if someone that didn’t play often did win it most people would not be happy about it.

when I took over the game I changed it to a high hand that gets paid out at midnight. It is better to not to have to hold a bunch of money from game to game.

what happens if it gets big and you can’t host because of Covid or whatever reason?

when the game I played in broke there was about $1600 in the BBJ. The host divided it up evenly among the 8 players that played the most games since it was last hit. There were a few people pissed they were left out.

Uh. We always have one going. We take five bucks a game and toss it into a pot. If it's cash, we take the lowest denom on the table per hand.

I would also suggest not doing a bad beat jackpot at a home game just because of the possible issues of the host needing to hold the money over multiple games and possible unforeseen circumstances. However, if you really want to do it and are worried about it not hitting often, you can always lower the required hand every game. For example, first game it's Aces full, next game it's Kings full, etc.

I'd suggest just doing a high hand for the night instead, or even bomb pots every hour or something along those lines, but that's just my personal preference.

Easy to set up a BBJ in a home game. Hardest part is figuring out the funding.
Also, it must be awarded during that game. If you carry over to the next game then you are taking a rake

I've had a bad beat Jackpot in my weekly game for about fifteen years now. Aces full of tens beat by anything, both players have to play both their hole cards. It's divided 50% to the loser, 30% to the winner, and 20% to the rest of the table. We get money into it by charging $1 to rabbit hunt, or sometimes players will be like, if I fold, I'll put $3 in the Jackpot if you show your hand. When players tip after a hand, they will be like "x" to the dealer and "x" to the Jackpot. Players try to tip me at the end of the night and I tell them to just put it in the Jackpot. The reason I do it like this is so their is no confusion, there is no rake! The biggest Jackpot we ever had before the current one was under $700. The current Jackpot is over $5000. The game is almost always full now.

First part does sound easy haha. Flat BBJ sounds doable for sure, but taking money off the table could be a problem which is why I thought casino-style was unfeasible. Granted, it's being taken off with the idea of being put back on, but still.

Were not running a casino or taking a rake. Helps its the same 10-12 friends every week. We did have it hit once when one guy took his first week off in two years. His head popped when we text him the bad beat.
